Save the Dates

The implementation of our new Career Clusters and Pathways is now complete. You should be using the new courses in each of the pathways that you offered at your school.

Please make sure that you are providing up-to-date information on the different components of the CTAE program. Consistent and accurate communication between the teachers, school counselors, and administrators is critical for the success of our students.

Please check out the CTAE Pathway Courses section of the GaDOE CTAE webpage, http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instructionand-Assessment/CTAE/Pages/cluster-pathwaycourses.aspx outlining the list of CTAE courses for all of pathways. Please plan to regularly visit the website to learn more about the options that are available to our students. If you have questions about the process of allowing students to complete a pathway started under the old courses, please contact the Program Specialist for that pathway.
As you already know, there are two key CCRPI and Perkins Federal Grant measures that are specific to the CTAE pathway program. (1) The first is the percentage of CTAE students that are Pathway Completers. (2) The second is the number of CTAE Pathway Completers that successfully complete an End of Pathway Assessment (EOPA). I encourage you to make certain that you are offering to your students the correct courses to become pathway completers and that you provide access to the appropriate EOPA for each pathway.
I hope that you are working with your school counselors to ensure that your system is focusing on career awareness in elementary grades, career exploration in the middle school grades, and career development in our high schools.

Another great resource for all CTAE staff is your School Nurse. Did you know that your school nurse can advise you on proper procedures to follow in the event of an accident or injury in our CTAE labs?
Please take the time to talk to your school nurse about your programs and potential accidents that could occur. Being prepared can save a life.
Do you have a STEM school? Did you know that your school could become STEM certified? If you are interested in becoming a STEM-certified school, please contact Dr. Gilda Lyon at glyon@doe.k12.ga.us to discuss the requirements.
I encourage all of the CTAE Directors to attend the Winter Leadership Conference on February 4-6, 2015. Please see the Save the Date section of this newsletter or contact your CTAE Regional Coordinator for more information.
I am very proud of the job that the CTAE teachers and administrators across our state do each day. I am also proud of the CTAE Division team here at the Georgia Department of Education. I believe that we have the best state staff in the nation. I hope that you will contact the CTAE staff if we can ever assist you. Please know that our team is always here to support you!
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to give me a call or email me at any time.
David

Accountability and Improvement Brenda Barker, Program Manager
brbarker@doe.k12.ga.us

The FY15 Perkins Five-Year Compliance Reviews began in September and continues through December, with 34 school systems being visited this year. Assessment and restructuring of CTAE programs should
be a continual process within the school system. This process should be an integral part of a school system's plan to assess the overall effectiveness and/or efficiency of the system's programs and services. The assessment process provides vital information in determining the extent to which the system's goals
and objectives are being met, and ultimately how students are being served. The Perkins Compliance Review and Self-Study process will assist the local school system in its long-range planning, which is a
requirement of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.

First Georgia STEM Forum a Success
CTAE, math, and science educators (946 attendees) joined together to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at the first Georgia STEM Forum October 20-21, 2014, in Athens. This was the first time that CTAE and core content teachers K-12 convened under one roof for a professional learning conference to learn how to implement STEM in schools. The Forum was sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education and the Career, Technical, and Agricultural Resource Network. Workshops on maker spaces, project-based learning, integrated instruction, and engaging business and community partnerships were just some of the highlights. Debra Howell, a business partner from Georgia Power stated "I just kept learning. This was one of the most exciting conferences I have attended." The positive response from attendees has the organizers already thinking about next year.

Dr. John Pritchett, Middle School Curriculum Coordinator jpritchett@doe.k12.ga.us
Instructional Resources for CTAE Foundation Courses
To update and better prepare students for career and college opportunities, instructional resources for the
Georgia Career Cluster and Pathway foundation courses are currently being developed. These
instructional resources are being developed with industry concepts as the central focus of every activity, followed by multiple ways to integrate technology and web 2.0 tools into the student work.
Students will also be able to work through differentiated activities and apply the course standards and concepts to a business simulation activity operated and led by student teams. As more content is developed and approved, course units will be found on a new instructional resource link within the CTAERN web site. Contact Dr. John Pritchett,

