A proclamation: Confederate History Month, Dec. 20, 2013

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS:
WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS:

CONFEDERATE HISTORY MONTH
April 2014 marks the fourth year of the Sesquicentennial of the creation of the Confederate Government and the start of the War Between the States. Confederate Memorial Day on April 26 is a time when Georgians honor the more than 90,000 brave men and women who served the Confederate States of America. Georgia joined the Confederacy in January 1861 when a convention ratified the ordinance of secession, and Georgia has long cherished her Confederate history and the great leaders who made sacrifices on her behalf; and
The Union Army, under the command of General William T. Sherman, put the new concept of Total Warfare into practice during his Atlanta Campaign and March to the Sea with the intention of making "old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war."; and
Among those affected were the women and children of the mills in Roswell and New Manchester who were arrested and charged with treason. They were sent north of the Ohio River where many died from starvation or exposure, with the majority of their fate being unknown and few returning to Georgia; and
A number of diaries were kept by Georgia women and children during this time, giving an eyewitness account of their experiences with Sherman's Army. The diaries of Eliza Frances Andrew's War-Time journal of a Georgia Girl, 7864-7865, Dolly Sumner Lunt's A Woman's Wartime journal, Mary Ann Harris Gay's Life in Dixie During the War, and the diary of ten year old Carrie Berry have provided historical value to scholars of the War Between the States for over a hundred years; and

WHEREAS:

These stories from Georgia women of hope, hardships, and tenacity, along with their devotion to Georgia and their cause in the face of destruction, continues to elicit courage in others to this day; and

WHEREAS:

It is important that Georgians reflect upon our state's past and honor and respect the devotion of her Confederate leaders , soldiers, and citizens; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 2014 as CONFEDERATE HISTORY MONTH and April 26, 2014, as CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 20th day of December in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen.
