A PROCLAMATION
CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING AWARENESS WEEK

Childhood lead poisoning is a serious and preventable disease that can cause permanent effects including learning disabilities, ADD /ADHA, mental retardation, behavioral issues, speech and language delays and hearing loss; and
The major source of childhood lead poisoning is lead dust in homes built prior to 1978 that are prone to deteriorating lead paint and contaminated soil; and
Childhood Lead Poisoning Awareness week recogn izes the importance of eliminating childhood lead poison ing in our community and to encourage parents, healthcare professionals and community members to work together to find creative and safe solutions to end the poisoning of children by lead-based pai nt; and
During this week, U.S. EPA Region IV and Georgia AT&T Pioneers are collaborating through various activities such as reading and giving books to children ages six and under in order to increase their understanding of childhood lead poisoning prevention; and
The health, well-being, and future of our children are joint responsibilities between parents, health officials and the community.
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim October 23 -October 30 , 2011, as CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING AWARENESS WEEK in Georg ia and encourage our citizens to educate themselves about lead poisoning concern, methods of prevention, and to participate in the week's activitie s.
