Every two hours , a girl is born with Rett syndrome. This disorder not on ly affects families i n Georgia, but also around the nation and worldwide; and
Rett syndrome is a devastating neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a sporadic, genetic mutation of the MECP2 gene on the X chromosome. It mainly affects females, and symptoms usually do not appear until six to 18 months after birth. Girls are generally born healthy before they begi n to show signs of regression , or stagnation of m ilestones t hat wou ld otherwi se be routinely accomplished; and
Those diagnosed w ith Rett syndrome lose the i r ability to speak, wa lk, lose hand control, and suffer from seizures and scol iosis. The most severe hand icap is apraxia, where t here is an i nability to carry out learned purposefu l movement due to the mutated gene; and
In 2007, a reversa l of Rett syndrome was discovered in mice suffering symptoms. Scientists and researchers across the globe are working to find su itable treatments to help with certa in symptoms, as we ll as discover a cure for Rett syndrome; and
October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month, and a time to raise aware ness in the medical community and the general public about th is disorder that impacts so many l ives here in Georgia and around the globe; now
