Letters about Literature
The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target stores and in cooperation with affiliate state centers for the book (http://www.georgiacenterforthebook.org) invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter Letters About Literature, a national reading contest. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre-- fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic, explaining how that author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels, Grades 4 through 6, Grades 7 and 8, and Grades 9 through 12.

The m ore thingschange the m ore they stay the sam e!

"Too much cannot be said about the personality of the school librarian. Her work is of a cooperative nature that requires constant use of all her powers for social adjustment. She needs to understand people and to inspire their confidence in her activities. This is best accomplished by someone possessing steady nerves, an alert mind, a sympathetic and understanding nature, and who is orderly and readily adaptable. In a word, she should be an individual who both the faculty and students can respect and admire, a dominant but not a domineering personality."
(Martha Wilson, 1919-Cited by Althea Currins, in her research of school libraries in 1939)
For more details, see Teacher Librarian, October 2004, p. 13

MEDIA MATTERS
Thanks to Lisa Barnett (King's Chapel Elementary School in Houston County) for these quotes from her students about why they love the Media Center.

I love the Media Center because....
"it has great books and so many choices. I look forward to coming to the media center each week. Each time my class goes there are many fun things to do. "because I have two helping and loving librarians."
"because the librarians are nice, I also love the books you read to us, the lessons you teach us, and the treasure box."
"because of all the books you get to read and you can get information'"
"because I love Mrs. Kinnas and Mrs. Barnett and I love to read'"
"I like the books they have and the posters. I also like the teachers."
"because of the librarians, the movies, the books, and the lessons."
"because of our nice librarians'"
"because of the books about science."

Ask your students how they feel about your media center and media program. Send their comments for publication in a future issue.
Why do you love being a library media specialist? Let me know.
Do you have a helpful tip, lesson plan, or something that you would like to share? Send it in.

Donna Milner named Georgia's Media Specialist of the Year

Donna Milner has been named the Georgia Library Media Association's 2004 Media Specialist of the Year.
"We are all extremely proud of this honor that Ms. Milner has received," said Sugarmill Elementary Principal Mike Van Horn. "She certainly deserves a lot of recognition. She has been absolutely wonderful for this school."
Donna has been the media specialist at Sugarmill Elementary for the past three years. She also serves as district co-chairperson for the Georgia Library Media Association.
Donna is well known for her energetic approach (see hula picture above) in helping students and faculty members with their media center needs and for promoting a love of reading in kids.
"Any success I'm having is due to the support and creative opportunities I get here at Sugarmill Elementary," she said. "This is really a wonderful school and I love working here."

GALILEO Express Links

Are there particular GALILEO databases that are especially useful to your students and teachers, but aren't always easy to find in those long database menus? Have you ever wished that you could put direct links to your most-used databases on your website or in your media center computers' browser favorites, or put addresses for those databases into handouts or newsletters? Now you can do all these things with GALILEO Express Links.

To create a GALILEO Express Link for a database, find that database in a GALILEO menu, then click the blue map pin icon to the right of the database's name and description. On the next page, right-click on the name of the database to add it to your browser's favorites, or copy the address that appears just below the database name to use in a webpage or handout. The next time you want to use the database, try using the GALILEO Express Link you just captured: you'll find that you go straight to the database's search screen! Express Links even work at home: GALILEO simply prompts you for your current password, then takes you to the database. To create a list of Express Links for all of your GALILEO databases, click the map pin icon next to the name of any database, then select "Generate a formatted list of links for all databases for your institution" under the "Sitebuilding Options" heading on the next page.

Though we encourage our users to start their GALILEO sessions at the GALILEO homepage (http://www.galileo.usg.edu) for access to the entire range of resources available in Georgia's Virtual Library, we know that sometimes it's more useful to go directly to the database you need--and with GALILEO Express Links, you can do just that. For more information, please visit these pages:

WorldCat Available Again at K-12 Schools

Don't forget that WorldCat is once again available to K-12 schools through GALILEO this year. WorldCat is the largest, most comprehensive bibliographic database in the world, containing records of items owned by over 9,000 institutions in more than 80 countries. Use WorldCat to find information about popular or rare books, periodicals, videos, recordings, and other items, then learn what libraries in your area or around the world own them. This database can help you locate a book for a teacher or student, learn more about an item you'd like to purchase for your collection, or find a new publication related to any topic. Visit http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/ to learn more, or start using WorldCat through GALILEO today. To make it easier, here's a GALILEO Express Link!
