PREFACE
This report sup?lements the annual report, "G'2orgia Public Schools Certificates," issued by the Division of Research and Statistics. This report incorporates a number of facets of Georgia teacher characteristics which indicate that teaching is a complex and dynamic enterprise. It is, however, in a context of change that the limited data presented sho~ld be reviewed.
A perusal of this report will show the following: (1) many beginning teachers teach for only a short time; (2) more than 12 percent of those prepared to teach in Georgia do not enter teaching. However, this percentage is higher than the 20 percent prepared to teach nation-wide who do not enter teaching. The tables also show: the low ratio of men to women in teaching and the shortage of teachers in relation to the number prepared to teach.
O~e should also note the low number of teachers prepared for special education, trade and industrial education, industrial arts, physics and certain other areas. There is a growing number of teachers, as well as a growing recognition of the need for well qualified teachers. All the tables are intended to present interesting facts regarding Georgia teachers.

TABLE XIII (Continued) ELEMENTARY, SECONDARY, AND UNGRADED TEACHERS PREPARED
IN THE UNITED STATES, BY STATE, 1965-66*
* Due to the unavailability of 1966-67 data from the other states, all statistics presented in this table represent 1965-66 figures. Source: Teacher Supply and Demand in Public Schools, 1967. National Education Association, Research Report 1967-R18, 1967, pp. 68-84. In 1965-66, there were 79,669 elementary, 114,549 secondary, and 10,700 ungraded teachers prepared in the United States. Georgia ranked twentysix in the nation with a total of 2,922 teachers prepared. This figure was 1.4 percent of the national total. Georgia has 2.2 percent of the nation's children to educate. It appears the ratio of prlpared teachers to the number of children to educate should be improved. At the elementary level Georgia prepared 1,127 teachers or 0.5 percent of the national total. The number of secondary teachers prepared in Georgia was 1,667 or 0.8 percent of those prepared in the United States.
