Showcase Opportunities!

You are invited to a Showcase Opportunity. The Georgia Department of Education recognized outstanding media programs at the May 2002 GBOE meeting. Three exemplary media programs were selected for this recognition: Manning Oaks Elementary for grades K-5, Feagin Mill Middle for grades 6-8, and Brunswick High School for grades 9-12. Peer media specialists and DOE staff evaluated the media program based on the school's written application, a telephone interview, and an on-site visit. Now you have an opportunity to see how these outstanding media programs are meeting school improvement goals and enhancing student achievement.
Manning Oaks Elementary in Fulton County will be hosting their Showcase on Tuesday, October 15th from 9 A.M. until 11 A.M. Manning Oaks is located at 405 Cumming Street in Alpharetta, Georgia. Feagin Mill Middle School in Houston County is celebrating their honor on Thursday, October 3rd. Marianne Chapman, Media Specialist, has opened her Library Media Center to visitors from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M. with a presentation at 10:30 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. Feagin Mill Middle is located at 1200 Feagin Mill Road in Warner Robins. The school's telephone number is 912-953-0430. Brunswick High School will host their Showcase Opportunity on Thursday, October 17th. Paula Galland and Pam Williams lead their media center from 7 A.M. until 7 P.M. every day. They invite visitors to stop by anytime and see how an outstanding high school media center operates. Brunswick High School is located at 3920 Habersham Street, Brunswick. Storytelling Workshops

The Georgia Public Library Service is pleased to announce six half-day workshops featuring the acclaimed musician, author, and storyteller Esther Nelson. These free workshops are open to media specialists who work with children and will focus on storytelling and the use of music and dance in the library setting.

Workshop on SIRS Discoverer and SIRS Researcher
The Georgia Public Library Service is offering a series of workshops for media specialists and staff who work with children and young adults. The times and places of the workshops are listed below. The workshops will be led by trainers from SIRS Publishing, Inc. and will focus on SIRS Discoverer and SIRS Researcher. Both of these programs are available through GALILEO. The free, half-day workshops will include hands-on searching and instructional time. You may choose to attend a morning session from 9 AM until noon or an afternoon session from 1 PM until 4 PM. Space is limited, so register early. Use the registration form that is attached to this newsletter.

You Need TLC!
The Technology Leadership Conference is October 23-25 in Athens. The theme for this year's conference is "Getting it Done: Securing Technology in Today's World." October 24th will be dedicated to K-12 Library/Media Specialists. Some of the presenters include Sherri Booker of Cobb County, Fred Haws of Rome City Schools, June Weis, Rhonda Hefner-Packer of Georgia Public Broadcasting, Steve Dunn of Pelham City Schools, Leah Jones of Savannah/Chatham County, Heather Friedman of Alpha Smart, Philip McArdle, and Lauren Fancher from GALILEO, and the three Exemplary Media Program recipients. Dr. Laura Gasaway, noted author and copyright expert, will have a session on Friday, October 25th. The conference will be held at The Classic Center.
