This year, for 2008 the Tourism Division has selected as the priority funding area - Georgia's Creative Economies with emphasis on Cultural and Heritage Tourism projects. 2) CUMBERLAND ISLAND NAMED ONE OF TRIPADVISOR'S BEST BEACHES IN AMERICA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cumberland Island was chosen by TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel community, as one of its top ten beaches in America. The winners were determined based on TripAdvisor's Popularity Index and TripAdvisor editors.
Featuring miles of peaceful and quiet beachfront, Cumberland Island Seashore has a uniquely isolated, undiscovered feel. The beach is ideal for swimming, or to just enjoy a quiet time basking in the sun. As one TripAdvisor traveler shared, "Cumberland Island is one of the most beautiful unspoiled beaches on the east coast. The white sand that extends for miles of endless beach is sublime."
"These spectacular beaches stand out for their world-class sand, breathtaking water, and all-around relaxing environments," said Michele Perry, director of communications for TripAdvisor. "Many of these beaches are off the beaten path, so travelers should pack their beach bags and head there before word gets out."
TripAdvisor's Top 10 Beaches in America:
1. Fort De Soto Park's North Beach, Tierra Verde, Florida 2. St. Andrew's State Park, Panama City, Florida 3. Kailua Beach Park, Kailua, Hawaii 4. Cumberland Island National Seashore, Cumberland Island, Georgia 5. South Beach, Miami, Florida 6. Tunnels Beach, Kauai, Hawaii 7. Pensacola Beach, Pensacola, Florida 8. 3) INTERNATIONAL COOPERATIVE ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Gone with the Wind" - The Musical opens this April in the UK! Set in 1860s Atlanta, Georgia, "Gone

with the Wind" follows the story of the 17-year-old Scarlett O'Hara, the eldest of three daughters living a life of luxury on their father's plantation. When President Lincoln demands the end of slavery in the South, the Civil War begins and Scarlett's life and that of her family are thrown into turmoil. Her none-more-tempestuous relationship with army captain Rhett Butler serves as a metaphor for the irrevocable changes being wrought upon America itself.
The Department of Economic Development has created several cooperative advertising opportunities in the UK to coincide with the grand opening of the musical. To view the unique opportunities for your organization, visit http://ftp.itt.state.ga.us/georgia/Documents/CoOpOptions.pdf.
4) BARRY BROWN RECEIVES AWARD FOR PRESERVATION EFFORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) presented the 5th annual Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation Stewardship on March 26 during the Department of Natural Resources Board meeting in Atlanta. DNR Commissioner Noel Holcomb and HPD Director Ray Luce presented the awards.
The Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation Stewardship are awarded for significant leadership or achievement in historic preservation stewardship as it relates to state-owned or administered properties or projects.

He has continued to assist in the development of plans for Resaca Battlefield, acquired by the state in 2000. Mr. Brown has testified and submitted written documentation for several sites threatened by development in various counties, especially Johnston's River Line in Cobb County. In 2003, he coordinated the acquisition of 100 acres of historic land along Lionel Hampton bike path and Utoy Creek, a property that contains remnants of Federal trenches built in August 1864. Overall, Mr. Brown has assisted individuals, educators, and local, county and state officials in the identification and protection of Civil War properties across the state of Georgia.

6) GOVERNOR PERDUE DEPARTS FOR CHINA ON DELTA INAUGURAL FLIGHT; WILL OPEN GEORGIA CENTER IN CHINA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Governor Sonny Perdue departed from Atlanta earlier this month on Delta's inaugural non-stop flight to Shanghai, China. Governor Perdue is leading a delegation of business, academic and government officials from Georgia on a week long economic development mission to Shanghai and Beijing.
"This is the first direct link to China from the Southeastern U.S., and the only nonstop link from the U.S. East Coast to Shanghai," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "This is a great honor for our state, and for Delta, our hometown airline."

The delegation will first visit Shanghai and will then travel to Beijing where Governor Perdue will open Georgia's Business Advisory Center.
The business advisory center, located in Beijing's Central Business (Chaoyang) District, will introduce the state's opportunities in commerce and tourism destinations to the world's fastestgrowing economy. The center will help Chinese companies find foreign direct investment opportunities in Georgia; assist Georgia companies find new export partners in Chinese markets; and introduce Georgia's tourism destinations to Chinese travelers.

Participating organizations include: City of Atlanta, Atlanta Preservation Center, the Georgia Trust, Historic Preservation Division, Historic Oakland Foundation, Easements Atlanta and Georgia State University.

11) MILLEDGEVILLE RELEASES AUDIO WALKING TOURS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Milledgeville Convention & Visitor's Bureau recently announced the availability of their historic walking tour on audio.
The audio tour will allow the visitor to experience the historic trolley tour completely on their own. It

