A PROCLAMATION
LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL DAY

The citizens of the state of Georgia stand firmly committed to quality after school programs and opportunities because they provide safe, challenging, engaging and enjoyable learning experiences to help children and youth develop their social, emotional, physical, cultural and intellectual skills; and
The commitment to after school programs and the opportunities they provide ultimately support working families by ensuring that children are safe and productive after the reg ula r school day end s; and
After school programs help build stronger communities by involving our students , parents, business leaders and adult vol unteers in the lives of our young people, thereby promoting positive relationships among children, youth, families and adults; and
After school programs in Georgia have provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education and well-being of our youth. Quality after school programs are key to helping our children become successful adults; and
Lights On Afterschoo/, a national celebration of after school programs on October 20, promotes the importance of quality after school programs in the lives of children, their families and their communities ; and
The State of Georgia is committed to investing in the health and safety of all young people by providing expanded learning opportunities that will help close the achievement gap and prepare young people to compete in the global economy; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim October 20, 201 1, as LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL DAY in Georgia.
