GEORGIA HUNTING REGULATIONS Seasons and Bag Limits

PURPOSE Georgia's hunting regulations, seasons, and bag limits are set by the members of the State Game and Fish Commission , .-r actin g on the recommendations of the Comm ission's trained game management specialists and experienced field personnel. License fees and general laws are determined by the Georgia General Assembly.

wording of the game laws and regul ations, see the Georgia Code a nd the current copy of the State Game and Fish Commission regulations on file at all county courthouses.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS To pay for Georgia's wildlife conservat ion efforts, all hunters 16 years of age or over are required to have a valid hunting license with them while hunting. Residents who are 65 years of age or over may obtain an honorary license free of charge. Non-residents must have the appropriate nonresident license as shown below.

Resident Georgia hunting licenses are avai lab le in all parts
of the State from a lmost 2,000 li cense dealers in most hard-
ware stores, sporting goods stores, bait dealers. etc .
Resident archery licenses, trappi ng li censes, and non-
resident li censes a re ava il able at some li cense dealers or
from the State Game and Fish Com mi ssio n, License Divi-
sion, 401 State Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Orders by
mail should include the complete description and address
of the applica nt, with the proper payment. All licenses pur-
chased during the 1965-19E6 season expire on March 31 ,
1966.
Application forms for the honorary over-65 years of age
hunting license may be secured from the Comm ission's office
in Atlanta or from any district office.
Non-residents are not required to have a hunting license
wh ile competing in registered field tri als.
GENERAL REGULATIONS
Hunting Hours Hunt in g hours for all non-migratory game birds and anima ls begin a t 30 minutes before local sunr ise until 30 minutes a fter sund ow n. Migratory game hun ti ng hours for ducks and geese, except doves, rem ai n from sunrise to sunset. Dove shooti ng hours a re from noon to sunset. Night hunting is permitted for raccoon , opossum, and fox.

Open ing , Closing Dates All opening dates for no n-mi gratory game begi n 30 mi nutes before sunrise on the opening date and closing dates end 30 mi nutes after su ndown on the closi ng dates. Illegal Hunting Methods Hun ters are not allowed to hunt on foot fro m a public hi ghway. or to hunt from an automob ile, airpl ane, or power boat. It is ill egal to destroy the dens and homes of wi ld li fe. or to set fire to grass, trees, or ma rsh lands for the pu rpose of driving out game. D ee r may not be taken in a stream or lake. Hunter~ may not use a li ght at ni gh t to locate ga me, nor may th ey use pits, cages (ex cept in lega l trappin g), d rugs, po iso ns, chemica ls, smo ke, gas, explos ives, fisc hew, wease ls. guin ea pi gs, o r rodents of any kind, arti ficia l li ght , or mec hani ca l dev ice other tha n a fi rea rm or bow and a rrow as spell ed out in th e hun ting regu lations.

DEER HUNTING REGULATIONS
Deer Rifles and !".hotguns
Rifles all owed for deer hunting in all parts of Georgia includ e any rifle usin g a center fire ca rtrid ge (as opposed to rimfire) with an expanding soft point or hollow point bullet that is .22 ca libe r or la rger, wi th the exception of the following low-ve loc ity calibers which meet thi s desc ription but which m ay not be used for deer huntin g: .2 18 Bee; .22 Hornet; .22 J et; .22 1 Fireball ; .25-.20; .256 H aw keye; .32-.20 a nd th e .30 Ca liber M- I Army Carbine. Th e .30 Ca liber M- I Arm y Rifle is lega l fo r dee r hunting, but may not be used 1-1- ith ha rd p o int mili tary a mmunit ion . Muzzle loading weapons are lega l for deer huntin g. Pisto ls a re not lega l deer hunting wea pons.
Shotguns lega l for deer hunting in add iti o n to rifles include 20-gauge shotguns or la rger, loaded with slugs or buckshot. Th ere is no rest riction on the size of the buckshot pellets. (Buckshot is not allowed on ma nagement a rea deer hunts because of the high crippling loss.)
"Antlerless" Deer
While it is the intention of the State G a me a nd Fish Commission to control ra pidly expanding deer populations in some areas with increased hunting of both sexes, it is a violation of the law to kill a doe deer (or a deer without clearly visible a ntlers which h ave not broken the sk in) in a ny a rea or by any method not permitted by Co mmi ssion regulations.
Evidence for the purpose of determining the sex of the

deer (head or reprodu cti ve orga ns) mu st be present with the deer at all times whil e in possess ion of th e hunter unt il it is processed for co nsumpti on.
It is a vio lation of the law for a nyo ne to possess th e meat of an a ntl erl ess deer taken in viol a tion of Commission regulations, o r to knowin gly concea l th e ill ega l killing of an a ntle rl ess deer by any person by accident or otherwise.
Deer Tags Hunters must tag a ll deer killed with the tags provided for th at purpose on th eir hunting license within 10 minutes after bagging th e anim a l. Th e tag must remain on th e deer at all times, until it is processed for consumption . Cold storage pl ants, processing pl ants, o r common-carriers m ay not accept deer for storage, processi ng, shipment, or any other purpose th at a re not properly tagged. All untagged deer will be co nfiscated and a case will be made aga inst th e person possessin g th e deer. Tags are not transfera bl e to another hunter, and they may not be used on anoth er deer . Kill Report Required Each deer killed must be reported in wri ting by the successful hunter to th e State Game and Fish Commission within five days after the anim al is bagged . These reports are compiled by the Com mi ssio n to provide information for setting seaso ns and bag limi ts in future years, as well as to h elp range rs detect viol ators who have not reported a deer killed illega ll y.

Georgia's w ildlife rangers are cha rged with enforcement of ~ I I of Georgia's ga me, fi sh , and boa ting laws. In th e perfo rnla nce of the ir duti es, rangers n1ay sea rch any property o utside buildin gs. posted or otherwi se, and n1ay confi scate a ny wildlife taken illegally. Rangers m ay also confiscate any vehicle, boat, a nima l, or firearm used to hunt deer a t night, a nd the Director of the Commission will sell the ~onfi sca ted iten1 s a t public auction.
Wh en makin g cases a ga in st gan1e la w violators, r a ngers will ca rry offenders to the officers of the county in whose jurisdiction the viol a tion took place. Violation of any game and fi sh law or regul a tion is a misden1ea nor. Jud ges in such . cases m ay impose a fin e of up to $1,000 or a sentence of up to one year in jail. or both . Fines a nd forfeitures of wildlife cases are used first to pay court co sts, with any rem a inder going into the county school fund s. Wildlife rangers a nd the State G ame and Fish Commission do not receive any money fron1 fines, and di sposition of wildlife cases are out o f their hands after being turned over to local court officials.
Sheriffs, deputy sheriffs. and other peace officers n1ay a lso enforce the Sta te's game laws and regul a tions.
Ignora nce o f the law is not a legal excuse in wildlife cases.
