Lets focus more attention on our Perkins' Core Indicators and the improvement strategies:
Perkins IV Core Indicators of Performance 1S1 Academic Attainment Reading/Language Arts: Number of concentrators who have met Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) NCLB Standards in Reading/Language Arts on NCLB assessments and left secondary education in the reporting year. 1S2 Academic Attainment Mathematics: Number of concentrators who have met Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) NCLB standards in mathematics on NCLB assessments and have left secondary education 2S1 Technical Skill Attainment - Number of CTAE pathway completers who passed technical skill assessments that are aligned with industry-recognized standards in the reporting year. 3S1 Secondary School Diploma - Number of CTAE concentrators who earned a regular secondary school diploma in the reporting year. (Note: This will be a code of "C-College Preparatory, V-Vocational, or B-Both College Preparatory & Vocational" for Diploma type). 4S1 Student Graduation Rates - Number of CTAE concentrators who in the reporting year were included as graduated in the states computation of its graduation rate as described in Section 1111(b)(2)(C)(vi) of the ESEA. 5S1 Secondary Placement - The most current number of CTAE concentrators who left secondary education and were placed in a state of Georgia public postsecondary education system, advanced training, or entered the military or employment in the second quarter following the program year in which they left secondary education with either a dropout withdrawal code of (B, E, F, I S, U, L, M, O, P, Q), or a code of G-for graduation. 6S1 Nontraditional Participation - Number of CTAE participants from underrepresented gender groups who participated in the identified programs (see page 21) that lead to employment in nontraditional fields in the reporting year (duplicated counts, grades 9-12). 6S2 Nontraditional Completion - Number of CTAE concentrators from underrepresented gender groups who completed identified programs that lead to employment in nontraditional fields in the reporting year (unduplicated count 12th graders).

I would also request that additional attention be directed at embedding math, science, and communications-connected activities, i.e. tasks and projects, into the pathway courses. Hopefully, additional professional development activities related to project-based learning units will be available for your staff during the year.
I welcome the Counseling Program of GaDOE to our division, and I am excited about the future possibilities this addition will bring. The Counseling Unit will become an integral part of our CTAE activities.
Best wishes for a wonderful school year. Remember, we are here to support you, your students, and your programs, so please let us know if we can help. Our mission is to assist you in being successful! Feel free to forward this newsletter to all of your CTAE teachers and fellow staff members.

School Counselors/CTAE Update Contact: Jackie Melendez jmelende@doe.k12.ga.us Georgia School Counseling/School Social Work Programs and the Hospital Homebound Services are now located in the CTAE division of the Department of Education! The addition of School Counseling to the

CTAE division will provide new collaborative opportunities, as middle and high school counselors play such a critical part in our Georgia students individual graduation and career plans. More information regarding this endeavor and counselor participation will be forthcoming. Stay tuned!
Teachers-As-Advisors Workshops Contact: Vivian Snyder vsnyder@doe.k12.ga.us Four (4) one-day workshops will be conducted for system-level Teachers-As-Advisor teams during the month of September. System level teams should plan to register through the CTAE Resource Network. Each workshop is limited to 6 system-level teams. Registration on the CTAE Resource Network will open on September 1, 2010.
Workshop Locations and Dates September 22 & September 23, 2010, Alpharetta, North Fulton Instructional Technology Center September 27 & September 28, 2010, Macon, Central Georgia Technical College
GACTE DOE Exhibit Booth Instructional Materials Update Contact John Pritchett, jpritchett@doe.k12.ga.us Due to overwhelming response to the CTAE instructional resources at the 2010 GACTE Conference, all posters and resource ring cards were distributed and no more are remaining. Both the posters and the resource ring cards were created by our CTAE state staff and not the staff of GAcollege411.
However, John Pritchett is organizing a bulk order to support local systems in purchasing CTAE Posters or CTAE Resource Ring Cards. Pricing may be based on "pooling" local system orders to receive a reduced bulk order pricing. A bulk order of 2,000 resource ring cards is the starting point for additional orders. Resource ring cards are approximately $6.50 each, plus shipping. If your system plans to order 100 resource ring card sets, the cost would be approximately $650.00, plus shipping.
2010 GACTE Summer Conference Huge Success Contact: Skip Brown, rbrown@doe.k12.ga.us As the GACTE conference planning team met to discuss this years event, all members of the team felt that the conference was a huge success! STEM/CTAE Initiatives
Contact: Gilda Lyon, glyon@doe.k12.ga.us
Georgia CTAE is diving full force into the national STEM initiatives! STEM, a national acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, focuses on increasing the number of students preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related fields.
Since CTAEs prime directive is to create a world-class workforce for Georgia in the 21st Century, the STEM initiatives are a natural fit. The Georgia Department of Education is focusing on the following STEM activities and projects:
CTAE/STEM Title II ARRA grants- Awarded to 26 Georgia schools to become model STEM lab schools CTAE/STEM Integration Workshops-Six (6) sites across Georgia in Sept. and Oct. 2010, to develop integrated
project/problem-based learning units that will be accessible online for statewide use by CTAE/STEM teachers