FY2015 End of Pathway Assessment (EOPA) Activities
As systems prepare for the FY2015 End of Pathway Assessment activities, several helpful reminders will facilitate a smooth testing process for winter and spring EOPA testing activities. Remember to go to the CTAE Assessment Web Page at: http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-
Instruction-and-Assessment/CTAE/Pages/CTAE-Georgia-
Assessments.aspx to see a copy FY2015 Technical Skill Attainment Inventory, recently updated to include additional test options for most of the pathways in the Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security Cluster. Two of the pathways (Corrections and Security/Protective Services) in this cluster did not have referenced EOPAs in the earlier publication of the inventory. Assessment Information Sheets for the new/additional exam options have been added on the CTAE Assessment Web Page as well. Oklahoma CareerTech Testing has changed the name of several of its test titles included in the Georgia inventory. These new test titles are referenced on the updated copy of the FY2015 Technical Skill Attainment Inventory.
Recently, the ASK Institute updated its Fundamental Marketing Concepts and Fundamentals Business Concepts blueprints. Here are the new links to the updated blueprints
Fundamental Marketing Concepts: http://www.nocti.org/PDFs/ASK/8339%20&%208355%20ASK%20Fun damental%20Marketing%20Concepts.pdf
Fundamental Business Concepts: http://www.nocti.org/PDFs/ASK/8238%20&%208358%20ASK%20Fun damental%20Business%20Concepts.pdf
All Assessment Information Sheets for these two exam options are updated on the CTAE Assessment Web Page. CTAE Administrators and CTAE Instructors should ensure that the most recent blueprint is being utilized for these two exam options. One last reminder - before ordering exam vouchers, refer to the Assessment Information Sheet for the most current exam pricing and ordering information. We appreciate the tremendous efforts by our CTAE instructors, administrators, and students towards participation in EOPA testing activities. For questions regarding EOPA, please contact Mamie Hanson, mhanson@doe.k12.ga.us.

Gary Mealer, Program Specialist
gmealer@doe.k12.ga.us
Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit--Governor Nathan Deal formed a task force to review the four current dual enrollment programs. The charge to the task force was to determine how the dual enrollment process could be streamlined for student. The task force met over the past several months and has completed its work. We will make you aware of any changes as a result of the task force recommendations.
JROTC--The State Advisory Committee recently met in Macon. The biggest news is the Army has invited representative staff from the Ga. Professional Standards Commission and the Ga. Dept. of Education to visit Fort Knox to review the JROTC instructor training process. This is the first major step in the evaluation and possible teacher certification provider approval process. Instructors completing the training would be candidates for applying for certification immediately upon completing the military training.

system for 16 years and have experienced firsthand many changes in curriculum, teacher evaluations, and other areas. I have several goals that

involve all our stakeholders: 1. To provide our industry partners with workers who have the skills

necessary to be successful in the workplace; 2. To provide a curriculum for our students that is both

rigorous and relevant to today's and tomorrow's workplace; and 3. To provide professional development,

resources, and support to our teachers so that they are able to make the first two items a reality. It is my

pledge to listen to your suggestions and seek your assistance in making Georgia the leader in Business

Education.

In addition, four webinars are available for registration on the CTAERN Resource Network: Networking Fundamentals-CTAERN4169; Computer Science Principles-CTAERN4159; Digital DesignCTAERN4170; Middle School-CTAERN4158; and IT Academy-CTAERN4157. Dr. Mark V. Crenshaw mcrenshaw@doe.k12.ga.us

Our programs allow us to unleash the human potential related to STEM's technology and engineering, manufacturing, and energy education and make them the most important subjects in school and we have the pathways in which to do this. Please note that the workshops from the recentlycompleted GETEA Teacher's Conference in Savannah will be posted on the website, as well as the Tech Fest lessons shared during the conference at www.getea.org.

The ITEEA conference is just around the corner in Milwaukee, WI, March 26-28, 2015 and registration is now open http://www.iteea.org/Conference/conferenceguide.htm. We hope to see you there and bring an administrator (their registration cost is free), and they will have their own conference track http://www.iteea.org/Conference/Administrators.pdf . Special Populations - Career and Technical Instruction (CTI) and Coordinated Career Academic Education/Project Success (CCAE/PS)
As the CTAE Program Specialist for Special Populations my role is to provide curriculum and technical support along with professional development opportunities to high school teachers of Career and Technical Instruction (CTI) and Coordinated Career Academic Education/Project Success (CCAE/PS).
Our goal is to ensure students from Special Populations, enrolled in Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs, acquire the skills needed for a successful transition from high school to post-secondary school and/or employment. Professional development opportunities will be available at www.ctaern.org for Coordinated Career Academic Education (CCAE)/Project Success (PS) Coordinators and Career Technical Instruction (CTI) Coordinators. Subsequently, I would like to hear from each of you regarding the type of professional development you would like to receive this year to help familiarize yourself with the new CTAE Career Clusters and Pathways, so please email me your thoughts and ideas (tcaudell@doe.k12.ga.us).

