Letter from Mr. Richard Woods Georgia's School Superintendent
Dear CTAE Educators and Stakeholders:
As I begin my term as State School Superintendent, there's something I'm sure of: "one-size-fits-all" doesn't work for education. Our students need options; they need to leave our schools with real, relevant skills, equipped for the paths ahead. I'd like to offer my thanks to the CTAE educators who are making that happen. I am committed to supporting CTAE in Georgia, and supporting you. Together, we can change outcomes for our students and ensure that they are prepared to thrive.
Sincerely,

Richard Woods Georgia's School Superintendent

Greetings from Pam Smith CTAE State Director (Interim)
Dear CTAE Team: I am honored to serve as Interim CTAE State Director. I appreciate the tremendous support and assistance from the Georgia Department of Education CTAE team and those in the field. As Director of Curriculum and Instruction, I enjoy the ongoing collaboration and communication with CTAE staff and stakeholders. Currently, we are working together on a Computer Science Task Force in response to the Governor's expectation for the State Board of Education to provide opportunities for high school students to take Computer Science courses that meet foreign language, or fourth mathematics, or fourth science requirements. The Task Force has been asked to consider the following:
course options that would meet the approval of the University System of Georgia (USG) and the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) for admission to post-secondary institutions, and
course options that would meet the needs of business and industry Pending State Board of Education approval to post Rule 160-4-2-.20 LIST OF STATE-FUNDED K-8 SUBJECTS AND 9-12 COURSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING NINTH GRADE IN 2008 AND SUBSEQUENT YEARS for public review and comment in February, more information about course credit and designated Computer Science courses will be forthcoming for use beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. Best wishes and feel free to contact me if you have questions or need assistance. Sincerely,
Pam Smith, (404) 463-4141

Colquitt County High School's HOSA organization and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students sponsor two community blood drives each year; one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. HOSA collaborates with the Red Cross and Blood One to facilitate blood drives. In November, the Blood One drive was a great success in collecting 270 pints of blood with 300 students and school
personnel participating. HOSA hopes to surpass this amount in the upcoming Spring Blood Drive. This community service project requires careful planning, along with flexibility
and support from the school staff.
The HOSA members and advisors believe this is a worthwhile contribution to the community
to help save lives.

Model High's Gregory (Trey) Thompson has joined an elite list of high school students across the state to earn Microsoft Master Certification, as only nine (9) students in Georgia earned this certificate last year! The remarkable aspect of Thompson earning this rare distinction is that he is "legally blind."
Thompson's success in Microsoft certification has sparked a career interest. Thompson stated "Maybe I could even work for Microsoft Corporation someday."

Many important events are occurring as we work through the winter and into the spring. The legislative session is underway and there will be proposed legislation that could affect CTAE. CTSOs will conduct an Expo at the Capitol on February 17, 2015. Additionally, the CTSOs will begin to conduct their annual State Conferences from now through April. For information on dates and other details, please visit www.gactso.org.
This is also the time of year when the Program of Work (POW) for extended day must be completed and local systems must formulate their requests for extended day funding. Below are some reminders for this process: 1. All monthly reports documenting the
hours worked should be completed. 2. The Annual Report must be completed
to activate the FY16 POW. 3. If you did not achieve the points needed
to meet each standard, an improvement plan and approval will need to be completed at the discretion of your local CTAE Director. This is also the time of year when Industry Certification site visits begin. Hopefully, all the goals and aspirations you had for your students this year are being realized and by the end of the year you will have much to brag about.
Work-Based Learning/Youth Apprenticeship The 2015 Youth Apprenticeship Conference will be held February 22-24, 2015, in Savannah. Featured speakers will be State School Superintendent Richard Woods, and Congressman Buddy Carter, as well as key business leaders presenting sessions on a variety of topics. Registration is conducted

through CTAERN. For more information about the conference, email Judy Beaver, president of the WBL/YAP affiliate at jbeaver2@wayne.k12.ga.us.

Update from Georgia's CTSOs
Georgia FBLA has the current National FBLA Southern Region Vice President Nick Crawford from Ringgold High School.