Increased focus on STEM competition for students (robotics, science fairs, health science related competitions, computer animation, web site design, biotechnology, etc).

CTAE is striving to be at the forefront of the STEM movement with courses that align to science, engineering, and technology already in place. The GaDOE is committed to increasing the number of project/problem-based learning opportunities for our students, as evidenced through the CTAE/STEM Integration workshops planned around the state. Additional information about competitions, science & engineering fair opportunities, and other ways to involve students in STEM activities will be coming soon.

Education Career Partnership and Dual Enrollment Update Contact: Gary Mealer, gmealer@doe.k12.ga.us
Dual Enrollment Update Clarification of dual enrollment versus joint enrollment definitions:

I. Dual Enrollment credit may NOT be earned during the summer. Here is the information directly out of the 2010-2011 ACCEL Guidelines:

1. The ACCEL Program is available to students for the standard school terms of fall, and spring semesters or fall, winter, and spring quarters.

2. ACCEL funds are not available for summer terms.
II. Joint enrollment is for college credit only and cannot be used for high school credit. Joint enrollment and Learning Support classes are ineligible for payment through ACCEL funding at a Board of Regents college/university, but both can be paid for at a technical college through the HOPE Grant. However, the hours that are paid through HOPE will count toward the HOPE cap.

Georgia Work Ready Month Activities in October Contact: Gary Mealer, gmealer@doe.k12.ga.us
During October, Georgias High School Seniors will again participate in Georgias Work Ready Month Activities! Last year, 110 high schools participated in Work Ready Month activities, including over 10,000 12th Georgia students. During 2010-2011, ECP representatives and local Georgia high schools will be working in partnership with local technical colleges and Work Force Development area representatives to provide this opportunity to all 12th grade students. Students will be provided with Georgias Work Ready

information, free gifts, and the opportunity to earn a Work Ready Certificate. This certificate verifies to potential employees the students skill level and work habits. Over 300 Georgia companies have embraced Work Ready Certificates as extremely important when looking for potential job candidates.
Please note that high schools will be contacted by a High School Coordinator from a Technical College or a Work Ready Area Representative regarding Work Ready Month activities and assessment dates. In addition, a Work Ready Assessment tool kit of information will be provided to each school to promote Work Ready activities. The Georgia Work Ready toolkit includes useful documents, including parent information letters, teacher informative email templates, and informative power points templates.
Charles Banks, Accountability/Improvement (cbanks@doe.k12.ga.us)
The Accountability Team would like to say WELCOME to another, soon to be, great year! This year will require even more frugal spending than ever. The Accountability Team has resolved not to let this financial crisis interfere with the services we provide to you and to the students you serve in Georgia.
We are working to review and approve your local grants as quickly and as accurately as possible. Please remember to complete your budget information and sign-off on each grant that you applied for before 12:00 a.m. September 30, 2010. Continuing budget constraints will not allow us to extend the availability of any grants (incomplete applications or grants not signed-off by superintendent) beyond this date. These challenging financial times will require us to seek creative ways to fund those programs we are accustomed to providing. However, we cannot allow our creativity to result in audit problems with supplanting of Federal Funds. Auditors are aware of the challenges we face and this could become the focus of their attention.
We are available to assist with the mounting problems this economy is bringing on you and your staff.
Construction-Related Equipment (CREQ) Grants FY11 information explaining this grant is located in the FY11 CREQ Notebook which can be found at the following web page: gadoe.org/ci_cta.aspx?PageReq=CICTAEquipment. Select the file in the top blue box on the right side of the page.
Funds allocations for those systems that were initially approved for FY11 CREQ grants have been included within their Consolidated Applications. However, coordinators must be sure that all Program Information is correct (and included), a copy of the CREQ grant agreement is uploaded into the grant application and that both the coordinator and the superintendent have signed off on both sides (Program Information and Budget) of the grant application. Grant applications that are incomplete will not be approved until corrected.
Important reminder: All proposed equipment purchases must be pre-approved by the grants manager. You should familiarize yourself and others involved in the purchasing process with the purchasing procedures that are included with your grant agreement document. You can send the following information via email for equipment purchase approval: Name of the item; Vendors name; Vendors item number; how many do you want to purchase; the cost of each item; and the web site where the item can be found if needed.
Reminder: Each program lab that is funded with CREQ grant funds must be full-time with a full-time, infield instructor in the specific program, and the lab construction or modifications must have been approved and completed.

