Upcoming Counselor Workshops
Dual Enrollment Update
Gary Steppe, State Director
(gsteppe@doe.k12.ga.us)
As we enter the home stretch of another school year, it is good for each of us to take time to remember the three R's Reflect, Review and Reinforce the new skills and knowledge our students have gained. Review those with students and fill in any gaps that are discovered. Remember, learning is specific to individual students. Be sure to give students the opportunity to reinforce what they have learned so they can gain confidence.
We would like to solicit your help in making sure that your counselors and principals in your schools are taking advantage of the upcoming regional April Counselor/Principal Workshop. Two workshops will be held in each of the regions, North, Central, and South. For more information, please check out the "Upcoming Counselor Workshops" article below in the Development and Transition section.
Professional Learning Update
Agricultural Education
On another note, two of the hottest things coming out of the U.S. Department of Education are their desire to develop true Programs of Study in every state. A Program of Study would be horizontally aligned at every high school. A high school student who chose nursing as a career choice would have the best selection of courses in the Health Services Pathway in their Program of Study and also have the academic courses that would best prepare that student for a career in nursing. This horizontal alignment would have to take place in every high school centered around their course offerings. The Program of Study would also include a vertical alignment that would include regional Technical Colleges and Universities that offer advanced post-secondary training in their career choice.

Another hot topic is quality STEM program development. Science, technology, engineering and math programs across all CTAE Pathways. CTAE teachers and leaders need to be at the table when these STEM discussions take place.
Everyone is doing a great job around the state. Don't let the students' spring fever get the upper hand. Finish the year strong!

As the year winds down, we appreciate your continued support of our curricular programs and initiatives! I know you will want to join me in wishing Ann Hatchell, our High School Curriculum Coordinator, "Good Luck and Best Wishes!" as she retires from education and takes on a new role working for the Professional Standards Commission. On behalf of all of us in CTAE, we will truly miss Ann and her dedicated efforts toward CTAE curricula and standards!

Copy of MOWR Law.PDF
Excerpt from MOWR Law: "No later than the first day of April each year, each local school system shall provide general information about the program, including such forms, to all its tenth and eleventh grade students. A local school system shall also provide counseling services in accordance with the counseling guidelines provided by the department to such students and their parents or guardians before the students enroll in the program."
John (Chip) Bridges, Agricultural Education (jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us)
Things are going good for agricultural education and we are excited about many great opportunities to work with you in the future to insure success for the students and teachers in your agricultural education program. Here are just a few details about upcoming events or activities that you may want to take note:
The agricultural education program will conduct a performance evaluation for every agriculture teacher receiving state grants. These performance evaluations should be completed by April 15, 2010, and I look forward to sharing the great results with you on how well our agriculture teachers across the state are doing in regard to accountability.
Many of you have asked about the procedure for obtaining the state AG Extended Day/Year grants for FY11; so here is a brief summary of what needs to happen.
Please return the FY2011 Short Budget Planning Sheet for AG-ED to the AG Region Office(s) by April 1, 2010. This will help as we plan for the appropriations of this state grant. You should have received the attached form in an e-mail, but just in case here it is again. The contact information can be found on this attachment as well.
FY 2011 Agricultural Education Budget Request Worksheet.xls
Agriculture Teachers will need to complete the FY2011 Program of Work by May 1st, which is located on the Georgia Agricultural Education web site.
By May 7, 2010 you will receive a copy of the AG Budget Template from the AG-ED region office(s) that will need to be uploaded to the consolidated application. The AG Local Plan is built into the ConApp this year so you will not have to upload a separate local plan (only the budget worksheet will need to be uploaded).
I would like to invite each of you to attend the State FFA Convention which will be held in Macon, Georgia on April 22, 23, & 24, 2010. This would be a great visit for those of you considering adding agricultural education and FFA at your school. It would also be a great opportunity for any school administrator to support their local FFA students. The following link should provide more details to help you consider this invitation.

I hope to see you there!!!