Georgia CTSOs are known across the nation for their core values of commitment, conviction, education, integrity, leadership, professionalism, recognition, service and teamwork. High standards of excellence continue to be set by Georgia CTSOs in every area and below are a few of the outstanding achievements so far this year:
Receptions were held at the Fall Leadership Conferences of several Georgia CTSOs to show appreciation to the members of the Georgia legislature. Special thanks to Tommy Benton, Terry England, Stacy Evans and Mike Glanton for attending and to all members of the legislative community for their constant support and advocacy for Georgia CTSOs!
Anna Johnson, CTI State Reporter from East Paulding High School in Dallas, GA, represented CTSO members from across the state at the 2014 CTAE Legislative Advisory Commission Meeting.
Georgia DECA raised funds for over 2400 books for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for the 2014-2015 community service projects and completed over 100 projects to raise literacy awareness.

Georgia FCCLA is pleased to support two National Officers: Shivani Dhir and David Jefferson -- both from Houston County High School.
FFA held the first Teen CERT training conducted by Richmond County Emergency Management Agency and HOSA members from AR Johnson High School completed all 10 training sessions to become members of the Richmond County CERT team 11.
SkillsUSA Georgia is leading the nation in the number of quality SkillsUSA chapters in the new Chapter Excellence Program and has a membership report showing an increase of over 1,000 members.
To date, Georgia TSA leads the nation with 202 affiliated chapters and Georgia is home to three (3) of the six (6) members of the TSA National Officer Team.
Attendance records were broken at many of the Georgia CTSO events held last fall and during the months of February, March and April. Each CTSO will host a State Leadership Conference.
Volunteers are still needed to serve as competitive events judges for each of these events and for information on how you can serve, please contact Sylvia Phillips, State CTSO Coordinator at ctsocoordinator@gmail.com.

Agriculture Education Chip Bridges, Program Manager
jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us

Someone recently told me that we are closer to the year 2030 than we are from the year 2000. That was difficult to consider, as Y2K seemed only a few short years ago, and to think that we will be in the year 2030 in a shorter amount of time--what is going on? I suppose the sentiment "Time flies when you are having fun" must be true, because time seems to move faster and we are definitely having fun. This is due to the great support and leadership provided by agricultural education. As leaders in your school, the success of your agricultural education students is dependent upon your level of involvement and support. This does not go unnoticed and we are truly thankful for the way each of you promote and expect the best out of the agricultural education program at your schools.
One such example is the Valdosta, Georgia area billboard shown below, showcasing nine (9) National FFA Champions from Lowndes County High School. These students did not achieve National Champion status without the support and encouragement from a quality agriculture teacher supported by a great community with tremendous leadership administrative staff within the school system.

Providing a high level of support for your
agricultural education program is our goal.
The Agricultural Education team is available to
support the growth of your successful
Agricultural Education Program, so please
contact any of our team members if we can
assist you.

The Need for Quality Agricultural Education Instructors
Georgia Ag Ed is fortunate to have experienced tremendous growth over the past four years. FFA membership is at a record high of more than 37,000 students. More importantly, the addition of new programs has created a real need to secure more highly-qualified and trained agriculture teachers. There have been more than 30 NEW agricultural education programs added in the past four years and some existing programs have added Ag teachers to meet the increased enrollment. Georgia's Agricultural Education Program is committed to meeting the recruitment need for teachers and will encourage more students to consider an Agricultural teaching career.

If you know of a current student that would be well suited to take on the task of becoming an agriculture teacher, we would like to meet that student. With the help and encouragement of the local CTAE Director and the agriculture teacher, we can not only identify potential candidates, but we can offer support for becoming a future teacher. We look forward to hearing from you in identifying our future FFA Advisors and Ag teachers.

State School Nurse Update Georgina Howard, RN, MS
ghoward@doe.k12.ga.us
School Nurse Program
Seasonal Flu (Influenza)
School Nurses support health and learning, especially during the flu season. In Georgia, the flu season begins in early October and can run as late in the year as May. Although we are in the middle of the flu season, there is still a long window of opportunity for contracting the influenza virus. There is more than one type of flu strain circulating, and the vaccine protects against at least three strains of circulating virus. This season, the predominant strain has been H3N2, which is "a nastier flu virus" than the other flu viruses.
While the flu can vary from season to season, the fact remains that the single most effective way to prevent the flu is the flu vaccine. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides useful educational materials for promoting good health habits during the flu season. Please share this information:
