Gary Steppe, State Director (gsteppe@doe.k12.ga.us)
It was wonderful meeting many of you at the annual GACTE Conference in July. There are truly some great things going on around this state in CTAE and I appreciate everyone's efforts. All of us in the CTAE family need to be mindful of a couple of things that are going to become increasingly important over the next few years. As budgets are tightening, the funding we have enjoyed will be monitored much more closely. Our results will be evaluated and it will be our responsibility to show we are achieving desirable outcomes with our students. Just so you will know where our efforts should be placed, allow me to identify some of those positive outcomes:
We will need to show substantial growth: in the number of pathway completers, in the number of industry certified programs, in the number of students receiving state and national credentials, and in the number of our students that go into the field of work or higher education in the area of their high school pathway.
As we being this new school year, I hope everyone will focus on growing these outcomes.
It is with pleasure that I announce Mr. John (Chip) Bridges as the new Program Manager for Agricultural Education. Chip brings 20 years of Ag experience to the position and will be assuming his new duties effective September 1. His email address will stay the same (jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us) but his new telephone number will be 404.657.8312. Please join us in wishing Chip the very best.
Have a great school year! Please feel free to call on us any time we can be of assistance.

ECP Newsletter Information - Education Career Partnership (ECP) Elluminate webinar sessions are scheduled on the third (3rd) Wednesday each month from 9:30-10:30 a.m. These sessions will be aimed at sharing updated information, providing data reporting information, and sharing proven ECP Best Practices. The webinars are open to any CTAE teacher, administrator or educator. The August Elluminate webinar, held on August 19, 2009, was entitled: "ECP--What is it All About?" and provided information for educators who were unable to attend the ECP sessions at the GACTE 2009 conference in July.

The National Career Partnership Network (NCPN) national conference will be held in Atlanta, from September 31-October 3, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Attending this conference would be an excellent opportunity for Georgia educators to attend a national conference without the higher out-of-state costs. The focus of the conference will be career pathways, academic rigor, career tech and academic integration, Career Pathways Leadership Certification, Establishing Career Academies, Developing Programs of Study, Implementing an Effective Career Pathways Design in Tough Economic Times, and Building College Career Pathways: Targeting Economic Development Needs.
At the NCPN national conference, Georgia students will be given the opportunity to display successful projects of the past and current years in student showcase booths during the conference. The student showcases will be located in the Exhibit Hall of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta on Thursday, October 1, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. What a tremendous opportunity for our Georgia CTAE students to gain national exposure and recognition!
Middle School Curriculum Update - Fall 2009 brought about the arrival of the new middle-school curriculum GPS for Agriculture, Business and Computer Science, Career Development, Engineering and Technology, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Healthcare Science for grades 6-8. Resolving CTAE Professional Learning Registration Issues - Please help us discourage registering for a CTAE workshop and then not showing up for workshop! Unfortunately, this practice causes others not to be able to register, as the workshop appears to be full. Please use the following procedure to remove someone or yourself from a CTAE workshop (no less than two (2) weeks prior to the event).
1. Log-In to www.ctaern.org 2. In your Menu click on "myWorkshops" 3. Click the "select" button next to the workshop
you wish to be removed from. 4. Click the "Cancel Participant Out Of
Workshop" button. 5. Immediate verification will be received of
removal from the workshop.
New CTAE State Webinar/Elluminate Catalog - On September 1, 2009, a CTAE webinar/Elluminate catalog will be available to local system administrators. Local system administrators may review any previous CTAE webinar/Elluminate activities and/or use the sessions as a re-delivery training tool for your teachers, guidance counselors or other people within your system.
To access the CTAE webinar/Elluminate catalog: Go to http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/ci_cta.aspx (GaDOE CTAE Home Page) Scroll down until you see the Development and Transition category. Click on Professional Development. Once there, find the Webinar/Elluminate Section. Select the category, (i.e. ECP, Career Guidance) that best fits the event you are looking for. Mr. Shore's construction program has held industry accreditation since 2001. The Contren curriculum is the industry standard in training and education, and teachers who report Contren modules on behalf of their students give these students a portable credential issued by the National Center for Construction Education and Research to take to a jobsite, technical college or four-year university. Mr. Shore reported, on average, over eight module completions per student during the 2008-2009 school year.
CEFGA Ambassador: Dean Cutler, East Laurens High School, Dublin. Mr. Cutler, a construction teacher, was named CEFGA Ambassador for his tireless work promoting

CEFGA's activities among his fellow educators and his local trade professionals. Mr. Cutler also achieved CEFGA industry accreditation in 2009.
CEFGA administers the industry accreditation program, a summer internship program, Georgia's SkillsUSA contests in construction and metals, and the nation's largest construction career expo. CEFGA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting careers in construction and addressing the industry's skilled worker shortage. CEFGA's mission is to attract, train and motivate the next generation of construction professionals - designers, builders and managers. We do this by bringing the construction industry to students and students to the construction industry.
New Media Education Foundation of Georgia (NMEFGA) - There are two video contests for BVP students sponsored by NMEFGA and SkillsUSA Georgia. One contest has a $500 prize. To find out more, go to www.nmefga.org and click on the "BVP Teachers Home" menu item. Both contests are open until October 31. NMEFGA is looking for your CTAE stories to post on the website.

