Fort McAllister State Historic Park
Fort McAllister is a vast earthwork that anchored the southern end of the defenses of Savannah. During the Civil War, it withstood seven major naval attacks from the coastal side. The fort was captured on December 13, 1864 and the city of Savannah ultimately fell as well.

Old Governor's Mansion This restored Greek Revival mansion served as the residence for eight Georgia governors from 1839-1868. In November 1864, General William T. Sherman used the mansion as his headquarters when his army occupied Milledgeville.

Wreaths Across America Every December the Andersonville National Historic Site participates in the Wreaths Across America program to remember and honor our military veterans. Sponsored wreaths are laid on each of the 13,000 graves of Federal prisoners who died in the prison camp as well as the other veteran's graves in the national cemetery.

Thomas "Blind Tom" Bethune Born blind and a slave on a farm outside Columbus, Thomas "Blind Tom" Bethune showed a unique musical genius that became evident during his childhood. He traveled the south during the war, playing venues such as Columbus' Springer Opera House. After the war Blind Tom toured Europe and South America. Notables of the age such as Mark Twain and Queen Victoria sang his praises.
