DOE Media List Service
Would you like to be a member of a brand new list service from the Department of Education? This mailing list will serve to communicate information from the DOE to K-12 school library media specialists in Georgia. Unlike other list services, this will be a post only site. You will receive communications, notices, and updates from the Department of Educational Technology & Media. You will receive minimal emails about conferences, board policies, and staff development opportunities. When you subscribe to the list service, you will receive information on how to unsubscribe.
To sign up for the list service use your email provider (home or school-wherever you wish to receive your mail). Send a message to: join-doemedia@list.doe.k12.ga.us
Do not put anything in the subject area or the body of the message. You will receive a confirmation email to which you will need to respond. That's all you need to do.
The Department of Education is excited about this opportunity to communicate with the library media specialists in the state. This list service was previously announced in last month's newsletter. At this writing, over 300 people have joined the list service. We experienced just a few glitches in the beginning, but those problems have been worked out.

The Spotlight is on:
The Cedartown Middle School Media Center Web Page. The Media Center Web Page at Cedartown Middle is full of interesting and important information for its patrons. There is a section for evaluating Web sources, how to cite sources, sites of the day featuring classroom teachers and the units they are teaching, and a whole lot more. Susan Brown and Sharon Tinnan are the media specialists. Susan is the Webmaster and she also designed the school Web Page. Susan has incorporated her collaboration with teachers on the Sites of the Day page. She does most of the web page work at home using Claris Home Page but she is experimenting with Dreamweaver. She does the original graphics in Fireworks. She says that keeping the page current takes just a couple of hours a week. Susan also says that LM Net and the EdTech listservs give her many ideas for pages and links. The Pathfinders she does are entirely teacher/curriculum driven. Teachers come to her with the assignment they are planning and they collaborate on the final product the students will be expected to produce. Susan then searches for materials that will meet the objectives. Susan says that her district Webmaster has always been a huge support.

Delicious Fund Raising Idea!
Jaye Masters, Media Specialist at Hawthorne Elementary in Hampton, has discovered a delicious way to add to her Media Center budget. The children who wanted to participate sold Otis Spunkemeyer cookies. According to Jaye, the response from parents was overwhelming. Several parents requested additional forms because of the size of their orders. The Media Center received 40% of the monies received. Hawthorne Elementary Media Center made thousands of dollars in a short amount of time.
