CTAE STATE NEWSLETTER
Volume 1, Issue 6 September 2014
Greetings from David Turner CTAE State Director
Dear Friends, As we begin a new school year, I have six questions for you and I hope that you will take a few minutes to reflect on these questions:
1. Who was the teacher that had the greatest positive impact on you? 2. Why did you select that teacher? 3. How did that person change your life?
4. Who was the teacher that had the most negative impact on you? 5. Why did you select that teacher? 6. How did that person change your life?
As educators, we have the opportunity to be either a positive influence on the success of our students or a negative anchor on their future. Our words and actions have lasting impacts on the lives of our students.
I had many teachers who I really respect and admire. I remember my fourth grade teacher Jeri Garner, my fifth grade teacher Ginny McGee, my geometry teacher Lynn Jackson, my government teacher Martha Blake, my agriculture teacher Gerald Wilson and my high school principal Garry McManus. Each of these exceptional people made a tremendous difference in my life and were responsible for preparing me for my future. I appreciate all that these people did for me and the countless other students in my hometown.
As we begin a new school year, I want to encourage you to be the educator that is remembered for being a positive influence on our children. We must remember that this is a very anxious and exciting time in the life of all students, parents, administrators and teachers. It is our duty to make sure that every student has a positive learning experience in our CTAE classrooms.
What a great time to be a part of the CTAE program! With the incredible support and leadership of State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Mike Buck, we have the opportunity to do provide incredible opportunities for our current and future students.
We are very fortunate to have our CTAE staff at the Georgia Department of Education. Very few states have the resources that are available to all of us in Georgia. Please feel free to call on our team for assistance or support as we are happy to assist you at any time.
I hope that you have a great 2014-2015 school year. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, I always welcome your viewpoint. Please do not hesitate to give me a call or email me at any time.
I look forward to working with each of you.

Rachel Peeples, Southeastern Technical College student and Richmond Hill High School senior, had to wait until
she was old enough for dual enrollment.
Rachel Peeples is a Richmond Hill high school senior who is focused on the goal of owning a bakery and is taking some important steps to get
there, beginning with dual enrollment with Southeastern Technical College's Baking and Pastry program. For fall 2014 she has enrolled in the Move on When Ready (MOWR) program, which allows high school students to attend classes at college full
time. MOWR students simultaneously earn high school and college credit, but also graduate with
their high school class.
Honor Student, Brianna Johnson
Move On When Ready (MOWR) provides high school students the opportunity to "jump start" postsecondary education during the high school years. The opportunities within the
MOWR legislation provides students an educational alternative other than the traditional high school setting or school day structure and also provides students an option to earn postsecondary credit before graduating high school.
Brianna Johnson was able to earn a part-time position with a drugstore in the IT Department using the skills she learned at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. Brianna is now employed and using the skills she has recently learned. Brianna stated, "I had some great instructors both during my core classes and in my computer courses. Their guidance and support made all the difference in my experience." Brianna plans to further her education as she works on a Bachelor Degree in information technology.

FY15 Perkins Five Year Compliance Reviews
The FY15 Perkins Five-Year Compliance Reviews will begin in September and continue through December, with 34 school systems being visited this year. Assessment and restructuring of CTAE programs should be a continual process within the school system. This process should be an integral part of a school system's plan to assess the overall effectiveness and/or efficiency of the system's programs and services. The assessment process provides vital information in determining the extent to which the system's goals and objectives are being met, and ultimately how students are being served. The Perkins Compliance Review and Self-Study process will assist the local school system in its long-range planning,
which is a requirement of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.
Tips for Successful Financial Management of

The beginning of each school year brings great hope and potential that this will be the best year for our schools. This year is no different. There are so many great things taking place in agricultural education, and perhaps this will be the best year ever. One of the most exciting things taking place early in the 2014-2015 school year is the preparation for a challenging and highly competitive National FFA event. Since skills and technical knowledge learned in the agricultural education class is on display during FFA events and activities, this is a very important component of the agricultural education program. We are proud of the following school systems that will have students involved in representing Georgia at the National level. It is impressive to note that 58 different school systems in Georgia have an agricultural education program being recognized nationally this year. Your support for the agriculture education students and teachers at your school is vital to their success. They have this opportunity to gain some recognition on a national level because of your support.

Update from Dr. John Pritchett
jpritchett@doe.k12.ga.us
Creating a high school master schedule can be akin to a chess match. Scheduling CTAE courses into the master schedule using Peach State program concentration courses and Georgia Career Cluster pathways and courses can be overwhelming. Scheduling teachers to teach more than one career pathway can also be an adventure.
To help with this pressure, the CTAE division created a narrated PowerPoint for school counselors, administrators, and any educator involved in scheduling to review and generate helpful ideas.
Please visit ctae.gadoe.org and click on the Presentations link to locate this narrated PowerPoint entitled, "Scheduling for Concentration and Career Cluster Pathway Completion".

Ordering Process for the Career Cluster Ring Cards
Materials and resources dedicated to informing students and parents about career pathways, dual enrollment, and a senior project were shipped to the attention of the LEA Superintendent or designee at the end of July or first of August. Local CTAE Directors may order more of the materials.
See Below...
Each high school should have received 60 copies of the Capstone Cards. These cards were
designed to inform students in a couple of classes about the project and help initiate the work. Cards can
be collected and used with additional senior classes, parent groups, community business meetings to
inform local business people about potential students' contacting them, and for general information.
Another item included in the sent materials included the Dual Enrollment Credit Now Parent Flyer. to meet the mandate of the BRIDGE Law that all 8th grade students and parents/guardians be
informed about dual enrollment options. The Dual Enrollment flyer was sent so that each parent or guardian of 8th grade student(s) can receive a copy to review.
The last item shipped this summer was the Career Cluster Ring Cards with updated information
about each Career Cluster, career pathways, CTSOs, Industry Credentials, Dual Enrollment, Support
Services for Special Populations, Work-Based Learning, and graduation rule. The ring cards were
developed so that school counselors, teachers, and administrators could use and reference these cards with
students they advise and help to graduate as a pathway completer. To distribute ring cards to each system,
quantities were allocated to middle and high schools based on enrollment. The charts below for middle
and high school illustrate how to disseminate the ring cards.

State School Nurse Update Georgina Howard, RN, MS ghoward@doe.k12.ga.us
I hope you enjoyed your summer and are fully recharged to begin this school year. Back to school is always an exciting and busy time for school nurses. The students are coming back to school with stories of their vacations and hopes for a new school year. School nurses are the ones on the frontlines of pediatric care in the schools in Georgia. The school nursing practice differs vastly across the state from large to small rural communities, depending on the needs of the students served. School staff view the school nurse as a valuable resource. Please visit the webpage at www.schoolnurse.gadoe.org. The School Nurse Exchange provides a collection of resources for school nurses to keep abreast of current trends and best practices in the leadership and delivery of school based health services. This webpage serves as a vehicle for exchanging ideas and suggestions to support school nurse programs across Georgia.
