CTAE State Update
February 18, 2011
Charles Banks, Accountability/Improvement cbanks@doe.k12.ga.us
CTAE Directors, please remember to review your grants on the Program Status screen of Consolidated Application to ensure that all the budgets show a status of "Approved." With the exception of the Perkins IV-Perkinsplus Grant and the Industry Certification Related Bond Grant which has only one sign-off on the Budget tab, all other grants should have two sign-offs (one on the Data Tab and the other on the Budget Tab). Grants are not approvable until both sides indicate "Superintendent Sign-off." The Data side of the grants should show either Superintendent sign-off or Program Manager Sign-off.
If any side of the grant shows:
1. "Program Manager Revisions Requested"- review the audit trail and make/save the revisions requested, then sign-off and notify your superintendent to sign-off. 2. "Superintendent Revision Requested" - review the audit trail and make/save the revisions your superintendent is requesting, then sign-off and notify him/her to sign-off. 3. "Coordinator Sign-off" - ensure that all revisions are accurately completed, and then ask the superintendent to sign-off. If you need to make revisions once the grant shows "coordinator sign-off," then you will need to have the superintendent reject the grant to allow you to make your additional revisions.

CTAE Equipment Grants Update Information
FY10 Construction-Related Equipment Grants (CREQ) The FY10 CREQ grants are closed. No further purchases or requisitions can be considered. If your system has received all the funds for which requisitions were approved, the system completion report should be submitted to the GaDOE via the GAORS system. Your financial office normally handles this. Also, a complete electronic inventory of the items approved for grant purchase should be sent to me on the form supplied to grant systems. If you need another copy of the form, please let Dr. Dennis Clarke know. Only include items purchased and reimbursed through the grant funds.
FY11 Construction-Related Equipment Grants Systems that received FY11 CREQ grants should be finalizing their purchases very soon. Please do not wait on this as there are audit stipulations regarding the percentage of funds spent from bond sources within a specified period of time. Remember that all grant eligible purchases must be pre-approved. Thanks for the great participation during the year. Please contact Dr. Clarke if you have any questions or if your eligibility status changed and the funds cannot be used this year.
Equipment Grants Administrative Update Meetings Coming this spring Dr. Clarke will be present for the several administrative regional update meetings scheduled for March 2011. If you have made an initial application for a FY12 CREQ grant, you will need to be present at one of those meetings and plan to stay for a brief meeting AFTER the close of the administrative update agenda. This is only for those who are applying for FY12 CREQ grants. If you miss the meeting, approval of your system grant application may be delayed. There will be more information at the meeting.
Please contact Dr. Dennis Clarke for equipment grant assistance or additional grant information at dclarke@doe.k12.ga.us or 404-805-5634.

Please note that in 2008 Basic Agricultural Science was listed as a fourth science. The following year, Basic Agricultural Science was removed from the approved list because of its lack of rigor. Therefore, the only students that may use the Basic Agricultural Science as their fourth science are this year's junior students, who will graduate in 2012. All other students must have a fourth science from the lists below. When advising students, please keep in mind some of the courses listed will count as a fourth science toward graduation but are not recognized by the Board of Regents.

CTSOs (Career Technical Student Organizations) Spring is upon us as we begin the culmination of competitive events during the State Conferences for each of the Career and Technical Student Organizations. All CTSOs are currently soliciting the assistance of educators and business professionals from across the state to support Georgia students by serving as a judge for one of competitive events. The success of our CTSO state conferences is dependent upon the service and commitment of our volunteers. The expertise and time commitment available from each person volunteering to judge can be matched to the appropriate event by the judging events coordinator of each CTSO. PLEASE, PLEASE, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please help communicate this need to all business and industry contacts you have. All local system administrators as well, are welcome to participate as judges in this year's events. Below is contact information for the CTSOs:

