Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Sears became our 7th reader in the Georgia Read More program. Judge Sears read Julius by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Dav Pilkey. Third graders from J.W. Arnold Elementary in Clayton County arrived by school bus at the Judicial Building in downtown Atlanta on August 18th and, after the story, got to sit behind the bench in the judge's chairs.
The readings are now posted on the DOE website at: http://www.glc.k12.ga.us/pandp/media/gareadsmore.htm

NoveList Now in K-12 GALILEO Menus
Karen Minton Virtual Services Librarian, GALILEO
Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia
A feature particularly useful to media specialists in GALILEO is the Lists feature. You can create multiple topical bibliographies that can be printed or e-mailed. Use lists to promote special themed events or to help teachers provide reading lists on a particular subject. For example, for a class studying American History, you can create a list of books relating to the Lewis and Clark expedition. You can then e-mail the list to the teacher of the class or print the list out for students. NoveList K-8 allows you to keep and manage multiple lists.
Another function useful to media specialists is the Alert feature, which notifies you by e-mail when a book on a particular topic or by a particular author has been added to the database. This feature may help if you want to add books on a certain topic to your collection or if you want information on an Accelerated Reader title.
With the Accelerated Reader program, NoveList K-8 is a great tool for helping your students find books similar to gems they found while reading from the Accelerated Reader List. The student can look up the book they like, then click Find Similar Books to locate books with the same subject terms.
The GALILEO K-12 community also has access to the full NoveList database, of which NoveList K-8 is a subset. The full database includes the same features for adult titles to help adults find the next book they want to read. Both databases can be found in the Books and Book Reviews category, in the A-Z list, or can be retrieved by typing novelist in the Find a database by name box.

Question of the Month

Ten Questions to Ask about a Novel
By Richard Peck, Author
1. What would this story be like if the main character were of the opposite sex? 2. Why is this story set where it is (not what is the setting)? 3. If you were to film this story, what characters would you eliminate if you could not use them all? 4. Would you film this story in black and white or in color? 5. How is the main character different from you? 6. Why or why not would this story make a good T.V. series? 7. What is one thing in this story that has happened to you? 8. Reread the first paragraph or two of Chapter 1. What in the chapter makes you want to read on? 9. If you had to design a new cover for this book, what would it look like? 10. What does the title tell you about the book? Does it tell the truth?

Responsible Use of GALILEO Passwords
Library staff should not distribute passwords on open websites, in public newsletters or mailings, or over the telephone. An institution may provide a mechanism for online password distribution only if that mechanism requires all users to verify their affiliation with that institution before receiving the password. Each library is responsible for the distribution of passwords to verified students, faculty, staff, and patrons only. Users should not distribute their institutions' passwords to other people.

Athens Area Librarians are Getting It All Together for Information Literacy
Nadine Cohen-Baker Reference Librarian Student Learning Center University of Georgia
K-16 and public librarians in the greater Athens area are working together to promote information literacy through a new organization, CLOC: Community Librarians Outreach and Collaboration. Judging by the enthusiastic attendance and the volume of ideas generated at our first meeting, the time for librarian collaboration has come!
At our first meeting we identified four areas for future CLOC activity: 1) creation of local K16 info literacy standards and measurable learning outcomes, mapped to the Georgia Performance Standards and our shared GALILEO resources; 2) exploration of innovative methods for teaching information literacy; 3) exploration of outreach strategies to teachers and administrators to embed information literacy in the K-12 and teacher education curricula and promote the importance of the library to academic success; and 4) creation of various pilot projects, for example, projects to help `transition year' students in the 5th, 8th and 12th grades gain an early familiarity with their new library and the new research challenges they will face.
This year, CLOC is planning a series of five two-hour workshops to tackle our first goal, the creation of local K16 info literacy standards and learning outcomes. The workshops, led by local K16 librarians, will give participants a detailed understanding of information literacy skills at every grade level and how they are taught. We will also strategize on ways to integrate our new standards and outcomes into the K16 curriculum.
Working together has been an energizing experience for all of us and has renewed our enthusiasm for tackling information literacy problems. If you don't already collaborate with colleagues in your community, take our advice and start. You'll be glad you did! Contact any one of us if you have any questions or information you'd like to share. And stay tuned for more CLOC updates!
