Mapping a Path for 2021
With 2020 finally behind us, we are leveraging our learnings from the past year to plan our path forward. Despite new vaccines, a full recovery of the tourism industry will not be immediate with a calendar change, but that does not deter or delay our work. Travelers will continue to seek similar types of experiences they did in 2020, so knowing what worked last year has never been more important.
ExploreGeorgia.org experienced year-over-year record-breaking website traffic last year, outperforming the last five years. In 2020, all of our social media audiences grew by 4.6%, and engagement increased by 7.4%.
We reviewed the top content on several of our channels to see what performed the best. We found that the top performing theme was, you guessed it, the outdoors. This category always performs well, but this year it dominated across all our owned and paid media. Traveler sentiment research and health data suggests this category will remain important to travelers through 2021.
Instagram continues to produce far and away our highest engagement and impressions. While this audience is smaller than Facebook, these followers are more active with our posts. Pinterest is also gaining ground, generating clicks to our website that are more engaged with the site than other social channels. If you look into your own data, you might find these two platforms are worth your time and investment in 2021.
Collectively, we can use this information to guide our plans for 2021. We'll continue to consider what content is meeting the needs of consumers of Georgia's tourism industry, and to monitor traveler sentiment and health data as we move forward together.

unfortunately be canceled for the time-being. As new recommendations emerge and guidelines are updated, the possibility of hosting an industry event at the Capitol later this year is to be determined. We will share information as it becomes available. The release of the 2021 Explore Georgia Travel Guide will also be delayed until later in the spring, and we will keep you updated on a release date. There is a limited supply of 2020 Explore Georgia Travel Guides available that we will continue to fulfill through online requests and our VICs, and a supply is available if you need additional copies. The vast majority of 2020 travel guides were distributed through a strategic buy of major metropolitan newspapers in key source markets for travelers to Georgia.
