A proclamation: Caribbean American Heritage Month, Apr. 29, 2011

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

WHEREAS :

Emigration f rom the Caribbean region to the American Colonies began as early as 16 19, and since that time, millions of people have come from the Caribbean to the United States; and

WHEREAS :

Peopl e of Caribbean descent reside in every part of the United States and have influenced American culture, society and government; and

WHEREAS :

The State of Georgia is one of the most culturally- enriched and diverse states in th e Southeastern United States and is the home of many Caribbean Americans; and

WHEREAS :

Th ere have been many famous and influential Caribbean Americans in the history of the Un ited States, and Caribbean Americans have contributed greatly to education , fine arts , business, sports, science and many other areas, positively affecting the lives of all citizens in this state; and

WHEREAS :

Caribbean Americans have played an active role in the civil rights movement and the labor movement, and they continue to make important contributi ons to social and pol itical issues facing Georgia and our nation; now

THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim June 2011 as CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH in Georgia.
