Our latest Georgia Read More reader, Carmen Deedy, read her wonderful book The Library Dragon to a group of students at Susan Stripling Elementary in Gwinnett County.
Georgia Read More Poster Alert
All public elementary schools should, by this time, have at least 6 Georgia Read More posters (Jimmy Carter, John Smoltz, Travis Tritt, Bill Elliott, Mary Perdue, and Kathy Cox). The posters were distributed throughout the state by mail, through RESA's, ETTC's, and DOE delivery. Judge Sears poster has been delivered to many systems, but not all. Carmen Deedy's poster will be distributed as soon as it is received. (Those elementary schools in the Pioneer RESA area will receive their posters at the December 12th meeting.) If you do not have your posters, please let me know at: jserrite@doe.k12.ga.us

The University of Georgia is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for admission into the sixth cohort of the Flexible Delivery School Library Media Program (SLM) at the University of Georgia. This program is open to anyone seeking initial school library media certification at either the M.Ed. or Ed.S. level; non-degree certification is available for qualified candidates. Students accepted into the SLM program will begin their studies in the summer or fall of 2006.
The program is designed to accommodate working professionals through a combination of online classes, evening classes, Saturday classes at the Gwinnett University Center, and summer sessions. The first application deadline is February 1, 2006, so now is the time to apply. Note that the GRE is required. After February 1 please contact slmedia@uga.edu to see if space is still available.
UGA has found that media specialists are among the best marketers for the profession. If you know a teacher (or anyone with a Bachelor's degree) whom you believe would enjoy the challenges of this exciting, service-oriented profession, please encourage them to apply to the program.
Information about the program can be found online at http://www.coe.uga.edu/epit/slm/. Application requirements and instructions can be found there as well. Please call 706-542-3810 if you have any questions or write to slmedia@uga.edu.

New resources for all grade levels in GALILEO Karen Minton
New Kids Search portal for elementary and middle school

A new portal to EBSCO magazine and reference databases now appears in GALILEO (http://www.galileo.usg.edu) menus. Kids Search, designed for K-6 users, will appeal to current users of Searchasaurus. Like Searchasaurus, Kids Search is a portal to multiple databases appropriate for this age group, including Primary Search, Middle Search Plus, EBSCO Animals, and the image collection. A search in Kids Search will also include Newspaper Source and TOPICsource, two databases that are useful for students working on current or critical issues papers.

Important features and functionality included with Kids Search: A completely new, graphically-rich look and feel
The interface facilitates searching by topic, enabling users to easily enter keywords, or select topics or subtopics to search, from the Basic Search screen. Users don't need to choose a database to search, because all databases in the profile are searched automatically. Results can be sorted by Relevance, as well as by Date.
Users can filter results by source type.
Users can add search results, images, or persistent links to searches to the Folder. Items saved in the folder can be printed or e-mailed to the user's e-mail address or to another e-mail address. Users can build web pages using the Page Composer program located inside the Folder.
Certain HTML full-text records for state and country reports will be enhanced to display associated images, maps and graphics.

The Searchasaurus interface will continue to be available in GALILEO menus and on the GALILEO Kids web site (http://kids.galileo.usg.edu). Also, all the databases that are included in a Kids Search search will continue to be accessible through their individual EBSCOhost interface.

Student Research Center portal for upper middle and high school Like Kids Search, Student Research Center is a portal to multiple EBSCO databases. Through the Student Research Center, users can easily pre-determine which content sources (e.g., Magazines, Newspapers, Biographies, Country Reports, Film & Video) will be included with their search. They can also search the databases by topic heading, make use of an online dictionary and encyclopedia, explore the top searches of the day, and even limit their search according to appropriate Lexile reading levels.
Databases searched through this portal include:
- Health Source Consumer Edition - Image Collection
- MAS Ultra School Edition - Middle Search Plus - Newspaper Source - TOPICSearch
- American Heritage Dictionary - Columbia Encyclopedia
These databases are also accessible individually through GALILEO database menus. If your school uses express links to link students directly to resources from the school or media center web site, please note that the express links to individual databases will continue to work. Feedback on these new resources is valuable. Please use the "Contact Us" link on the GALILEO web site to let GALILEO staff know what you and your students think.
Announcements about the addition of new resources, such as Kids Search, as well as system status announcements and other updates are made to the GALILEO e-mail list. To subscribe to the list, please visit http://www.usg.edu/galileo/help/library/list.phtml
