A PROCLAMATION
DESTROYER ESCORT DAY
Millions of young Americans, including thousands of Georgians, were called upon to serve their country during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and other conflicts to join the fight by land, sea, and air to restore and maintain internationa l peace; and
Destroyer escorts were originally designed, bui lt, and manned to combat the growing threat from Ax is submarines in World War II , which was a dangerous threat to Allied supply lines transportin g troops and material; and
The versatility of destroyer escorts was qu ickly recognized, and their missions in World War II were expanded to include search and rescue, fleet anti-air protection, conversion to high speed transports, and employment in hunter/ killer groups; and
Destroyer escort vessels and their crews successfully carried ou t vital missions in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, including enemy supp ly i nterdiction at sea, naval gunfire support, search and rescue , communications, and meteorology; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2013 , as DESTROYER ESCORT DAY in Georgia in commemoration of the valiant sailors who r isked and often sacrificed the ir lives i n service to our country.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 25th day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen.
