...................................................................................................................................................................... 2013 TOURISM & HOSPITALITY DAY AT THE CAPITOL - TUESDAY, JANUARY 29
The 2013 Tourism & Hospitality Day at the Capitol is set for Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta. It is more important than ever that we build strong advocacy programs in order to showcase the important role of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry in our statewide economy. We are asking everyone in the industry at large, including representatives from CVBs, attractions, hotels, restaurants, cultural tourism venues, business people, artists and musicians from all over the state to support and participate in this important event.
This year's event is a collaboration of several hospitality industry partners including:

Georgia Arts Network
Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus
Georgia Chamber of Commerce (Tourism and Entertainment Committee)

Farms hold a central role in the heritage of our state, having formed the economic, cultural, and family foundation for generations of Georgians. Some farms have been continuously operating for over 100 years and deserve recognition for their historical importance. In addition, farms must have been continuously farmed by members of the same family for at least 100 years. Qualifying Georgia Centennial Farms are honored each October at an awards ceremony at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry. ...................................................................................................................................................................... GEORGIA INDUSTRY NEWS: TOO MANY TOURISTS? SAVANNAH, GA., DEBATES WHETHER TO MAKE ROOM FOR DOUBLE-DECKER BUSES
A proposal to put double-decker tour buses on the streets of Savannah's historic district has residents rallying to bring the plans to a screeching halt, with critics fearing the buses would hit ancient oak limbs and give sightseers a peeping Tom's view into Victorian homes. Two Boston businessmen are lobbying Savannah City Hall to end a 17-year prohibition on double-decker buses in the coastal city's downtown historic district, which draws 12 million visitors a year. Savannah's Downtown Neighborhood Association is urging officials to deny the request. Click here to read the Washington Post article.
...................................................................................................................................................................... GEORGIA INDUSTRY NEWS: OFFICIALS BEGIN PROCESS OF INCREASING HOTEL/MOTEL TAX (CORDELE)
Officials in Cordele, GA approved a 1% increase in the hotel/motel tax. This extra money will be used to pay for bonds needed to fund the Quiet Community project. Specifically, railway crossings will be upgraded to accommodate trains not using horns as warning devices at the intersections. Now that city officials have approved the increase, state legislators also must give their approval. Click here to read the Cordele Dispatch article.
...................................................................................................................................................................... GEORGIA INDUSTRY NEWS: GEORGIA MICRODISTILLERIES GROWING IN NUMBER
"It won't be too long until there's a coffee roaster, brew pub, distillery and maybe a cacao artisan in every town," said Bill Owens, president of the American Distilling Institute. That prediction is about to come true for metro Atlanta. The region has Batdorf & Bronson roasting coffee, several microbreweries and Cacao Atlanta making bean-to-bar chocolate. Soon, it will have two microdistilleries. Craft distilleries, much like craft breweries, are on the rise. According to the ADI, there are about 240 small distilleries in the U.S. and Canada. By 2015, estimates say the number will likely jump to 400 to 450. In Georgia, the number has more than doubled in a year. There are currently five operating craft producers with three more in the works, two of them inside the Perimeter. Click here to read the Atlanta Journal-Constitution article.
...................................................................................................................................................................... INDUSTRY NEWS: TNOOZ IS TALKING TRAVEL TECH - TRIPADVISOR
More than half of TripAdvisor users say they won't book a hotel if it has no reviews according to research carried out for the company. The PhoCusWright study reveals TripAdvisor users (87%) feel more confident in their decision when they read the reviews and 98% say they find them 'accurate of the actual experience'. Additional findings show 59% of users ignore extreme comments and only 5% say they focus on negative reviews. Travellers also say an appropriate response from hotel management is more likely to make them book (57%), improves their overall impression (84%) and makes them feel the hotel cares (78%). However, 64% say an aggressive response from the hotel makes them less likely to book. Click here to read the TNOOZ.com article and infographic.
...................................................................................................................................................................... INDUSTRY NEWS: VISUAL STORYTELLING - A CORE PART OF DIGITAL MARKETING FOR HOTELS
Simply having visual content available to travelers online is not going to help you differentiate your hotel and compel hotel shoppers to book. They're not looking for content - per se; they're looking for meaningful stories that help them better understand if your hotel will contribute to the success of their trip. Storytelling is captivating and the most effective form of communication, because "good story telling makes people sit up and listen," as stated by Correy Torrence from iMedia Connection. Click here to read the article.
...................................................................................................................................................................... INDUSTRY NEWS: BAD ONLINE REVIEW: HOW SHOULD YOU RESPOND?
When you've got a big, ugly customer review sitting near the top of your business' Google results, it can be a real thorn in your side. Moreover, a Harvard Business School study found that garnering an extra star in a Yelp review average leads to 5 to 9 percent more revenue for a restaurant. Perhaps that's why the owner of Deitz Development in Washington, D.C., was so incensed about negative reviews of his business on Yelp and Angie's List-a client said he stole from her home and billed her improperly-he sued her for $750,000. Communicators and business owners shouldn't just sit on their laurels when they see bad online reviews of their brands or businesses, reputation experts say. But there are other ways to go about it. "Right or wrong, that makes Dietz Development look bad," says Tripp Frohlichstein of MediaMasters Training. "Not the kind of organization I would want to do business with." So what does work? Making a connection and creating content. Click here to read the PR Daily article.
...................................................................................................................................................................... INDUSTRY NEWS: NEW TRAVEL WEBSITE PAIRS SOCIAL MEDIA, TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS
A new travel website based in Atlanta aims to give travel recommendations based on a user's interests, their social media activity and their friends' travel choices. The website, called Mr. Arlo, launched in November at mrarlo.com as a booking engine for hotels, restaurants and activities which can also link to social media accounts, give recommendations and allow users to share their travel plans with friends on social media. The site has partnerships with OpenTable and TripAdvisor for restaurant reservations and hotel reviews. Click here to read the Atlanta Journal-Constitution article.
...................................................................................................................................................................... INDUSTRY NEWS: USA TODAY LAUNCHES TRIPADVISOR ALTERNATIVE
USA Today Travel Media Group has announced the beta launch of HotelMe, an authenticated hotel review site. HotelMe, a joint venture of USA TODAY Travel Media Group and District Hospitality Partners, will offer authenticated hotel reviews checked against hotel records, through a patent pending process that will show verified reviews from guests who paid and stayed at the reviewed hotel. Fake reviews are a bane of the industry and have been the source of past controversy at sites like TripAdvisor and others. Hotel brands - including Hyatt, Best Western, La Quinta, Trump, Preferred Hotels, Omni, and Radisson - have already signed on to verify whether review writers actually stayed at their properties, regardless of how or where they booked the room.
