CTAE NEWSLETTER
May 2008
From James Woodard Director, Career, Technical & Agricultural Education
From the desk of James Woodard I know that you are in the midst of getting ready to let the students go home for summer break. This has always been an exciting time as we get the opportunity to refresh, retool and reenergize for another year of opportunities. Congratulations on a great year in Career, Technical and Agricultural Education. Though things have been fast paced I hope you continue to see progress in implementing a model of career pathways that will serve our state well into the future. As you complete post planning and enter that next phase of reenergizing, always know how much we appreciate what you are doing on a day by day basis. The energy you expel for your students is overwhelming at times, but rewarding when you see their maturity and growth. Have a great summer, and we look forward to seeing you at summer conference or at many of the professional development opportunities occurring throughout the summer.
Secondary Summit
Please see below the announcement about the Secondary Summit that will take place in September. There is a concentrated effort to have sessions related to CTAE. Please take the time to respond to the call for presentations. We look forward to highlighting great things happening in CTAE. On Monday, September 22, 2008, the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) will host a Secondary Summit at the Macon Centreplex for middle and high school teams. Breakout sessions will focus on key topics for education innovation and reform in Georgia, including acceleration, student support, advisement, curriculum, standards-based instruction, CTAE programs, data utilization, and instructional leadership. All sessions will be presented by practitioners who will share their best practices, challenges, solutions, and results. All middle and high schools are invited to send a team of three from each school. In addition to the school teams, each district's Superintendent is invited to bring one district-level staff member, one local school board member and a business leader from their community.
Call for Presentations If your district has an outstanding program that should be featured at the Summit, we would like to know about it. Breakout session proposals can be submitted to the GaDOE by completing the application at: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB227MNQGETCA Presenters will be notified by the end of the school year.

National Dropout Prevention Conference There is a wonderful opportunity for CTAE programs to present at the National Dropout Prevention Conference in Atlanta at the Crowne Plaza on Nov. 16-19, 2008. I know we have so many superb programs that help with the dropout problem and the graduation rate. I am attaching the Presenter form. The deadline for proposals has been extended to May 30, 2008. Work-Based Learning Workshops Clarification
Workshops are being offered by the CTAE Resource Network as a technical update (PLU Credit only) for workbased learning coordinators. This includes coordinators of YAP, WBL and all Co-op coordinators except coordinators of Special Population Programs and some Young Farmer / Ag Co-op programs. In the Special Populations Programs (CTI, CCAE & PS), work-based learning is a standard component included in the teacher's training required by the Professional Standards Commission. Each coordinator holding a valid teaching certificate with an endorsement received work-based learning information and training at the institution attended. The standards and guidelines for work-based learning placements for these programs are aside from the CRE Manual that guides all other programs. Updates and additional information for WBL in Special Population Programs is shared though other professional development training as instructed by the department. Please inform your teachers of Special Population Programs that the summer workshops posted on the CTAE Resource Network website do not apply to them.

Page |3
Likewise, technical updates for Ag Co-op and Young Farmer teachers are handled in other specific staff development opportunities. GaDOE is continuing to work with the CTAE Resource Network to seek Professional Standards Commission (PSC) approval for the Work-Based Learning workshops leading to a certification endorsement. Assuming this process is culminated in the fall, participants from the summer workshops will be given the opportunity to enroll in an additional course to complete the Approved Prep Program. More details about the potential endorsement and certification required to teach work-based learning courses will be forthcoming. Note that the summer workshops are designed to help teachers implement their program according to the CRE Manual, but are not yet part of an approved endorsement process.

