CTAE State Update
November 2010
Emily Spann - Development and Transition espann@doe.k12.ga.us
Many thanks to all of you who took the time to verify the names, schools, and email addresses of the middle and high school counselors in your systems! We appreciate your support and assistance in obtaining an accurate and up-to-date list of counselors.
As noted in a recent email that was sent to CTAE Directors, November 19 (today) is the deadline for verification of both the high school and middle school counselor information. If you have not yet responded with counselor verification, please do so as soon as possible.
Currently, we have received approximately 95% verification of all high school counselors, but we are only at 75% verification of middle school counselors. Thirty-seven school systems have not yet responded with middle school counselor information.
Please help us ensure that a middle and high school counselors is available right now, so that critical communication regarding BRIDGE legislation, dual enrollment, etc. may be provided.
Feedback Needed on Proposed CTAE High School Courses We would like to request your help to review and provide feedback on the five (5) proposed CTAE courses. Please take a few moments to read the Maritime Studies pathway and the Application of Firefighting course drafts for the Georgia Performance Standards website at: https://www.georgiastandards.org/standards/Pages/Proposed-New-GPS.aspx.
The deadline for your feedback is Tuesday, December 14. Please contact Jan Wyche, CTAE High School Curriculum Coordinator, at (404) 463-0299 or jwyche@doe.k12.ga.us with any questions or concerns.

Guidance and Counseling Update With the recent BRIDGE legislation (HB 400) requiring students in middle and high school to receive advisement and counseling, a review of the Georgia Department of Education's Guidance Counselor Board Rule, 160-4-8-.05, is important. The rule describes the basic duties and responsibilities of school counselors as well as a description of the appropriate and inappropriate uses of counselors as defined by the American School Counselor's Association. The mission of school counselors is to focus on enhancing the learning process for all students.
A Guidance and Counseling Activity Log is designed for school counselors to use as a source of data collection and assessment of their guidance and counseling programs. This is a suggested timeline structure, which has been adapted from the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program, and can be used to help middle and high school counselors comply with BRIDGE guidelines. The time log may be used to analyze the distribution of the counselor's time and the various tasks the counselor is performing. The log is also useful to determine where more educational support may be needed to comply with BRIDGE. Please remember that these are only recommended time allocations.

Certificates of Participation for the Teacher Drive-In Meetings Teachers who registered on the CTAERN for the fall teacher drive-in meetings so far have not been able to print their certificate of attendance. This is because we had to wait until all the meetings were concluded to check off the attendees.
Now that the last fall teacher drive-in meeting in Savannah has occurred, we are currently validating attendance using the sign-in sheets from the drive-in breakout meetings.
Once this process is complete, teachers will be able to sign in and obtain their certificate of participation. We plan to have this process completed during the month of December. Please pass the word on to all teacher affected by this.
Save the Date The CTSO Legislative Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, February 15, at the Depot. The directors and state officers of each CTSO in partnership with GACTE will be organizing and conducting the program for the event. All legislators along with other dignitaries will be invited. Each CTSO will also be inviting selected local chapter members to participate. Details will be forthcoming.

GATFACS Winter Conference The Georgia Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, Culinary Arts and Education Teachers (GATFACS) will host their annual Winter In-service Conference February 3-5, 2011 at the Marietta Hilton. Please register teachers NOW for the early bird discount. Contact Laura Ergle for more details at lergle@doe.k12.ga.us.
Healthcare, Public Safety, and Personal Care Services The HSTEA/TIEGA winter conference will be Jan. 28-29th in Statesboro, GA. Registration forms can be found at www.hstea.org (for healthcare teachers) and at www.tiega.org (for public safety, cosmetology, and other T&I teachers). The registration form and fee should be sent to the address listed on the appropriate form (registration for this conference will not be through CTAERN.) We are excited about this conference and hope everyone will be able to attend.
An American Heart Association CPR instructor course (one of the regional offerings on Jan. 27 and 28th) will be offered prior to the conference. For the CPR course, please sign up through www.ctaern.org. This course should not cost the instructor anything (we suggest borrowing the manuals since new material will be coming out in July), but the course will be cancelled if 12 people do not sign up.
