From the AASL List Service:
Have you seen the article, "Room for Readers," in the NEA Today, March 2007 issue on pages 35-37? It contains a heartening series of stories and photos about school librarians and others who are continuing to create physical libraries (as opposed to book cart libraries) and are making literacy connections to the "school community" on behalf of their students. The statistics in the article about the number of books available to children living in poverty compared with those of middle-income families prove the great need for school and public libraries. The article is another way in which the ALA's media relations manager, Larra Clark, serves members by working with journalists to promote libraries and build support.

Linking to journals and articles
by Karen Minton
Persistent links to specific journals or even specific articles can be embedded in WebQuests and other web-based teaching materials, in courseware, PowerPoint presentations, and in pathfinders. The "Capture Citation or URL" function of Find It and Journals A-Z allows you to capture an OpenURL that will link to the journal or article permanently. Why use the "Capture Citation or URL" option:
The OpenURL that is generated contains metadata about the object as well as information about your
specific institution for authentication
Unlike persistent links copied from individual databases, an OpenURL is proxied to allow access to
remote users OpenURLs are permanent since they are not attached to a specific database or vendor
Creating a link to a specific article
1. Locate the complete citation information for the specific article you wish to link to. Make sure that full text of the article is available.
2. Click on the "Journals A-Z & Citation Linker" link on the GALILEO homepage <http:// www.galileo.usg.edu>. Enter the citation information into the "Find Citation" form and click the "Find Citation" button.
Example: (a) American History; (b) The Creation of America's Interstate Highway System; (c) June 2006; (d) Volume 41; (e) Issue 2; (f) Pages 32-39, 8p; (g) Snyder, Logan Thomas.

3. An SFX menu will appear. Test to make sure that full text is actually available by clicking one of the options under the "Online" heading, for example, MasterFILE Premier.
4. If you are able to access the full-text article, go back to the SFX menu and select the link to "More Options."

5. Click on "Save persistent URL or citation." 6. Copy the very long URL and paste it into the webpage or other online tool.
Tiny URL If the OpenURL is too long to fit into the URL field in the product you are using, visit TinyURL to create a shortened URL: http://www.tiny.cc/. GALILEO hopes to create a programmatic| solution to the long OpenURL.
Creating a link to a specific journal

1. Click on the "Journals A-Z & Citation Linker" link on the GALILEO homepage <http:// www.galileo.usg.edu>. Enter the name of the journal into the "Find Journal" form and click the "Find Journal" button. Alternatively, you can browse alphabetically to find the journal title.
2. Note the "Starts with," "Contains," and "Exact" buttons. Choose "Contains" if you are not absolutely sure of the title.

2. Choose the journal title from the list of "Full Text Options." Be sure to click on the SFX logo
rather than the journal title to capture the URL. Note: To see more information about the journal titles listed, click on "Switch to Detail View."

Claudia Zurbrick, Media Specialist at Manning Oaks Elementary in Fulton County, recently told me about her project. She got the idea at last year's Children's Literature Conference in Athens. Another great reason to attend!

KIDS' BOOK CONVENTION
Manning Oaks Elementary School, a Fulton County School in Alpharetta recently held its first ever KIDS' BOOK CONVENTION. This unique event was created and organized by Media Specialist, Claudia Zurbrick.
All students and staff took part in the event, and over 250 parents were also present during the day. Students attended workshops with teachers and special guests, including Mr. David Thrash, Children's Librarian at the Alpharetta Branch of the Atlanta Fulton County Library, and Ms. Julia Prittie, representative from the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta. Special guests also included famous Georgia authors and illustrators Michael White, Pam Alexander, Diane Shore and Chris Rumble.
In addition to their workshop sessions, students visited MOE's "exhibit hall", where they were able to meet the authors and illustrators personally, and where they were given convention mementos. MOE's business partners had booths in the exhibit hall and also donated items to the students.
There was a "mini" Scholastic book fair and even a hospitality suite with food donated by our business partners. It was a very exciting and memorable day for all involved.

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, the form of every virtue at the testing point.