Engineering and Technology Ron Barker at rbarker@doe.k12.ga.us
This new school year is one that holds great promise for the students in the area of Engineering and Technology. Engineers, engineering technologists, engineering technicians, and technological problem solvers are all in demand. The Engineering, Manufacturing, Electronics, Energy Systems, and Engineering Graphics and Design pathways are all key components of making the United States a key global player in the current international economy. The need

is there and we have a full year ahead of us to continue improving our programs.
Peach State Pathways DVD The first item we have at hand is the new Georgia Instructional Resources for CTAE PeachState Pathways DVD Version 2.0 for 2009-2010. This DVD has both Engineering and Manufacturing pathway curriculum material to support the Standards and Elements that were produced in Phase I and Phase II. The second item is "The Taking the Road Less Traveled II", an educator's toolkit which has great engineering career information and a non-traditional role model video featuring engineering careers and women. CTAE administrators received both of these items at the GACTE conference this past July. Still another resource is the Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology and Science [CATTS] materials that are available on-line through the GaDOE website. These tools and other useful information will be presented at the GETEA teacher's conference in October and at the Georgia TSA co-curricular youth organization meetings coming up in September, October, and November. More information will follow through the CTAERN. Participation is the key to a great year!
Healthcare Science, Cosmetology, Law, Public Safety Phyllis Johnson at pjohnson@doe.k12.ga.us
Webinars After a great GACTE Summer Conference filled with exciting professional development sessions, we are reenergized and ready to enter a new school year. During this school year, I will be offering a monthly webinar for my program areas. Some of the webinars will be general and will be appropriate for healthcare, public safety, and cosmetology teachers, while others will be program specific. The purpose of the webinars is for these teachers to learn about "Best Practices," stay updated on current industry trends and knowledge, CTSO updates, and to connect with each other. Teachers will be sent an Elluminate link with the date and time of the webinar. If they are unable to participate at the time, the webinars will be archived for future viewing. More detailed instructions and information will be forthcoming.
Survey Regional Mini Conference - I will also be sending a survey to determine if Healthcare teachers would be able to attend a "Regional Mini Conference" to update their healthcare knowledge/skills with the current trends and information. The Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) across the state as well as

Healthcare Science Technology Educators Association (HSTEA) have offered to help sponsor these one-day events that will be offered at four to six sites across the state. You may attend any of the conferences which will all be different and will involve some type of "field trip", where you will have the chance to interact with current industry personnel and see new and innovative equipment and treatment facilities.
The plan for cosmetology and public safety is to provide additional industry training (and possibly "field trips") on Friday, Jan. 29, prior to the Winter Workshop to be held in Statesboro, Georgia, on Jan 2930, 2010.
New Teacher Workshop A New Teacher Workshop is planned for October 2829, in Macon, Georgia. More detailed information will be available soon on www.ctaern.org . This training will be different from NTI training as it will be more program-specific, looking at curriculum and lesson plans, CTSOs, etc. The training is for any new teacher (less than three years) and is especially helpful for teachers that haven't attended any teacher preparation program yet.
Sign-up for "Preparation for Industry Certification in Healthcare Science Education (HSE)" is now available at www.ctaern.org ,and will be held September 10-11, at Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, Georgia.
HOSA DVD - Your school will receive a HOSA DVD in the mail, which will be a great tool for teachers to introduce HOSA in the classroom. The DVD focuses the benefits of being involved in HOSA and on a number of CTAE Foundation skills including leadership, teamwork, professional dress, careers in healthcare as well as many other topics. The DVD is designed to be used over a five-day period and contains ideas, discussion, and activities to compliment the DVD. A HOSA advisor notebook was given out to those who attended HOSA Success Day this summer before GACTE. Those who were not able to attend can contact Allen Seigler at Georgia HOSA (www.georgiahosa.org) to find out about how to receive this helpful advisor notebook. Please have your teachers mark their calendars for the HOSA Fall Leadership Conference which will be held October 2325, in Atlanta. Please see the website for instructions.
SkillsUSA Fall Leadership - SkillsUSA Fall Leadership for Cosmetology and Public Safety as well as other T& I programs will be held September 17-18,

