To my fellow Georgians,
Visiting schools is a constitutional obligation for the State Superintendent of Schools. But even if it wasn't, I'd do it. It's my favorite part of the job.
In the past four years, I have been privileged to visit more than 400 schools in over 120 districts all across Georgia. Each of these schools is different.
Some are in the middle of cities, while others are tucked in the North Georgia mountains. Some are in the rural areas of Middle and South Georgia, while others are amid the hustle and bustle of the metro Atlanta suburbs. Each school has different successes and different challenges.
October was a month of celebration for Georgia Schools.
Several schools were recognized for the amazing work they are doing, while two of Georgia's best and brightest teachers received a big surprise from the Milken Family Foundation. Here's a round-up of all the great news Georgia schools received this past month.
Blue Ribbon Schools Six Georgia Schools were recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools for high achievement and/or strong improvement. These six schools were from all over the state -- Chatham County, Bibb County, Rome City, Dougherty County, Hall County and Dawson County -- and are doing amazing work.
A team from these schools will go to Washington D.C. in November to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and President Bush. Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox visited five of the schools recently and presented them with a certificate from the Georgia Department of Education and a letter of commendation from Governor Sonny Perdue.

State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox has been awarded the "Friend of Mathematics Award" from the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM).
The award, which is only handed out when there is a deserving recipient, was given to Superintendent Cox for her leadership in the revision of the state's math curriculum.
"This is truly an honor and I thank the Georgia Council for this award," said Superintendent Cox, who received the award at GCTM's recent Math Conference in Eatonton. "It means a tremendous amount to be recognized by a group like GCTM, which is so dedicated to success for all of our students."
Dottie Whitlow, the President of GCTM, said, "Kathy Cox is receiving this award because she has exhibited passion, vision, leadership, and courage in raising expectations and standards for mathematics education in this state with the creation of the Georgia Performance Standards for mathematics."
Superintendent Cox said she shares the award with the groups of educators and academics that wrote the new math standards and the teachers who are implementing the new curriculum in the classroom.
