A PROCLAMATION
ORAL, HEAD, AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS WEEK
WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS : WHEREAS : TH EREFORE:
Over 50,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with cancer of the head and neck, and less than 60 percent of all head and neck cancer patients live over five years following their diagnosis; and
Over 85 percent of all oral, head, and neck cancers can be prevented, but on ly a smal l percentage of the population understands the d isease, treatments, and prevention strategies ; and
A significant number of i ndividuals treated for this disease encounter disability due to breathing, swall owing, speakin g, and other disabilities; an d
Increased awareness of this disease could result in earlier diagnos is, lower functional d isability, and higher survival rate s; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim the week of April 14-20, 20 13, as ORAL, HEAD, AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS WEEK w ith August 8, 2013 , as ORAL, HEAD, AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS DAY.