in Jekyll Island. Please check the website for signup instructions or contact Gayle Silvey, Executive Director (www.skillsusageorgia.org).
Marketing, Sales and Services Linda Smith at lismith@doe.k12.ga.us
Marketing Education Update - Keeping abreast of "what's happening and when" is always a challenge. To this end, a listing of the Marketing/DECA activities, along with dates and locations, for August and September follows:
Advisory Committee Workshop, August 28-29, North Gwinnett High School, Suwannee. This master teacher has an incredible Advisory Committee and will impart ideas appropriate for CTAE teachers and administrators in all CTAE program areas.
New DECA Advisors' Workshop, September 11-12, South Forsyth High School, Cumming. This master advisor will help new DECA advisors distinguish between the "must do" and the "nice to do" to ensure a successful first year.
WorkWinWow DECA Training Session, September 24, Westin Atlanta North Hotel, Perimeter. National DECA has made many changes in the FY 2010 competitive events. Therefore, this training session is very important for all DECA advisors.
National Conclave - To aid CTAE administrators in planning for the 2009-2010 school year, an email was sent stating that our Marketing/DECA Professional Development Conference, January 2010, has been cancelled mainly due to financial restrictions in local school systems. Since Atlanta won the bid for the National Conclave, a premier business and marketing conference coming to Atlanta in June 2010, many teachers noted that they could not attend our Marketing/DECA Conference, the Conclave, and GACTE. Therefore, if teachers visit with you about the Conclave, please know that we plan to make this conference most beneficial for our Georgia teachers, as well as those around the nation. The Conclave is hosted by MBA Research (the national consortium for industry-validated business and marketing curriculum and professional development) and Marketing Education at GaDOE.
Special Populations Virginia Turner at vturner@doe.k12.ga.us
Staff Development Conference - The intervention TIPs staff development conference will be held in Savannah this year at the Desoto Hilton. Session

topics will include Best Practices, Technology in the Classroom, Integration of Academics, the Work Ready Initiative, Certtification, and much more. We are excited at providing this information and thoughtprovoking conference to the coordinators in Georgia.
Training Camp - The Career Technical Instruction (CTI) State Officer Team attended an overnight training camp at the FFA-FCCLA Center in Covington, Georgia. The officers arrived as individuals from across the state but left as a team bonded together and ready for success. Mr. Scott Carey, CTAE Program Manager, joined the team on Thursday evening and led a session on Public Speaking and Introductions. Mr. Carey pushed the officers to see their full potential. It was an experience they will never forget. The following day the team learned the importance of communication and teamwork as they performed challenges on the ropes course.
Etiquette Session - A session on etiquette and manners was led by Jenny Brown from the UGA Extension Service of Butts County. The day wrapped up as Mr. Monty Rhodes, Executive Director of FBLA, challenged the officers to take the skills they had learned through the training and apply it to various activities. Julie Kenny and Virginia Turner also inspired our officers to reach for success and reminded them of the important role they have as state officers.
Charles Banks, Accountability/Program Improvement (cbanks@doe.k12.ga.us)
Welcome back to another, what we hope to be a great year! I do not need to remind you of the tough budget situations we are all in. This year will require more frugal spending than ever. The Accountability Team is resolved not to let this financial crisis interfere with the services we provide to you and to the students you serve in Georgia. The Accountability Team is working to review and approve your local grants as quickly and as accurately as possible. Please remember to complete your budget information and sign-off on each grant that you applied for before 12:00 a.m. September 30, 2009. Budget constraints this year will not allow us to extend the availability of any grants (incomplete applications or grants not signed-off by superintendent) beyond this date. These challenging financial times will require us to seek creative ways to fund those programs we are accustomed to providing. However, we cannot allow our creativity to result in audit problems with supplanting of Federal Funds. Auditors are aware of

Page |9
the challenges we face and this could become the focus of their attention for FY09 and FY10.
The single grant that appears to cause the most challenge in funding is the CTE Extended Day (Teacher Support) grant. As we mentioned at the GACTE Summer Conference, this grant received a 10% holdback along with other state grants. If systems do not have local funds to supplement the grant to fully fund each teacher for extended day, you must decide how you will divide the funds to serve as many teachers with POW's as possible. A few have asked about uploading another PDF file from the CTAE Resource Network, but remember you only need to upload another file if you replaced a vacant position or you added or deleted a teacher from your original list. You can show the adjusted amount you funded each teacher from the State grant in the yellow description box on the Consolidated Application under the budget tab. If you continue to have difficulty with this please contact your Region Coordinator or the Accountability Unit at DOE for assistance.
Construction-Related Equipment Grants Congratulations to those systems that have been awarded CREQ equipment grants for new and/or modified CTAE labs that are opening this school year. Over $15 million dollars in bond funds are being made available for use in providing large, essential instructional equipment in these facilities. CTAE Directors in these systems should remember to complete their Consolidated Application sections (Program Information and Budget) for these grants, including uploading their system grant agreement(s). Also (IMPORTANT), once you begin to consider your purchases, use the FY10 Purchasing Guidelines which are a part of the system grant agreement document to identify the criteria for making reimbursable purchases of appropriate equipment. If you need assistance in any way, please contact Dennis Clarke at 770-5002029 or dclarke@doe.k12.ga.us.
OCR On-Site Compliance Reviews The following systems Monroe County, Spalding County, Cartersville City, Fulton County and Lee County are scheduled for on-site reviews this school year. Information has been sent to these system superintendents and copied to system directors. If you are in one of these systems and have not received your planning information, please contact Dennis Clarke at 770-500-2029 or dclarke@doe.k12.ga.us.
