BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
LYNCH SYNDROME CANCERS AWARENESS DAY
WHEREAS:
Lynch syndrome affects over 600,000 people in the United States. Less than five percent of these individuals are currently diagnosed; and
WHEREAS:
Lynch syndrome is a hereditary pred isposition presenting a high lifet ime rtsk of contract ing a litany of cancers, i ncluding up to an 85 percent lifetime risk of co lon cancer, 65 percent lifetime risk of endometrial cancer and higher than average risks of contracting ovarian cancer, gastric tract cancers, hepatobiliary cancers, renal pelvic cancers, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, brain cancer and other cancers- often at an early age; and
WHEREAS :
Genetic testing and documentation can help doctors treat and diagnose Lynch syndrome;
WHEREAS:
Increased public awareness about Lynch Syndrome and more resources to secure genetic testing for this disease will help lower the risks and number of deaths associated with cancer; and
WHEREAS:
Lynch Syndrome International is a non-profit organization committed to raisi ng awareness of th is cond it ion and advocating fo r genetic testing to help lower the destructions of this disease; now
THEREFORE:
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim March 22, 2012, as LYNCH SYNDROME CANCERS AWARENESS DAY in Georg ia.