High Schools That Work (HSTW) Award of Educational Achievement and Assessment Standards Workshop
Eighty-eight (88) schools in Georgia elected to take the HSTW Assessment during February, 2008. Out of the schools electing to take the HSTW assessment, sixty (60) senior career tech completers and/or dual seal recipients were randomly selected to participate in the assessment. Seven hundred sixty-three (763) students in Georgia met the new cut scores and will receive a HSTW Award of Educational Achievement. Students will receive a letter and certificate from SREB for their educational achievement, as well as a student college/work-readiness report in August. On May 9, 2008, all HSTW schools were notified of the students receiving the HSTW Award of Educational Achievement award so that they may be recognized at honors day or during high school graduation. Please note that a workshop is planned for the fall to disaggregate data from the HSTW Assessment for use in the school improvement process.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the systems for helping us to identify the glitches that have occurred with the Consolidated Application.
Local Maintenance of Effort Form: When entering information in the numerical fields on the Local Maintenance of Effort form, do not leave any object code category blank. If there is no budget for a specific object code category, then enter a zero there.
Middle School Support Grant: All Systems requesting the Middle School Support Grant for their middle school teachers must complete a Program of Work on www.CTAERN.org. The Excel Spreadsheet (generated in CTAERN) should be downloaded from the network and saved to your hard drive. You should then upload this Excel spreadsheet which will include the middle and high school teachers' salary calculations to both the CTE Extended Day grant for now. Systems will be notified when the Middle School Support grant is available in the Consolidated Application.
CTE Extended Year Activities: Systems that received funding in FY08 will upload the Extended Year Report showing the completed extended year activities for the prior year in order to be considered for funding. Those systems that were not funded through the state grant, but received funding locally for Extended Year, should also complete and upload this report as well to be eligible for funding in FY09 (see form attached). Reminder about FY08
Budget Amendments: The final date for submitting amendments to FY08 grants is 6/6/2008. We will not be able to approve any amendments submitted to us after this date.
All budgeted funds must be spent by 6/30/08 and close-outs completed by 7/30/08. Please remember to make plans to attend the GACTE conference, as we will be presenting workshops related
to CPI and Consolidated Application.
From Agriculture Education, John Wilkinson, Program Manager
Georgia FFA Association
As the curtain falls on the 2007-2008 school year, the Georgia FFA Association wrapped up the year in style at the 80th Georgia FFA Convention. The FFA Convention was held April 24-26, 2008, in Macon, and more than 2,800 students, advisors, sponsors, and guests attended. Highlights of the convention include motivational speakers; recognition of hundreds of student award winners; a concert by Georgia's own Luke Bryan; FFA members giving back to the community through landscaping projects for the Georgia Academy of the Blind and a food drive for the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank; the election of the new 2008-2009 State Officer Team; and the announcement that Georgia FFA set yet another all time high in membership with over 28,000 members. This marks the tenth consecutive year of membership growth for the Georgia FFA Association. When the gavel fell on the 80th Georgia FFA Convention, Georgia FFA members and advisors immediately began preparing for a busy summer. More than 1,200 students will attend Summer Leadership Camp at the Georgia FFAFCCLA Center, and 40 FFA members will participate in a bus trip to Washington Leadership Conference. These students will spend a week in our nation's capitol experiencing the FFA's premier national leadership opportunity. For more information on the Georgia FFA Association, please visit http://www.georgiaffa.org.

The BASIC Training program is stronger than ever! Now is the time to schedule your programs for the fall! As one of the many leadership programs offered by the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center, BASIC Training focuses on building and maintaining a successful teamwork atmosphere in student organizations. BASIC is an excellent field trip opportunity for all student organizations. It is a time for officers to plan their program of activities for the year. Many CTAE directors are bringing student officers from different chapters in order to unify all student organizations. BASIC can be developed as a day only event or can the expanded to an overnight trip. Students will learn important skills like communication, teamwork, conflict resolution and goals. Instruction is hands on and can include sessions on our low ropes course and our new high ropes course. Whether it's getting muddy or going over the 10 foot wall, students will have a blast! If you would like more information or would like to schedule an event, please visit our web site at www.BuildlingChapters.com or call Leroy Bagley at 770-786-6926 Ext 8. The Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe Chapter of Georgia Career Student Association won Chapter of the Year, the organization's highest honor, for the 2007-2008 school year. The event involves documenting chapter activities throughout the school year. These activities include the following: state conference attendance from previous year, officer training conference attendance, officer installation ceremony, chapter meetings and speakers, recreational activities, state officer election, region contests, career activities, local appreciation functions, publicity activities, statewide charity campaign participation, and chapter showcase which highlights extraordinary chapter and member accomplishments. To help celebrate our achievement, a member's parent and a local business surprised us greatly by commemorating our success with a billboard on Battlefield Parkway near the school.
