Gary Steppe, State Director (gsteppe@doe.k12.ga.us)
As this school year closes, we are already looking forward to an exciting 2010-2011 year! More of our CTAE pathway completers are now becoming credentialed in their field through CTAE national third-party assessments.
Accountability is such an important word for all of us, as we work toward providing evidence through data that our CTAE students are prepared for both college and work.
Thank you for all that you do for CTAE and our students. Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing each of you at the GACTE summer conference.

Work-Based Learning Update Summer workshops for Work-Based Learning coordinators are now posted on the CTAE Resource Network at the website. The two-hour (2) PLU workshops are designed to assist new Work-Based Learning Coordinators and new Youth Apprenticeship Coordinators in the operation of a Work-Based Learning Program. New Youth Apprenticeship Coordinators should attend this training to satisfy grant requirements.

NOTE: This is not a Work-Based Learning 80-hour endorsement program.
These summer workshops will focus on the 24 Work-Based Learning standards published in the GaDOE CareerRelated Education Manual located on the GaDOE website. Participants will receive information regarding funding and specific requirements of the Youth Apprenticeship Program grant. In addition, participants will receive materials, resources, necessary forms and training on use of the on-line database C-NET.

HIGH SCHOOLS THAT WORK (HSTW) & JROTC Update The HSTW Summer Staff Development is just around the corner. Attendance at this conference will assist in jumpstarting your HSTW initiative and provide over 500 sessions that will assist the school in raising student achievement. The conference will be held in Louisville, Kentucky on July 14-17, 2010. Additional information and registration may be accessed at www.SREB.org.
HSTW Assessment We are proud to announce that 568 students from 63 high schools received the HSTW Award of Educational Achievement. To earn the award, students must complete a college-preparatory course of study in at least two of three subject areas (English/language arts, mathematics and/or science); complete a concentration in a career/technical area, mathematics/science or the humanities; and meet the readiness goals in all three subject areas on the assessment. These schools have been notified of the students that received the award. Congratulations to the instructors and the students for this accomplishment. There were eight HSTW sites that had 20 or more student recipients of the award. Special congratulations to Savannah Arts Academy for having 57 of 60 students receive the award. HSTW sites will receive the complete results in late August or early September.
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Recently, there has been a change to the JROTC programs of study. Since all JROTC courses are stand alone course, any three satisfactorily completed courses satisfy the completer requirement. In other words, there is not a recommended sequence of courses that must be taken in order to be a pathway completer. JROTC pathways may be accessed at the DOE website under CTAE and JROTC.
GACTE Summer Conference JROTC instructors are reminded that your attendance at GACTE is needed and appreciated. This is an excellent opportunity to network with fellow JROTC instructors. GACTE will be July 18-21, 2010 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta. Conference information and registration may be accessed at www.GACTE.org. Your advisory committee has put together a super staff development for you so plan to attend. The national leadership will once again be in attendance.
End-of-Pathway Spring Testing Currently Underway The CTAE Division would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all 23 local systems that accepted the challenge to participate in end-of-pathway testing activities this spring. Approximately 600 students in five different pathways will take a national credentialing exam in 34 high schools by May 31st. We applaud your efforts in ensuring that your students are equipped with the necessary credentials to be successful in a 21st century workforce.

