High Schools That Work Summer Conference

Gary Steppe, State Director
(gsteppe@doe.k12.ga.us)
We are winding down another school year, one that from all indications has been very successful for CTAE. In order for students to continue on their path to becoming pathway completers, CTAE directors and teachers need to be pro-active to ensure that students are selecting appropriate courses that lead to pathway completion. We would like to suggest that someone from each local system CTAE department monitor and track pathway completion by reviewing CTAE students' course selections. The monitoring and keeping track of CTAE students' progress is a very important key indicator for technical skill attainment.

Professional Learning Update

Testing season for our students is now in progress across the state. Please do all you can to help your school in improving student performance on these tests, as performance measures for the Perkins Core Indicators are pulled from the AYP data.

Consolidated Application (Con App) Updates
CPI Report On or about March 25-26, 2010, each system received an Excel version of their CPI report. We requested that the CTAE director review the report, and if necessary, indicate on the report any corrections that were made. After this, the Excel file with/without corrections should be uploaded to the FY11 Program Improvement Grant.

Since sending this CPI file, we have received calls from systems indicating that some of their teachers did not appear on the Excel file they received. To resolve this problem, we are requesting that each CTAE director ask their CPI data person to print a copy of the most current CPI report- CP011B & CP011A (aka 11A & 11B Report), and review it to ensure that all teachers are listed and coded correctly. If there are any corrections, type/write these on the CP011B report, and upload them (upload the CP011A & CP011B, instead of the Excel worksheet) to the FY11 Program Improvement Grant.

FCCLA Grant Application Systems should have received a copy of the FCCLA application via email. Those systems wishing to apply for this grant must complete the application and upload it to the FCCLA grant application in the Consolidated Application (Con App) as well as agree to the Overview form prior to signing-off on the grant.
Spring Technical Assistance Workshops It is imperative that all CTAE directors register and attend at least one of the Spring Technical Assistance Workshops being held between April 1st and April 29, 2010. Please go to www.ctaern.org to register. If a workshop is closed or all seats are filled, contact your regional coordinator and still make arrangements to attend. There are several topics that will be covered during these workshops and important documentation will be distributed. No arrangements will be made to forward these documents to systems that do not attend a workshop. Please note that by attending a workshop, systems will be meeting one of the requirements on the CTAE Supervision Grant-LEA Professional Learning Point System form.
Current Con App Issues/Reporting Technical Issues The following technical issues have been reported to us:
"Import Data" feature is not working on the Improvement and Funding Strategies form FY11 Capital Equipment applications that systems completed last fiscal year (FY10) are not rolling the data forward into the current FY11 application
We are working with the IT Department to have these issues resolved in timely manner and will notify systems as these issues have been fixed.
As a reminder, the Core Indicator data has not been populated on the Core Indicator/Performance Measures form as yet. This information has been forwarded to IT and we are expecting this data to show up in the Con App shortly.
Please remember that if you have having any difficulty in completing a grant application in the Con App, contact your Regional Coordinator or call Georgia Grossett-Dale @ 404-463-0525, to assist you in resolving the problem. Do not call the Help Desk, as they may not be able to assist you and this will only delay resolution to the problem.
Construction-Related Equipment Grants (CREQ)
2009-2010 (FY10) Construction-Related Equipment Grants This is just a reminder that all CREQ grant purchases for FY10 grants must be completed by October 31, 2010. No purchases dated past this date will be accepted. In addition, system requisitions for reimbursements must be submitted via the GAORS accounting system by December 15, 2010. Late submissions will not be accepted. If you did not open a program lab as originally planned, the funds approved for that program cannot be spent and a letter from your system superintendent should be sent via lplan@doe.k12.ga.us to Mr. Gary Steppe, CTAE Director, to verify that the funds are not being used.
2010-2011 (FY11) Construction-Related Equipment Grants If you made an initial application last year (by May 15, 2009 in your consolidated application) for a FY11 CREQ grant(s), the information should "roll over" into your FY11 Consolidated Application information. Please check this and notify me or Georgia Grossett-Dale if you do not see that information in your FY11 data. If you did apply for a CREQ grant but know that you will not be requesting the funding for any reason, please have your system superintendent send a note via lplan@doe.k12.ga.us to Mr. Gary Steppe, CTAE Director, so that funding adjustments can be made. We will not know the status of FY11 CREQ grants funding until the budget is signed by the governor. One major change in the procedures for the FY11 CREQ grant process is that ALL equipment purchases must be pre-approved. You will get more information about this during the technical assistance meetings. Also, the FY11 CREQ Grants Handbook is already posted on the GaDOE CTAE website.
OCR Compliance Reviews for FY10 This is just a reminder for those systems that participated in FY11 OCR Compliance Reviews. Once you have evidence of completed "directives" or "violations" from your on-site review, please send that to Dr. Dennis Clarke via lplan@doe.k12.ga.us as soon as possible. Dr. Clarke will check the documentation and make the appropriate completion (of each respective item) notation.

