CTAE STATE NEWSLETTER
Volume 1, Issue 4 Spring 2014

Greetings from David Turner CTAE State Director
Last week I had the pleasure of attending our annual advisement meeting with my daughter's high school advisor. As I sat there in the meeting I thought about how much CTAE has changed over the past four years. I can remember when students were viewed as being either "academic" or "vocational." Actually, that was the mindset four years ago. If a student was considered on the academic track, he or she would have been discouraged from taking a CTAE course.
Today, CTAE courses are promoted to all students. Society is beginning to understand that CTAE courses are a great resource for building upon and reinforcing academic standards. Our students are benefiting even more academically from the standards in the new pathway courses as they develop much-needed technical and soft skills.
You should have received an email from Dr. Mike Buck, Chief Academic Officer and Chief of Staff for the Department of Education, letting you know that the new courses are posted on the DOE webpage. We appreciate all of the support and guidance that Dr. Buck has given to CTAE during the development of the new course standards.
Over the next few months the CTAE team will be conducting professional learning workshops on the new courses. I encourage you to participate in these excellent learning opportunities.
The registration for the summer GACTE conference will open on April 15. I hope that all CTAE professionals will attend this year. The conference will be a great time to learn about our new career clusters and pathways.
I appreciate all that each of you do for the students in our state.

Mt. Zion High School Clayton County Air Force JROTC
Ashante S. Finnie describes why her Air Force JROTC (AFJROTC) courses changed her purpose in life and gave her a career path to follow:
"The JROTC program provided me with opportunities to grow as a young adult and to help mentor others. Everything I have accomplished has been a milestone for me but also an inspiration for others. The one thing I am most proud of is the ability to make a difference in someone else's life. I continually strive to lead by example to my peers. I have helped prevent drop-outs and assisted with scholarships. My efforts and motivations not only shape who I am as an individual, but they also help boost my confidence. As I continue my education in college, I intend to continue on this road to greatness. All in all, I just hope to inspire some people along the way."
Ashante's AFJROTC Instructor Comments:
"Currently Cadet Finnie is the Group Commander for GA-931, member of the Kitty Hawk Air Honor Society with a 3.5 GPA, commander of the Armed Color
Guard Drill Competition team. She spearheaded the development and implementation of the first ever cadet recognition program and has been accepted to the South Carolina University on a full four-year volleyball scholarship."

Brunswick High School-Glynn County Early Childhood Education

Johnson High SchoolHall County Audio-Video Technology and Film

Several students in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program at Brunswick High School (BHS) completed the required coursework and recently passed the End of the Pathway Assessment (EOPA). The students will receive the appropriate credentials that will attest to their successful mastery of course standards. They will also be eligible at some colleges and university for course credit if they pursue studies in the field of education.

As an Audio-Video Technology and Film pathway completer, Andrew Todd went to work as an intern with Gainesville County Government Channel TV18. Here are some excerpts from his recent internship reflection paper:
"My work experience has exceeded my expectations. Being there Monday-Friday for at least two hours a day
is just awesome to me. I get so much more out of the program then I ever thought. I am learning so much and getting more and more responsibility, which I love. The
fact that Ronny and his assistant trust me with camera gear and going out to record events on my own is awesome."
Andrew's exemplary work ethic is demonstrated by his attitude, punctuality and grades. Andrew has a top-notch mentor, the Station Manager of TV-18. The Station Manager and his staff are aware of program expectations and diligently teach and model strong work ethic. Andrew has also been named as Johnson High School's Intern of the Month.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES
Three (3) Family and Consumer Sciences pathways have been developed for the Human Services Cluster.

INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION GRANTS UPDATE
For systems wishing to apply for industry certification grants to get programs industry certified during 20142015, please plan to complete an Industry Certification Application during the open Consolidated Grant/Local Plan Application process this spring. All CTAE Administrators are encouraged to print off the Industry Certification Checklist from the CTAE Industry Certification Page and review the checklist with your instructors before applying for the grant.
Additionally, administrators and instructors are encouraged to print off the industry certification standards for their area of interest to ensure that the respective program is positioned to successfully undergo the process. State Board approval is required before industry certification grant funds can be dispensed to local systems. Your superintendent will be notified of your system's grant status typically after the June State Board of Education meeting. Any grant funds awarded to the program must be expended between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Programs areas that receive grant funds are expected to complete the industry certification process during the grant year for which the funds are awarded. Instructors in program areas that received industry certification grant funds are required to attend an industry certification workshop. Information regarding industry certification workshops can be located on the CTAE Resource Network. To review the Industry Certification Checklist and to see industry certification standards by program area, go to the following link:

CTAE PATHWAYS UPDATE All courses aligned to the 17 Career Clusters/Pathways have been adopted by the State Board of Education, except for six (6) courses in Aviation and Distribution and Logistics. These other six courses are expected to be adopted by April. All schools should be teaching the new courses and phasing out old courses from their master schedule. Students that have completed a mixture of old Peach State Pathway Concentrations and New Career Cluster Pathway courses will be counted as pathway completers for the FY14 school year. The data set for which courses will count for pathway completion in FY14 will be available on the website soon.
EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM OF WORK (POW) The new POW for FY15 is now active on the CTAERN website. Teachers must successfully complete their Annual Report in order to activate the new POW. As a reminder, the process of approving teachers for extended day and monitoring monthly reports and the annual report is a local system function. The role of the GaDOE is only to establish/revise the standards and collaborate with the CTAERN in making the POW process available. Program Specialists do not make any decisions about which teachers are approved for extended day or the local budgeting process for the payment of extended day salary. All questions regarding the POW process and the CTAERN website should be directed to hotline@CTAERN.org or a call can be placed to the help desk at 1-866-454-2823.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES There are a multitude of professional learning opportunities being planned which focus on implementing the new Career Cluster courses and industry certification workshops. All professional learning workshops will be posted on the CTAERN. All CTAE teachers should check the workshop postings for your instructional area on CTAERN and make plans to attend the appropriate workshop. Teachers who have questions about professional learning should contact their appropriate Program Specialist.

STATE SCHOOL NURSE UPDATE FROM GEORGINA HOWARD, RN
Change begets change, this is a frequent saying and it truly applies to the area of school health services. Our school nurses frequently respond to changing health
regulations and mandates. Keeping everyone informed and educated can be a challenge. One way to say to stay informed is visiting the GaDOE School Nurse Exchange webpage at schoolnurse.gadoe.org. These resources are useful to school nurses and others.
There are two changes important for all to know about for next school year. Please help get the word out to our parents.
All students born on or after January 1, 2002 and entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade in Georgia need proof of an adolescent pertussis (whooping cough) booster vaccination (Tdap) and an adolescent meningococcal vaccination(MCV4) All new entrants transferring into the 8th through 12th grades are also subject to the new requirements.
More than 138 school nurses and colleagues attended a webinar about the 7th Grade Student New Vaccine Requirements. You can listen to this recorded webinar by visiting the School Nurse Exchange and clicking on the link. Also included are background documents for your use. This information includes educational materials for parents.
Another change for the 2014 2015 is the Georgia Department of Public Health Form 3300, Certificate of Vision, Hearing, Dental and Nutrition Screening. This form is required when a child is being admitted for the first time to public schools in Georgia. During the 2013 2014 school, school authorities could accept the old form or the new form. However, for the 2014-2015 school years only the new Form 300(Rev 2013) shall be accepted.
The front and back of the new Georgia Department of Public Health Form 3300, Certificate of Vision, Hearing, Dental and Nutrition Screening form contains updated information and there is also an added section for nutrition screening. Please help inform parents and school staff about these important changes for next school year.
