A PROCLAMATION

VITILIGO MONTH

WHEREAS:

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder of unknown causes that is characterized by white patches of skin with a loss of pigment cells from the involved areas; and .

WHEREAS:

Several diseases have been associated with vitiligo, including Addison ' s disease, pern icious anemia, hyperthyroidism, and lupus. No known cure exists for vitiligo; and

WHEREAS:

Many Georgians suffer every day from the emotional effects of vitiligo, as well as having to deal with health complications including the vulnerability of discolored skin to certain forms of skin cancer; and

WHEREAS:

Increased awareness of this disorder will enhance the chances of research geared towards development of better therapies and preventative measures for those afflicted; now

THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim june 201 3, as VITILIGO MONTH in Georg ia.
