A PROCLAMATION
LAW DAY
Law Day is an opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the vita l role of our legal institutions, including our adversarial legal system , citizen juries, and independent courts; and
In 1958, Pre.sident Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day as "a day of national dedication to the princ iples of government under law." Every president since has taken the occasion of Law Day as an annual opportunity to proclaim our nation 's ongo ing commitment to the democratic ru le of law; and
The American justice system is charged with upholding and protecting the rights as we ll as the freedom and justice of all Americans. The 2012 Law Day theme, " No Courts, No justice, No Freedom," provides an opportunity to highlight the crucial role of our courts and to foster a better understanding of the judiciary; and
All Americans and Georgians alike should reflect on the legal legacy of the U.S. Constitution and the enduring meaning of "a government of laws , not men. " By appreciating our legal rights and valuing our civic responsibil ities , Americans can work together to sustain our nationa l commitment to a democratic society under law; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2012, as LAW DAY in Georgia.