FY10 CREQ grant recipients will be receiving an email note with an inventory form that will need to be completed and returned. This concerns all purchases made with FY10 CREQ grant funds and information will be included in a state database. The inventory form must be used and no other inventory lists can be accepted. Submission of the inventory form and a completion report being filed by the system finalizes the grant purchase year.

OCR Compliance Reviews The five systems that are participating in FY11 OCR Compliance Reviews have been notified and provided all relevant information concerning the review process and documents which will need to be prepared. Participating system coordinators should review those materials and contact me with questions. Additional compliance review information will be sent to participating systems soon.

Industry Certification Equipment Bond Those systems that have an Industry Certification Equipment Bond grant have been notified and provided a grant agreement. Make sure that a copy of the grant agreement is included in your Consolidated Application under the IC Bond grant name and that your budget detail is completed. Also, this grant requires sign offs by the coordinator and the superintendent on both sides of the grant application in the Consolidated Application. These funds are only for large, essential instructional equipment and pre-approval is required before purchases are made.

If you have questions, please contact Dennis Clarke at dclarke@doe.k12.ga.us or 404-805-5634 (work number).

FY2011 CTAE New Leaders' Academy - "Save the Dates" The GaDOE Division of Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) and the CTAE Resource Network are sponsoring a newly designed FY2011 CTAE Leadership Academy that is open to all new CTAE leadership personnel, at the district level and the school level, within Georgias school systems. Throughout FY 2011, the leadership academy activities will include technical assistance at the local level as well as additional training sessions to be offered within the north, south and central CTAE regions. The academy is designed to assure a personalized learning plan for each new CTAE leader, whether serving at the system or school level.

A goal of the New Leader's Academy is to enhance your skills in providing leadership to ensure we have quality CTAE programs and Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs). To assist you in meeting this goal, you are required to serve as a team member on one Perkins Compliance Review for a school system, and serve as a judge for a regional or state CTSO competitive event.

Many of you have asked about the possibility of budget cuts and you are aware of the 4% reduction mandate from the Governors office. There have also been many systems that have made changes since the application process back in April. Our goal is to have new AG budget templates to each of you by Friday, September 3, 2010. You should be getting these updated sheets from your AG region coordinator. If for any reason you have not received this information by Friday, September 3, please contact the coordinator or email me at jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us.
As we begin a new school year I would like to express my thanks to each of you that help make our students a success. Without your support and leadership, we would not be able to share the following great news about some recent accomplishments in FFA. For those schools listed below that have achieved state and

national recognition I extend a well deserved CONGRATULATIONS. I encourage each of you to work with your agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor to promote success in these endeavors.
Best Wishes to each of you for another successful school year.
FFA Update The Georgia FFA Association ended the 2009-2010 school year with a record high 30,153 FFA members. Georgia is the 3rd largest state association in the nation and this marks the 12th consecutive year that FFA membership in Georgia has increased.
The Georgia FFA Association had a tremendous year of summer leadership activities. Twenty-five local FFA chapters attended the 2010 Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) conference July 20-22. Chapter officers learned the value of serving as leaders in their chapter and their community. Chapters worked to complete their Program of Activities as a roadmap of goals, and plan of action for the coming school year.
Forty-eight FFA members and advisors attended the FFAs premier national leadership conference, the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) in our nations capitol on June 21-27. The FFA members attended received service-based leadership training, completed a service learning project, visited their Representatives and Senators on Capitol Hill, and saw the historical monuments around Washington D.C.
The 83rd National FFA Convention will be held October 20-23, in Indianapolis. More than 50,000 FFA members and advisors from across the nation will attend. Georgia FFA will be represented by 19 career development event participants, 19 Agriscience Fair entries, 12 national proficiency finalists, an American Star finalist and national officer candidate. Fifteen chapters from Georgia will receive a national 3-Star ranking, the highest ranking available in the National Chapter Award program. Georgia also has 45 students receiving the prestigious American FFA Degree, the highest degree available for active FFA members. A complete list of Georgia FFA competitors is listed below.
