A PROCLAMATION PREECLAMPSIA AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: THEREFORE:
Preeclampsia, including HELLP syndrome, and eclampsia, are dangerous conditions of pregnancy that can lead to maternal and/or infant mortality or premature birth with significant health risks for the mother and baby; and
As many as 320,000 cases of preeclampsia are diagnosed in America every year, with approximately 25 percent resulting in severe, life-threatening consequences to a pregnant woman and her baby; and
Public education on the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and eclampsia can help women recognize the condition and seek appropriate medical care; and
Prenatal education should include recognition of those signs and symptoms such as spikes in maternal blood pressure, sudden swelling of face and hands, severe upper abdominal pain, blurred vision, persistent headaches, and breathlessness; and
Many citizens of Georgia have joined with the Preeclampsia Foundation to raise public awareness in order to minimize maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 2014 as PREECLAMPSIA AWARENESS MONTH in the State of Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 18th day of December in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen.