We look forward to sharing more detailed information regarding identified national credentials and the end-of-pathway testing process at the July 2010 GACTE Summer In-Service. For additional information regarding CTAE Assessment, please contact Ms. Mamie Hanson at (404) 657-6279 or by email at mhanson@doe.k12.ga.us.
Report from the April 2010 Counselor Workshops Career, Technical and Agricultural Education, along with Jackie Melendez from GaDOE Learning Support, completed six counselor workshops in April entitled, "Supporting COUNSELORS with Their Work." Evaluations from the workshops were very favorable. Therefore, plans are to continue with another series of workshops in the fall and spring to run concurrently with the CTAE Supervisor fall drive-ins. Please plan to bring a counselor from your system to attend these workshops. Check the CTAE Resource Network for times and places this fall.
Charles Banks, Accountability/Improvement (cbanks@doe.k12.ga.us)
Consolidated Application (Con App) Updates CTAE Directors, as we enter the final phase of the Consolidated Application process, we encourage you to be diligent in completing all your grant applications and the sign-off process before the close date of May 17, 2010. Remember that the application process is not considered complete until both the coordinator and superintendent sign-off. Please remind your superintendent of this protocol to ensure that your system does not lose any funds due to an incomplete application on May 17.
We suggest that you focus on completing the Program Improvement Grant first, since this is the largest grant application in the Con App.
General reminders regarding this grant include: 1. Core Indicators/Performance Measures form a. Adding strategies to address each core Indicator (1S1-6S2). b. Allocating a portion of your Perkins IV funds to address each Indicator whether or not you met or need to improve the Core Indicators. 2. Improvement and Funding Strategies form a. Ensure that all Core Indicators 1S1-6S2 are included on this form. 3. LEA Career Pathway form a. If your system listed a pathway as new in FY10 and the pathway still exist, you will have to delete the FY10 entry that displays as "New" and then add the pathway as "Existing" in FY11. 4. Local Maintenance of Effort form a. If you elected to use the "Import Prior Year Data" option, you will have to update the Local Approved Funds by Object Code section on the form before the "FY2011 FTE/Local Budget for Career, Technical and Agricultural Education" amount will change. b. You will also need to update the Program Improvement, Education and Career Partnership, and Professional Development sections of the form with the FY2011 allocations as well. 5. Accountability and Evaluation Form a. Click on the Bold (B) icon before you start typing in a text box, and save after entering data in each text box. b. If you are copying data from Word etc, use the "Paste html" option to paste the data in the text box. 6. Using the "Import Prior Year Data" button- On all grants where this option exists, please activate this feature before entering any additional data. Using this feature after adding data will result in the loss of the data that was added.
Remember! Please contact us immediately regarding any technical difficulties that you may experience while completing a form.

Scott Carey, Program Delivery (scarey@doe.k12.ga.us)
I would like to thank each of you for your outstanding work and dedication in helping to promote and carry CTAE to the next level. You are the most important link in creating our future leaders as we continue to grow our programs and reach out to more and more students.
Summertime is the perfect time for teachers to take those professional development courses they didn't have time for during the school year. Encourage your teachers to participate in the summer workshops. Our team has worked hard to design useful activities for their areas.
As the national CTSO conferences approach, I would like to wish the best of luck to all our student competitors.
Have a happy and safe summer.
Special Populations (Virginia Turner at vturner@doe.k12.ga.us)
New Teachers Training The Special Populations new teachers training will begin on July 6, for those seeking to become certified in Coordinated Career Academic Education (CCAE), Project Success, and Career Technical Instruction (CTI). The classes will be held at the Macon State College campus through the Educational Technology Center (ETC). Registration and information is posted on the CTAE Resource Network.
Career Technical Instruction (CTI) Georgia CTI hosted over 700 students and teachers combined at the 29th Annual State Leadership Conference that was held at the new Macon Marriott City Center. Students from across the state traveled to Macon hoping to be the next state winner. The 2009-2010 Georgia CTI State Officers served as our student leaders throughout the conference. Each day was packed with fun and educational events. Our keynote speaker Mr. Keith Brown, Motivator of the Millennium, gave an inspiring message titled "It's Not Impossible - But I'm Possible." After the competition, the Georgia State Fair hosted Georgia CTI at the Central City Park in Macon. It was three days that the students will never forget.
CCAE and Project Success Teachers Celebrates 40 Years of State Leadership Conferences Students and teachers celebrated 40 years of State Leadership Conferences on April 8-10, in Jekyll Island. The conference was a salute to the past with former Program Specialist Naomi Dorsey and Program Specialist Assistant Danny Fleming in attendance. A video of the past 40 years, "Wow, How Times Have Changed," and a memorabilia table enabled all to see the progress and successes accomplished during the era.
During the Opening General Session, the crowd was entertained by husband and wife team Anthony and Jennifer Beckham. The Beckhams are part of Power Unlimited and bring a strong message of perseverance while performing feats of strength.
Over the past 40 years of operations, CCAE/PS has produced countless officers, competition winners, community leaders, and graduates. We have carried out our mission of helping every student reach their full potential.
