CTAE NEWSLETTER
June 2008
From James Woodard Director, Career, Technical & Agricultural Education
From the desk of James Woodard
It seems like yesterday when we were congratulating you on a successful year. Now we are all quickly gearing up for a new school year. I know that many of you are taking vacations and some well deserved time off. This newsletter should serve as a reminder of some things to come in the upcoming school year. Also, I remind you of the upcoming GACTE Summer Conference. I look forward to seeing everyone while we work with GACTE to provide an exciting professional development opportunity for you and your teachers. Please take a look at the following items provided by the program managers and their program specialist.
At its June 2008 Board of Directors' meeting, the Resource Network welcomed the following CTAE Administrators as its newest members: Pete Williams, Grady County Schools; Laura Youmans, Griffin-Spalding County Schools; Michael Canady, Columbia County Schools; and Scott Chafin, Worth County Schools. As these CTAE colleagues begin their "new" service to the organization, the Network extends a big THANK YOU to the following Board members whose terms ended in June: Delmas Watkins, DeKalb County Schools; Cristie Garrett, Hall County Schools; Marsena Boatright, Bacon County Schools; and Bruce Shepard, Berrien County Schools. The Network values the leadership of its Board members and welcomes representation from school systems statewide. If any CTAE Directors are interested in providing leadership and expertise as "future" Board members, please contact Cathy Myers, COO, CTAE Resource Network, Inc., by phone at 770-334-3410 or by email at cmyers@ctaern.org.
From Program Delivery Team, Scott Carey, Program Manager Summer is in full swing and our Program Delivery Team is in action. The National HOSA Conference is currently being held in Dallas, Texas. Students from across the state are competing in Healthcare-related competitions, events, and leadership activities. The FBLA National Leadership Conference will be held in Atlanta on June 26-29, and the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference will take place in Kansas City on June 24-27. TSA and FCCLA.... will travel later in the summer to Orlando. Our program specialists and CTSO director have prepared our Georgia students well for these conferences which are the highlight of the year for our CTAE students.
Our team has put together a great set of in-service activities/classes that are available through the CTAERN Web site for teachers. Ideas and practices for the new pathways will be addressed in many of these classes.
We are excited about offering two new areas of industry certification for the upcoming year for Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education. When a program became industry certified, it received a "stamp of excellence", which represents the apex of program quality. Only those programs that have successfully undergone rigorous reviews by leaders from business and industry are recognized with this distinction.
I hope by now that each of you has taken the time to view and evaluate the new course offerings in the Phase III rollout. You can find them on the Georgia Department of Education Web site at gadoe.org.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the systems for giving us such excellent feedback during the telephone survey that we carried out throughout the week of May 19-23. This process allowed us to confirm your grants and also to start thinking about how we can improve the Consolidated Application for FY10.
Budget Information for FY09 The long awaited confirmation is here! The State Board has approved the CTAE budget; we are working with the IT Department to have the function and object codes as well as the budget loaded. As soon as the IT Department informs us that this process is complete, we will notify the systems via an email through LPlan of their budget allocations.
Reminder about FY08 All budgeted funds must be spent by 6/30/08 and close-outs completed by 7/30/08.
Reminder about FY09 Remember to make plans to attend the GACTE Conference, as we will be presenting workshops related to both CPI and the Consolidated Application process. To start preparing for the allocation of grant funds, please take a look at the Budget Guidance at this link: http://www.gadoe.org/ci_cta.aspx?PageReq=CICTALocalPlan. Keep the link handy for when your budget has been loaded in the Consolidated Application (which will be as soon as we receive State Board Approval). Once you have received your budget allocations, remember that only 5% of your grant funds for the Program Improvement grant can be used towards administrative costs that you will budget for in Function codes 2300 or 2400. Be prepared! We are working on developing annual reports that will be tied to each of the grants. We will keep you informed of this process in the coming months. Remember: Based on Perkins IV legislation systems cannot spend funds until after their Local Board of Education has approved their Local Plan.

Nancy comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from many years in education and from serving most recently as the CTAE Director for Elbert County. Nancy will be starting in August and at that time we will provide the systems with her contact information.
From Agriculture Education, John Wilkinson, Program Manager
Staff Development Recent In-Service classes provide Focus on Agriculture Courses for Science Credit More than 130 agricultural education teachers across the state have recently participated in an intensive study on incorporating science principles into the agriculture courses that they teach. Science principles and concepts have always been ingrained into the agricultural education curriculum; however, these inservice training classes were created to help enhance the rigor and accountability for agriculture teachers teaching these courses. Agriculture courses are tailor made for providing hands-on instruction with science principles. This focus on science application in the agricultural curriculum comes as a result of the new graduation rule and the opportunity for students to receive science credit for taking an agriculture course. There are currently nine courses that will count as the fourth science requirement needed in order for a student to graduate. These courses are Animal Science and Biotechnology, Plant Science and Biotechnology, Veterinary Science, Basic Agriculture Science and Technology, Forestry Science, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Management, Biotechnology, and General Horticulture and Plant Science. During the week long in-service class, lab activities and instructional aides were provided that will enhance the teachers' ability to provide a focus on science concepts in regular agriculture courses. Many of the training activities were conducted in the traditional laboratory setting; however, some of the science concepts and applications will be helpful to the teachers in outdoor labs such as plant science, forestry, and natural resources. Particular focus was also provided on incorporating science application in the supervised agricultural experience and FFA activities provided to students enrolled in agricultural education. All of these in-service classes on teaching agriculture courses for science credit were filled to capacity. Nearly one-third of all agriculture teachers in Georgia participated. Agricultural Education continues to enhance a student's understanding of science.