Within the course descriptions, you will find special information when implementing specific pathways. (Ex. EMR has certain requirements for the instructor, equipment etc.). At the new course trainings this summer, "Live Binders" were created for the courses in all three of the clusters. Live Binders are similar to an electronic 3-ring binder with tabs. The tabs contain resources that teachers have shared, as well as PowerPoint presentation, updates and other information from the State Department. Please plan to share at least one activity to contribute to the binders. After sharing a resource, the teacher will receive a Live Binder invitation (new teachers can receive it by simply emailing me and telling me they are brand new). For example, there are 360 high school healthcare teachers and if everyone shares one activity, more resources would be available to improve and/or enhance instruction.

Hospitality & Tourism-Culinary Arts; Education & Training; Human Services-Family and Consumer Sciences
Daphnne L. Bonaparte dbonaparte@doe.k12.ga.us
The Culinary Arts, Education & Training and Family and Consumer Sciences Pathways remain a strong building block to improving the quality of life for individuals, families and communities across the state of Georgia. Over 15 programs have gained exemplary commendations through the industry certification process. In addition, several teachers have been honored as their school or system's teacher of the year. We continue to move forward towards our goals of recruiting highly qualified teachers, increasing the number of programs that have gained industry certification, creating professional learning communities, supporting Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and strengthening relationships with business, industry and postsecondary institutions.

Agriculture Education Chip Bridges, Program Manager
jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us
Speaking as a product of the program, agricultural education can truly make a positive difference in the lives of students. I am thankful for those opportunities provided to me by my agricultural education
teachers and FFA Advisors. I now realize that those learning experiences would not have been possible without a tremendous support system. I probably never really expressed gratitude to those school
administrators (CTAE supervisors in particular) for being so supportive of those activities and events that helped me grow so much during my time in high school. I am thankful that they had the knowledge and
leadership to see the value and importance of the agricultural education activities that helped make a positive difference in my life. And so, as a product of the program, I would like to take this time to say
THANK YOU to every CTAE supervisor / director that sees the value and importance of a quality agricultural education program. THANK YOU for your support of the activities and events that the agriculture teachers / FFA Advisors are providing to your students. I would also like to invite each of you to attend any FFA event this year. We would welcome your involvement and hope to see you as often as
possible. It is a tremendous experience to share in the growth of your students. The Agricultural Education team would love to see you soon.

Again this year, we are pleased that the Georgia Agribusiness Council (GAC) will provide the recognition for any agricultural education student that successfully meets the minimum quality requirements in any of the FFA Career Development Events. GAC represents more than 800 agribusiness members that are working together to promote the business of agriculture through economic development, environmental stewardship, and education to enhance the quality of life for all Georgians.
These industry recognized credentials support technical skill attainment and leadership skill development of students as they showcase those knowledge and skill competencies obtained while preparing for and competing in FFA Career Development Events. Last year there were more than 7600 credentials provided to Georgia students in agricultural education. Be on the look-out for the student credential this year that will be sent directly to CTAE directors from your AgEd region office for distribution to the students.

As always, we are here to help you in any way. Please contact your Region AgEd Director if you have a question about agricultural education. Here is the contact information:

CTAE STATE PROGRAM MANAGER UPDATES (continued)
Counseling / Career Development Dr. Myrel Seigler, Program Manager
mseigler@doe.k12.ga.us
Over the past few months, the GaDOE has been partnering with the Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) to work with identified systems on Counseling for College and Careers. Systems were identified based on need in the following areas: 1) Graduation Rate; 2) 9th grade failures; 3) Achievement based on EOCT scores in Math II and American Literature; and 4) Attendance. The workshops have been very successful in that we have worked with over 50 systems in developing an advisement plan to be implemented across the district. Each system that participated were required to send a team made up of at least one elementary person, one middle school person, one high school person, and at least one district level person that could make decisions for the system. Representatives from the team varied as we had counselors, assistant principals, principals, coordinators and directors, and assistant or associate superintendents. Teams were reimbursed for their travel, lodging, and meals. The feedback from the participants was positive and each system reported their plan to the groups for discussion and sharing. Our intent is to conduct at least one more workshop sometime this fall or spring. Systems will be invited based on the criteria listed above. If your system is interested, please contact me directly.
REMINDER: By April 1st, all students in grades 8 through 11 should be provided information regarding Dual Enrollment/Credit opportunities. Please check your school's procedure for ensuring compliance with this legislation.