SkillsUSA Georgia
Dr. John Barge, State School Superintendent February 18, 2011 Page 8 of 12
Impossible.....Amazing......Incredible! These are just a few of the words uttered when SkillsUSA Georgia broke membership history this week. At exactly 9:30 a.m. on February 10, SkillsUSA Georgia's membership reached 7,570 members and growing! That broke the 1989-1990 school record of 7,146. This is truly the sign of great times ahead. Professional development, supportive school systems, dedicated teachers and engaged students have made this possible. Now is the best time to become involved in an organization that changes student's lives by fostering relationships with business and industry partners, creating relevance to their future careers and providing a rigorous classroom environment that will lead to credentials and certification that will follow them long after high school graduation.
Come see what it is all about by joining us at the State Leadership and Skills Conference, March 17-19, at the Georgia International Convention Center. There are seats still available for the VIP Luncheon on March 19 (10:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m.) when key industry leaders, education leaders and elected officials will come together to see the largest student centered Career Expo in Georgia along with the SkillsUSA Championships as its core. To claim your seat for the luncheon, contact Sonny Cannon at gcannon@doe.k12.ga.us.
Broadcast Video Production Congratulations to the Rockdale Career Academy's Broadcast Video Production (BVP) program for being the first BVP program in the state of Georgia to be industry certified! In fact, they may be the first BVP program to achieve industry certification in the country.
When the New Media Education Foundation of Georgia (NMEFGA) began looking across the country for an industry certification model for Georgia BVP programs, none could be found. So NMEFGA worked to create such a certification during the 2010 calendar year and five Georgia BVP programs received grants for industry certification in the spring of 2010. James Dinsmoor and many at the Rockdale Career Academy (RCA) worked hard in preparation to meet the certification criteria and that worked paid off January 10, when representatives of the video broadcast industry concluded in their evaluation that the RCA BVP program was indeed worthy of NMEFGA's industry certification distinction.
Congratulations James Dinsmoor and team at RCA (Rockdale Career Academy) your program, at all levels, impressed those seasoned industry professionals who were on site for the review. Evaluations made clear students enrolled in Rockdale Career Academy's Broadcast Video Production program were learning real-world skills directly applicable to entry level work in their field. The knowledge and skills reflected a strong foundation for pursuing future work at an institution of higher learning.
NMEFGA continues to make preparations for the CareerExpo and SkillsUSA Georgia events at the Georgia International Convention Center on March 17-18. This year the SkillsUSA LIVE streaming video production will expand from a four-hour production in 2010 to two days of live interviews of business representatives, students, policy makers and events under the roof of the 150,000 square foot convention center. There will even be a 15-minute Spanish language program every hour hosted by Mariela Romero of Univision/Atlanta 34. If you can't make the convention in person, catch the action of the two day event from the internet video stream that you can find on the SkillsUSA Georgia website.
Healthcare Science The first annual Your Future in Healthcare magazine will be distributed at the HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) State Leadership Conference and the GACTE Conference. The Georgia HOSA Foundation and the Georgia Healthcare Science Technology Education Foundation were instrumental in helping make this magazine possible. Featured are stories from professionals who work in healthcare, articles about great community service activities from our schools, and our HOSA state officers.
Dr. John Barge, State School Superintendent February 18, 2011 Page 9 of 12
If you need additional copies of the magazine (after March 5) please email Cyndi Waugh at cwaugh@doe.k12.ga.us. Please specify the quantity of magazines you need and include your complete school mailing address and contact person.
The HOSA State Leadership Conference is scheduled for March 3-5, at the Classic Center in Athens. We cordially invite you to attend the largest Georgia HOSA State Conference to date, with 2,300 students and advisors slated to attend (this is an increase of 400 over last year's attendance). The HOSA membership is at an all-time high as well with over 9,600 members and growing. For any questions about the conference, email Allen Seigler at Allen.Seigler@georgiahosa.org.
A regional conference is planned for April 22, at Columbus Technical College's brand new Health Sciences facility. The daylong conference will focus on competencies used in the Medical Services Pathway/General Medicine course. Information on the conference will be posted on the CTAE Resource Network soon.
Public Safety and Cosmetology Our Career EXPO and SkillsUSA State conference is March 17-19, at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. Cosmetology and Public Safety students will have their competitions at the convention center this year, and exhibits from business and industry will be included. We hope you will join us for this exciting event.
A regional conference will be held for public safety teachers at the State Bar of Georgia on Saturday, April 23. Details and registration can be found on the CTAE Resource Network.
Tentative plans are in the works for public safety and cosmetology to participate in Camp T&I in June.
CTI (Career Technical Instruction) CTI will host its State Leadership Conference on April 28-30, at the Rock Eagle 4H Center in Eatonton, Georgia. The highlight of the CTI State Leadership Conference is the competitive event session. We are in need of approximately 150 volunteer judges to fill 3-4 member panels per CTI event. If you are available to serve as a judge on the morning of Friday, April 29, or on the afternoon of Thursday, April 28, contact Sylvia Phillips at judges4education@yahoo.com or (678) 581-9092.
The SkillsUSA Region 8 Competition was held on February 4, at the Golden Isles Career Academy in Brunswick. CTI State Secretary Ashley Alicea placed 1st in the Region 8 Job Demonstration Open Event with her wedding bouquet design. She will further compete at the SkillsUSA State Competition in Atlanta on March 17-19. Ashley plans to pursue a career in floral design.
Turner County High School CTI students traveled to Valdosta on February 9, for a job shadowing and informational tour at Publix. Fourteen students attended this interactive tour. This proved to be a beneficial experience for the juniors and seniors, as they were able to observe and speak to many employees in a broad range of different positions. Students were taught to scan and bag grocery items as a cashier, make and bag popcorn in the deli, decorate a sugar cookie with piping bag icing in the bakery, and core a pineapple in the produce department. They also toured the seafood department, meat department, shipping department, business center, and break area. Publix treated the students to a hot lunch from the deli. Turner County High School CTI/Transition Coordinator, Allison Odom, teamed up with Georgia High School High Tech to coordinate this educational experience.
Dr. John Barge, State School Superintendent February 18, 2011 Page 10 of 12
CCAE (Coordinated Career Academic Education) The Pierce County High School CCAE students participated in a joint Leadership Conference with other CTSOs and student officers. Forty students from Pierce County High School in Blackshear took part in a challenge course program that was both physically and mentally demanding. The Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center provided a challenging setting in which to expand individual limits while supporting their personal boundaries. The goal was to bring out the leader within and turn the group into a successful and effective team. The CCAE Coordinator at PCHS is Tera Austin.
Business and Computer Science Many of our Business and Computer Science End of Pathway Assessments are national credentialing tests that are open to the public. With this said, teachers make take the assessments themselves (just like any citizen can) prior to the students. The assessments that are open are for the following pathways: 1. Administrative and Information Support
Microsoft - MOS: (any program) Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Published 2. Interactive Media (any of the three)
Adobe: Dreamweaver, Flash, Photo Shop CIW : Design Specialist Certification IC3: Internet and Computing Core Certification 3. Computer Networking CISCO: CCNA 4. Computer Systems and Support Comptia: A+

