Visitor Information Center Update
In early March, as COVID-19 cases began to sweep the country, we made the difficult decision to close all 11 of our state-run Visitor Information Centers (VICs). Since then, the visitor services team has been working diligently on a plan to reopen the VICs safely. Yesterday, we reopened the centers in Augusta and West Point as part of a phased test. During this test, we will gain an understanding of how the new safety equipment and installations are performing, as well as gauge the needs and requirements of our staff and visitors.

Health. Should new guidance be issued, the VICs will comply accordingly. As we test and adjust how best to operate the VICs safely and effectively for staff and guests, and in accordance with the Governor's orders, we plan to continue to open the VICs in phases.

Georgia State Parks to Manage Sylvania and Plains VICs
Each year, more than 13 million travelers through Georgia stop at state-run Visitor Information Centers (VICs) to be greeted with helpful advice, brochures and, of course, free samples of Georgia-grown peanuts. Two of these centers those in Sylvania and Plains not only help travelers, but are also destinations in their own right. Management of these two VICs was recently transferred from our department to the State Parks and Historic Sites Division, which is part of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Sylvania has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operated state visitor center in the nation. Plains is best known for presidential history and peanuts. The staff at both VICs will be retained, and both VICs will operate as information centers, offering state travel information as well as information related to state parks and other DNR offerings.

Reopening Signage Available
Explore Georgia has created a set of reopening signage that will be used in the state Visitor Information Centers, and it is now available to Regional Visitor Information Centers for their use. Below is a link to download the signage. There are two versions of each file: one for inhouse printing and one to send to a professional printer.