will capture the listener's imagination by transporting them back in time while highlighting the historical significance of Milledgeville. Available at the CVB office, a visitor will be given an mp3 player as well as a map to guide them throughout the beautiful downtown historic district. Both a walking tour, as well as a driving tour, will be available.
This project was developed due to the growing number of visitors seeking that "edutainment" experience for their family and friends as well as the tech-savvy traveler who is more comfortable with the interactive and multi-media opportunities to experience history.
For more information on Milledgeville or the audio tours, please call 478-452-4687 or visit www.milledgevillecvb.com.
12) FLAVOR OF GEORGIA ROUNDS OUT SECOND YEAR WITH A BEEFY WINNER ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Will Harris's cowboy hat stands out in a room full of bareheaded people. His grass-fed beef stands out, too. The judges took a few juicy bites of his rib eye recipe and awarded him overall winner of the second annual Flavor of Georgia food products contest.
At an award ceremony swirling with colors, contestants and flavors at the Georgia Freight Depot in Atlanta on March 18, Harris, who hales from Bluffton, Ga., talked about what makes his beef tasty and his cows happy.
Since 1866, the Harris family has raised cattle on their farm, White Oak Pastures. They are building a processing plant on the farm, which recently received its organic certification.
The Flavor of Georgia contest showcases food products made in Georgia. This year, the contest drew 150 entries as diverse as organic sweet tea, a sweet pepper dressing, glazed peanuts and a sloppy Joe sauce alternative.
Harris took grand prize and first place in the meat category. Laura Darnall of Savannah won in the candy category with Candy Clay Dough, a multicolored moldable taste treat.
In the natural or organic category, Eleanor Rhangos of Savannah won for the Savannah Bee Company 100% Pure Artisanal Sourwood Honeycomb. In jams, jellies and sauces, Jan and Joel Coffee of Savannah claimed top honors with Dr. Pete's Praline Mustard Glaze.
Top honors in barbecue and hot sauces went to Sue Sullivan of Atlanta for Hot Squeeze, a sweet gourmet kick in the taste buds. In the wine category, Mary Ann Hardeman of Clayton repeated her last year's victory with a different vintage -- Persimmon Creek Vineyards Seyval Blanc.
In snack foods, James and Bertha Carter of Alma delivered a crunchy winner with Rockingham Fried Pecans. And in the dairy category, Ricky Sparkman and Kelvin Spurlock milked top honors with their fresh butter and milkshake-thick chocolate milk.
James Dault of Canton won the miscellaneous category with his Sweetwater Growers Infused Roasted Garlic Basil Oil.
For more information on the annual contest, go to the Flavor of Georgia Web site www.caed.uga.edu.

TIA members can submit editorial ideas and images to AOL for inclusion on one of 10 themed galleries featuring U.S. destinations and also receive a reciprocal link from AOL Travel, considered one of the top travel information sites on the Web. To find out more about National Tourism Week, visit http://www.tia.org/pressmedia/TWFA/ntw_week.html.
15) SURVEY: $10 BILLION IN FEDERAL TAX REBATES WILL BE SPENT ON TRAVEL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ten percent of Americans said they plan on using their federal tax rebate to travel, according to a survey commissioned by travel insurance vendor Access America. As part of the government's economic stimulus plan, taxpayers can expect a 2008 federal rebate of a minimum of $300 for individuals ($600 for couples) up to a maximum of $600 for individuals ($1,200 for couples), plus $300 per child. "With a stimulus package valued at about $105 billion, the survey results suggest that more than $10 billion could be directed into travel and tourism as early as this summer," said Mark Cipolletti, vice president for Access America. It was not immediately clear whether that $10 billion was money taxpayers were already planning to spend on travel or whether it was additional travel dollars the industry could expect to gain. To find out more, visit http://www.travelweekly.com/Article.aspx?id=170716.
16) HOTEL PRICING POWER TO REMAIN STRONG DESPITE DOWNTURN, ANALYSTS PREDICT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While an economic downturn will hinder the lodging industry seller's market, it will neither heavily affect the tiers of most interest to travel buyers, nor the domestic markets in which buyers have seen the sharpest rate increases, industry analysts predicted. "While there's certainly going to be a downturn, it's going to affect the lodging industry in a significantly different way than in the past," said lodging industry analyst Mark Lomanno, president of Smith Travel Research, who last week addressed the National Business Travel Association's Business Travel Financial Forum in New York. "It's going to affect the most price-sensitive parts of the market first and the secondary and tertiary markets first." To find out more, click here.
17) TRAVEL TREND: GOING SOLO? YOU MAY BE IN LUCK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The single supplement - a charge levied by most tour operators on travelers occupying a single hotel room - is an age old fact of package tours that some rail against, others scoff at and some tacitly accept. But a surge in people traveling without partners has companies making accommodations for them in a number of ways. Some try to pair solo clients with a same-sex roommate and waive the single supplement if they're unable to do so. A handful of operators have reduced or, in certain cases, suspended the single supplement, at least on some trips. And increasingly, mainstream operators are targeting the segment with singles-only itineraries. To find out more, visit http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2008-03-13-single-travelers_N.htm.

18) TRAVEL TREND: MORE CHIC THAN CHEAP? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That might be the new motto of Motel 6, which aims to redefine what it means to stay in an inexpensive roadside motel. Think flat-screen TVs, granite bathroom countertops and other amenities not commonly associated with budget chains. And don't be surprised to see low-price competitors do likewise. At least two, Super 8 and Red Roof Inns, have similar plans in the works. Gone will be the busy, vividly colored bedspread. Bedding in sophisticated tones such as cinnamon or olive will complement an accent wall. In the new bathroom, a white vessel sink will set atop black granite. Room carpets will be replaced by wood-look flooring, and new, contemporary furnishings will resemble something from the pages of a West Elm or IKEA catalog. To find out more, visit http://www.usatoday.com/travel/hotels/2008-03-20-motel-6_N.htm.
19) TRAVEL TREND: TOURISTS SEARCH FOR THE AUTHENTIC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Geotourists want to return home not just refreshed, but also enriched. Experience-driven vacations or "geo-savvy" travel is gaining popularity, according to the Travel Industry Association. Nearly 55 million Americans are labeled geotourists, travelers with a distinct preference for culturally or socially-related travel. About 30 million people have taken a trip to learn or improve a skill, sport or hobby in the past three years. Industry leaders aim to fulfill the demand because in many instances it generates tourism dollars in areas far off the beaten path. To find out more, visit http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/mar/23/tourists-search-forthe-authentic/.
