Gary Steppe, State Director (gsteppe@doe.k12.ga.us)
It is important to keep the focus on our mission in CTAE. Our mission is to prepare our students for post-secondary education and the workforce. CTAE has been blessed over the years with strong financial support to accomplish our mission. Generally, when budget dollars are tight as they are now, the people who are responsible for allocating those dollars begin to ask for data that substantiates how well their investment in that mission has been used. Before making budget allocations, they will request data to determine if their investment is paying dividends. Those questions haven't been asked to a great extent previously, but that will change in the coming months.
The following are three initiatives that we need to be working on right now to get ourselves and our students where we need to be in order to provide the data when it is requested. I consider these initiatives to be top priorities:
Increase the number of pathway completers. After students have completed a pathway, ensure they are prepared to be successful when taking any end-of-pathway national or state credentialing assessment given by a certifying agency aligned with that pathway. Increase the number of CTAE programs that achieve and maintain industry certification.
Emily Spann, Development and Transition (espann@doe.k12.ga.us)

What a pleasure it has been to visit with so many of you at the six (6) regional drive-in meetings during October! We hope you received updated CTAE information that you were able to take back and use in your local systems. The valuable questions and feedback from you will be so helpful in planning and implementation of our CTAE curriculum-related programs. As the year progresses, please don't hesitate to contact me or any of our GaDOE staff, if you have questions or comments regarding our programs.

CTAE Curriculum Updates:

1. Marine Engine Technology Career Pathway - Special thanks to Savannah-Chatham Schools CTAE Director, Derrick Muhammad, for his leadership in locally creating a Marine Engine Technology Career Pathway. This project originated from an identified need in SavannahChatham; however, the new pathway will be available for statewide use. Please join us in thanking the Savannah-Chatham team for their hard work in developing quality curriculum that can be shared by all. The pathway will be included in the Phase IV portion of our website.
2. Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) CTAE Courses Meeting Fourth Science Requirement Update

Since the initiation of new graduation requirements for students enrolling in ninth grade for the first time in the 2008-2009 school year and subsequent years, the Board of Regents (BOR) has made changes to their admission requirements.

Board of Regents Policy Manual

4.2 Undergraduate Admissions 4.2.1.1 Freshman Requirements SCIENCE: Three (3) units of science, with at least one laboratory course from the life sciences and one laboratory course from the physical sciences. Students who graduate in 2012 or later must have four (4) units of science. Georgia Public high School graduates must have at least one (1) unit of biology, one (1) unit of physical science or physics, and one (1) unit of chemistry, earth systems, environmental science, or an advanced placement science course.

We have since worked with BOR to ensure support for acceptance of CTAE courses for science credit regarding admission requirements. The intent is to have one list of courses approved for meeting both high school graduation and college admission science requirements. This involves a review process of CTAE courses by BOR faculty. This is an ongoing process that began with examining the CTAE courses originally designated as meeting the fourth science requirement for high school graduation. As a result, there have been changes to the original list of approved fourth science courses.

5. Phase IV CTAE High School and Phase II CTAE Middle School curriculum revisions were both approved by the SBOE on September 10, 2009. These courses will be available for implementation in school year 2010-2011. The CTAE website is updated to include these phases.

6. Please see the revised attachment for the latest information regarding course numbering for the Phase IV HS and Phase II MS curriculum course numbers. The proposed course numbers are pending State Board of Education approval; however, these numbers may currently serve as place holders if registering students now for the 2010-2011 school year. Final approval is anticipated at the January 2010 meeting.

End of Pathway Assessment/Student Credentialing Update
National Credentialing Opportunities for End-of-Pathway Completers
As many of you are already aware through your participation in a recent Fall CTAE Administrator Update, we are seeking your assistance with our FY2010 Assessment Activities. An initial request for assistance was sent via email to CTAE Directors during the summer when many of you were enjoying your summer break. Although we did get good responses for specific program areas, pleas made by department personnel to obtain more pathway completers at the fall updates have not gone unnoticed by our CTAE Administrators. Many of you requested that we re-send the original "Assistance Needed/FY2010 Assessment Activities" form. Please find this form attached below.
Any student who has completed a career pathway (or who is taking the third/final course in the career pathway) is eligible to sit for the end-of-pathway assessment during the spring testing window of March 1 May 31, 2009. National credentialing opportunities will be available for students who successfully pass assessments in one of the below career pathways. A link to the assessment blueprint is being included in order for your instructors to familiarize themselves with the competencies being tested:

If your system can participate, please complete the attached "Assistance Needed" form and email it to Ms. Mamie Hanson at mhanson@doe.k12.ga.us by November 6, 2009. We appreciate your efforts in providing national credentialing opportunities to your pathway completers.

John (Chip) Bridges, Agricultural Education (jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us)
It has been a great pleasure for me to get to meet most of you during the fall drive-in meetings. During my first month as program manager for agricultural education I have been humbled by the positive remarks and well-wishes that you have given to me. I have not only been meeting with many of the CTAE administrators across the state, but I have been fortunate to meet with every person on the state Ag-Ed staff, the Georgia FFA Alumni Board of Directors, the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association Board of Directors, and many of our great agriculture teachers across the state. In addition, I have also been able to meet with our State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox to discuss the focus and future of agricultural

education in Georgia. Just as a way to keep you informed and to keep my focus, I would like to share with you the major short term initiatives for agricultural education during this school year.
1. Focus on Data Collection for Agricultural Education -- by the end of this school year we will be able to provide solid numbers that show how many students are enrolled in each of our agricultural education courses. In addition, we will be able to determine valuable information such as average class size, percentage of students participating in FFA career development events (CDE's) and which of our pathways are involving the most students.
2. Re-establishment of Industry Certification in Agricultural Education - many of you have asked about industry certification, and although we do not expect any funding for this part of our program, we will be working on a comprehensive plan to allow for schools to consider getting industry certification in Ag-Ed in situations where state dollars are not required to make it happen.
3. Support for Utilizing the Capital Equipment Grants for Agricultural Education - We are going to make every effort to provide better support for those of you that are needing the construction-related capital equipment grants in agricultural education.
4. Study the effectiveness of agricultural education on integration of science and math skills -- it has been several years since the last study was completed on the impact agricultural education has on a student's science and math skills. We will be completing a study this year to make sure that our agriculture teachers are still providing our students with improved math and science scores and skills.
5. Review of the procedure for awarding the AG. Extended Day/Year Grants to teachers -- with budget short falls and accountability of state funds being so important, we will be reviewing the procedure that is currently being used to distribute the state grant funds for AG Extended Day/Year to insure that the best use of the funds is being implemented and that our best agriculture teachers are supported with the grant.
As always, your support for agricultural education is so valuable and is always appreciated.
Please visit the Georgia Agricultural Education website for any information you may need about the program: www.gaaged.org.
