A PROCLAMATION
CUSHING'S SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY
WHEREAS:
Cushing 's syndrome is caused by the excess production of the steroid hormone cortisol. These relatively rare disorders can be physically and emotionally devastating to the patient; and
WHEREAS:
Most patients endure years of symptoms prior to obtaining a diagnosis, and recovery often requires a substantial period of time. Cushing's syndrome may cause weight gain , skin changes and fatigue, and it can lead to such serious conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and osteoporosis. If untreated, Cushing 's syndrome can cause death; and
WHEREAS:
Cushing 's is a medical disorder where patients can benefit from expert medical care and information. It is also vital to put patients in contact with other patients and to facilitate the sharing of information between those sufferi ng from Cushing ' s. Many i ndividuals and organ izat ions across the country strive to assist in th is process and increase public awareness for this serious disease; and
WHEREAS:
A collective effort from patients, experts and fam i lies is crit ical to help in crease awareness and educate the public about Cu~h i ng 's syndrome. These stakeholders are the centra l resource for information and support, helping to raise and distribute funds and spread the message about Cu~hing 's syndrome research; now
THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the state of Georg ia, do hereby proclaim April 7, 2012, as CUSHING'S SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY in Georgia.
