A PROCLAMATION
COOPERATIVE MONTH
Cooperatives are businesses that are owned and operated by their members. These businesses not only serve the interests of the members, but they also dedicate substantial human and financial resources to serve the ir communities beyond their core business functions; and
More than 29,000 cooperatives nationwide operate in virtually every industry including agriculture, child care, energy, financial services, food retail and distribution, housing, healthcare, insurance, telecommunications and many others; and
Concern for comm unity is a core guiding cooperat ive principle. The community commitment of cooperatives enhances economic opportunity and improves quality of life in Georgia's cities and towns. This includes charitable giving that meets the needs of underserved popu lations; investment in commun ity development that generates jobs and income and helps create vital services; contributions and involvement in environmental protection activities; innovative projects that improve chi ld health and welfare ; and support quality education; and
The community comm itment of cooperatives enhances econom ic opportunity and improves quality of life in Georgia 's cities and towns; and
During the month of October, cooperatives of all types and from all industries reaffirm the ir member-service mission and their comm itment to commun ity and pledge conti nued active involvement in t he communities in which their members live and work; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim October 20 11, as COOPERATIVE MONTH in Georgia.