Thank you for your support in sending 367 educators to the GATFACS Winter Conference. Many valuable certificates were awarded to attendees including Better Brains for Babies, Fire Safety and ServSafe, and many other professional development workshops.
Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS) The long awaited Nutrition & Food Science CTAERN lesson plans and activities are in the process and will be available this summer at the GACTE Summer Conference. Culinary Arts Please refer to the memo sent from PSC/GaDOE regarding culinary certification for educators.
Any educators that have a Non-Renewable certificate in Culinary will be extended for one year upon the request of the employing school district. Educators who are currently teaching courses in the Culinary Arts pathway or plan to teach Culinary Arts courses, and do not hold a clear renewable Culinary Arts certificate, should file for a Non-Renewable certificate. This certificate will be issued for two years to allow time for completion of the requirements for Clear Renewable certification. The review for those educators that have taken previous coursework will be held on Friday, April 22, 2011. A confirmed location and further details will follow soon. Education The pilot for the end of pathway assessment for Teaching as a Profession has been completed and the assessment will be available on April 1. The Assessment Information Sheet for the exam will be sent to CTAE Administrators around the state in mid-March.
Marketing Education Thanks in large part to our Georgia Marketing Education Association (GMEA) Board, the Marketing Professional Development Conference that was held at the state-of-the-art Lanier Charter Career Academy's conferencing center on February 4, was a huge success! As always, our goal was to bring in business professionals whose presentations addressed our course standards and/or addressed issues raised by our AMA teams during our Industry Certification Reviews. All of the presenters' PowerPoint presentations, websites and resources were placed on the GMEA website for teachers' use in the classroom.
The Georgia DECA Career Development Conference will be held at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta on February 24-26. As always, we are eager to host your students from around the state! Since the DECA competitive events exactly align with the marketing curriculum standards, you can be assured that your students are getting a premier opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in high-level events.
Technology and Engineering The Georgia TSA (Technology Student Association) State Leadership and Competitive Event Conference will be held on March 10-11, at the Classic Center in Athens. We are in need of judges on Thursday, March 10, or Friday, March 11. If you can help judge, please contact Ron Barker at rbarker@doe.k12.ga.us or (404) 657-8316. Thanks for supporting your chapters! Reminders:
Teachers should watch for professional development opportunities in Engineering pathways through the CTAE Resource Network. Remind your teachers to apply for grant money through the CTAE Division.
