CTAE State Update
March 24, 2011
Audrey Bergeron CTAE State Director
Thank you for the very warm welcome you have shown me over the past few weeks. I am honored to represent such a great group of CTAE administrators and teachers in Georgia. The saying that March comes in like a lion... has certainly been appropriate for my first few weeks at the GaDOE. The GaDOE CTAE staff has been diligently trying to bring me up to speed on all the various projects. The excitement is high that this is really a new day for CTAE. CTAE has been part of the conversation in all the meetings I have attended. We are so fortunate to have great support from Dr. John Barge's office and his staff, Governor Deal, and the Georgia legislature. Dr. Barge's new vision statement links to what we do in CTAE everyday--Making Education Work for all Georgians. As we move forward with our curriculum enhancements that embrace academic integration, I am sure CTAE will become stronger and more appropriate for all students. Teaching is hard work! This hard work requires teachers that are professional and have the passion to continue to educate our students for the 21st Century workforce. We will continue to support industry certification, national credentialing, revising curriculum, and creating curriculum as needed to include various pathways under the 16 federal clusters. It was so nice meeting many of you at the drive-in administrative sessions. I hope to meet all of you before or during GACTE in July. Please make plans to attend GACTE and encourage your teachers and guidance counselors to attend. I encourage all of you to become a member of your professional organizations especially in these economic times. We need your voice at the legislative table! Our work with the Technical College System of Georgia is finally taking off. Some of you may be contacted for piloting student testing for our first state-wide articulation courses. If you can help with this project, I would appreciate it. I realize your plates are very full. All Superintendents and CTAE administrators will be receiving some information in the next few days concerning applying for federal bonds in order to revise, enhance, or create CTAE programs in your schools. This is a great opportunity for many districts to fund these programs. Informational sessions will be held next week in Hazlehurst and GaDOE.

From the Georgia Apply To College Week (GAC) Committee
We are excited to announce that Georgia Apply to College Week will continue to grow in 2011 and we invite all Georgia high schools to apply to participate! This year, the Georgia Apply to College Week initiative has been expanded to include the entire month of November and has been renamed Georgia Apply to College (GAC) to reflect this change. We are excited about the opportunity this will provide for even more Georgia high schools and their seniors to participate in this exciting program!
Georgia Apply to College (GAC) events provide Georgia high schools with an opportunity to set aside a day during which their seniors can focus on applying to college while receiving hands-on assistance from college and community volunteers. Prior to the event, participating high schools are encouraged to utilize specially developed GAC activities to help their students research and get excited about college. Those high schools selected for participation will also be sent a number of GAC materials to help make their event special.
If your school has not previously held a GAC event We encourage you to visit the Information for First Time GAC Schools, found in the "Thinking of Holding an Event?" section of our website (www.usg.edu/apply-to-college) to learn more about what is involved in holding an event.
If your school has previously held a GAC event - We encourage you to review the Information for Returning GAC Schools, found in the "Thinking of Holding an Event?" section of our website (www.usg.edu/apply-to-college) as we have made some important changes this year.
The online application can be found in both the First Time GAC School and Returning GAC School sections on the Thinking of Holding an Event?" section of our website. Please note: Even if your school applied and was not selected to participate in a previous year, we encourage you to apply to participate in 2011. As GAC continues to move towards becoming a statewide event, we plan to select even more schools to participate this year.
If your school is selected, the GAC Committee is available to answer questions, offer support to help high schools plan and hold successful events, and provides a number of materials at no cost to participating high schools. We will also provide Site Coordinator and Volunteer training to help ensure everyone has a positive Georgia Apply to College event.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the GAC Committee at GACW@usg.edu. We are looking forward to a great event in 2011!
The application deadline is Friday, April 15th.

Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) & SkillsUSA Setting Records CEFGA and SkillsUSA Georgia are at it again! The CEFGA Career Expo and SkillsUSA State Championships are on target to set a new record! CEFGA and SkillsUSA Georgia, along with other business and industry organizations, have planned another outstanding event allowing teachers and students to experience careers in construction, architecture engineering and other skill areas. At the current pace, the event will increase participation over last year by ten percent!
All of the students in attendance will have the opportunity to virtually rebuild Georgia's own Arabia Mountain High School. Arabia Mountain is one of only a few high schools that is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certified. The students will see the best in what construction, architecture, engineering and many other career areas have to offer. The Expo gives them the opportunity to find out how their current high school educational opportunities can prepare them for a great career in one of the fields. There will also be many entities participating, which will provide them with a plethora of ways to continue their training and education beyond high school.
We hope you were able to experience this year's Expo and SkillsUSA Championships, or at least have it on your radar for next year!
