AASL has released the new Standards for the 21st century learner. Check it out and share it with your staff. "Standards for the 21st-Century Learner" offers vision for teaching and learning to guide our profession as education leaders. The standards will both shape the library media program and serve as a tool for media specialists to use to shape the learning of students in the school.
You can download the standards and eight page brochure at: http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslproftools/learningstandards/standards.cfm

CHARACTER EDUCATION INFORMATION

These DVDs will come with MARC record information that you are free to revise and also a letter from State Superintendent Kathy Cox. The DVDs will be sent to the Media Specialist's attention. These DVDs should be cataloged and become part of the school's Library Media Center collection.
Another Character Education set is being sent from the Safe and Drug Free Schools unit. This set is ONLY for K-5 and will be sent in care of the principal. Feel free to offer to catalog it in the Media Center.

Information is the currency of democracy. Thomas Jefferson

Correction
In the October Media Matters newsletter which featured West Side Magnet School students absorbed in a book, the caption should have read "Troup County was the only school system to receive a Library Literacy Grant for the 2007-2008 school year."

NoveList: A Terrific Source for Booktalks!

Booktalking is a great way to get students excited about reading. Use the resources in this GALILEO database to help you entice your students!

Booktalking: Selling Books to Teenagers by Tom Reynolds is an article that offers many tips on successful booktalking. Go to the Search Our Database tab and click on Article and List Search. Type booktalk in the search box. Mr. Reynolds reminds us to hook the reader with the first sentence!

Dracula is dying! But before he does, he has one last duty to perform -- passing on

his mantle to a new dark lord.

for Children of the Night

He also suggests keeping a booktalking journal as you read where you can jot down possible hooks, dialogue, characters, or ideas for props.

Under the School Resources tab are booktalks for children and young adults listed in alphabetical order by author. NoveList invites you to submit other booktalks to be
included in their database (with your name!!) by emailing novelist@epnet.com.

Everlost by Neal Shusterman Nick and Allie are killed in a car crash and on their way to the light they bump into each other, knocking themselves off the path and into another sort of afterlife. They find a world inhabited by the "souls" of children who didn't make it down the tunnel. This world, which parallels that of the living, is filled with danger and the opportunity for adventure.
Shusterman presents an intriguing world for the afterlights (those who don't make it into the light) and uses this fun playground to write a rip-roaring adventure story.