OCR Compliance Reviews for FY11 We are currently working on the list of systems that will be subject to an on-site OCR Compliance Review during the coming year. It is our hope to be able to notify the selected systems by the Spring Technical Assistance Meetings. An OCR Compliance Review Handbook is currently available on the GaDOE CTAE website if you need more information.

High Schools That Work (HSTW) Summer Conference Contact: Stan McCallar smccalla@doe.k12.ga.us

The 24th Annual High Schools That Work Staff Development Conference will be held on July 14-17, 2010, at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The theme for this year's conference is "Designing Schools for the Future: Improved Achievement and Graduation Rates" and approximately 500 sessions will address the theme.

Attending the conference will allow you to bring back valuable information to assist their schools with improving student achievement and raising graduation rates. On-line registration is now available, and may be found on the SREB web page at the following address: http://register.sreb.org/summerconference/. For additional information regarding the summer conference you may go to Summer Conference Webpage.

Schools that have HSTW grant funds remaining for 2009-10 may use them to register for the conference. However, travel expenses may not be paid in advance.

HSTW Staff Development Conference Proposal to Present HSTW is now accepting presenter proposals from schools, teams, or individuals to present at this year's summer conference in Kentucky. Many of you have best practices in your schools that should be shared with the nation, so plan to take this opportunity! Please submit an on-line proposal at Summer Conference Webpage. Just click on "Submit a Proposal," then complete and submit.

HSTW 2010-11 Grant Just a reminder: the HSTW grant is now a part of the consolidated application. You will find an extended grant application under the Local Plan section of the GaDOE website. This extended grant application that should be completed and submitted to "LPlan" and Kimi Ivey at kivey@doe.k12.ga.us. The cover page of the grant should also be uploaded.

Note that this year's HSTW grant gives systems/schools the option of three initiatives to select for implementation: (1) Teachers As Advisors (TAA), (2) the Senior Project, and (3) Literacy Across the Curriculum. A fourth option is available for new HSTW sites only: (4) Implementation of the Teachers As Advisors (TAA) program.

JROTC Instructors are highly encouraged to attend the GACTE Summer Conference on July 18-21, 2010. This will be your opportunity to network with others from across the state and attend the JROTC affiliate sessions and general sessions during the conference.
The luncheon speaker will be Dr. Donna Rice from the Army JROTC command. Dr. Rice has been very supportive of JROTC in Georgia. Instructor awards will be a part of the luncheon, as well as the GACTE awards. If instructors have not joined GACTE, please check out the application on www.GACTE.org. Notice that the category "ROTC" is now listed on the application for use by JROTC instructors. We look forward to seeing you in July at the conference.
HSTW GaDOE Annual Report You will soon receive the HSTW GaDOE Annual Report. When completed, return to smccalla@doe.k12.ga.us. This report is important because it helps schools to reflect on the year's accomplishments, assist in determining any gaps that exist, and assist in planning professional development for the coming school year.
Scott Carey, Program Delivery (scarey@doe.k12.ga.us)
As we come to the final stretch of the school year, please make sure you review your strong programs and apply for Industry Certification grants for next fiscal year. If you have an outstanding Broadcast Video program you will have the opportunity to apply for Industry Certification that is new.
Don't forget to encourage your teachers to sign up for the professional development courses that are being updated daily on the CTAERN.
Program of Work The FY11 Program of Work (POW) is live and teachers have begun completing the form. When reviewing the FY10 annual report for granting the FY11 POW for teachers, remember to use the membership report and participation chart as resources. The membership report (as of April 1) will be posted on www.gactso.org by April 20. The organizational participation charts will be emailed thru CTAERN to administrators as soon as they are available.
Career and Technical Instruction The Career and Technical Instruction (CTI) program is anticipating the celebration of its 29th State Leadership Conference at the Macon Marriott Centreplex on April 29 - May 1. The keynote speaker Mr. Keith Brown is a published author whose leadership guide for youth and young adults is winning rave reviews nationally. Mr. Brown will reveal how to adopt a positive attitude to help get ahead in life, share a secret method of creating goals, and discuss techniques that can be used to ensure a successful student/mentor match.
CTI will host its first VIP Tour with the assistance of the Macon Convention and Visitors Bureau. With over 650 expected in attendance, the CTI coordinators are in a whirlwind of excitement as they work with students to share their prepared projects and presentations for an opportunity to be first on stage to receive their award.
