Spotlight on the Georgia peach award
Lulu Dark Can See Through Walls by Bennett Madison.
Lulu is one of a kind. She wears vintage clothing and carries a loud pink and yellow Kate Spade knockoff as she attends her private school, expresses her opinions without restraint, and breezes her way into and out of sticky situations in the nightspots, restaurants, and shops she frequents. Her mother has gone off to be a C-list actress in Hollywood while her artist father has found a more compatible boyfriend.
When someone steals her purse, Lulu reluctantly slips into Nancy Drew mode (a fictional type at which she normally sniffs in disdain) to pursue the thief. Before long, she finds herself up to her strong-willed and sarcastic neck in a murder only she believes has occurred, a doppelganger who commits social suicide in public places, and mysterious threats to her health and well being. Eventually Lulu unmasks the culprit, finds a boyfriend, and, most importantly, recovers her purse. This is good escape literature for girls who like Seventeen and yet need a role model who insists on not following the crowd.
Myrna Marler, Assoc. Prof. of English, BYU, Provo, Utah
The 19th annual GaETC Conference will be held November 15-17, 2006, at the Georgia International Convention Center. For the second year, the Georgia Department of Education will join the Georgia Educational Technology Consortium as a sponsor of the conference. This collaborative effort will continue to provide Georgia educators and technology leadership with one unified technology conference.
Check out the GaETC website at: http://www.gaetc.org

Please encourage your teachers, staff and especially students to use GALILEO. If you feel you don't know enough about this wonderful, award winning resource, check out their newsletter, or take advantage of their professional development and presentations at conferences around the state. This resource is too valuable to sit idle.
Please do not post your school's GALILEO password on your website. If you think no one will know if is posted, think again. Those GALILEO people are smart!
Have you looked at the Sanborn Fire Maps on GALILEO? They are fascinating.

Check out The New Georgia Encyclopedia for a wealth of information on Georgia authors.
Ten Georgia poets and writers speak frankly and informally about what influences their writing, and the meaning of good writing. Several of the authors read from their own works.

EBSCO INTERFACES DESIGNED FOR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Kids Search portal for elementary and middle school
Kids Search, designed for K-6 users, will appeal to current users of Searchasaurus. Like Searchasaurus, Kids Search is a portal to multiple databases appropriate for this age group, including Primary Search, Middle Search Plus, EBSCO Animals, and the image collection. A search in Kids Search will also include Newspaper Source and TOPICsource, two databases that are useful for students working on current even or critical issues papers. Using the "Detailed Search" link, users can limit their search by Lexile range. Important features and functionality included with Kids Search: A graphically-rich look and feel The interface facilitates searching by topic, enabling users to easily enter keywords, or select topics or subtopics to search, from the Basic Search screen. Users don't need to choose a database to search, because all databases in the profile are searched automatically. Results can be sorted by Relevance, as well as by Date. Users can filter results by source type. Users can add search results, images, or persistent links to searches to the Folder. Saved items in the folder can be printed or e-mailed to the user's e-mail address or to a teacher's or other e-mail address. Users can build web pages using the Page Composer program located inside the Folder. Certain HTML full-text records for state and country reports will be enhanced to display associated images, maps and graphics. Kids Search is also available on the GALILEO Kids web site (http://kids.galileo.usg.edu). Also, all the databases that are included in a Kids Search search will continue to be accessible through their individual EBSCOhost interface. Student Research Center portal for upper middle and high school Like Kids Search, Student Research Center is a portal to multiple EBSCO databases. Through the Student Research Center, users can easily pre-determine which content sources (e.g., Magazines, Newspapers, Biographies, Country Reports, Film & Video) will be included with their search. They can also search their databases by topic heading, make use of an online dictionary and encyclopedia, explore the top searches of the day, and even limit their search according to appropriate Lexile reading levels.
