State Gets Entire 48th Armored Division
THE ADJUTANT
GENERAL'S
GOVERNOR CARL E. SANDERS
MESSAGE
MAJOR GENERAL GEOR GE J . HEARN
My Fellow Guardsmen:
We have in recent months fallen far below our authorized strength on a nationwide basis. In Georgia, too, we have slipped considerably and are fai Iing to meet our 6-month trainee quotas.
To spur enlistments, the National Guard Bureau has authorized enlistment of prior servicemen for a one-year trial period. National Guard Bureau has increased funds to support the recruiting campaigns ("Operation Big Push" and "Try One") with additional supplies of booklets, folders, posters, and radio spot announcements.
However, in the final analysis, it is YOU - the Guardsman in the ranks- who is our best salesman. We must reverse the trend and start our strength rising upward once again. YOU are the vital link in the chain of events that is necessary to put a man on our National Guard roster.
If you value your service in the Guard, ore proud of your contribution to the national defense of our great country, and reflect the just pride you should have in continuing the historic role of the Guard, YOUR associates wi II consider the benefits and advantages offered by the Guard.
Earning extra pay, making points for retirement, and training for job opportunities are not the only inducements. Going to camp with your close friends and neighbors, and together being a part of the first line reserve force in the nation, should be sufficient appeal.
We now have an all-Georgia divisi.on. Let's be proud of it and make it the best one in the nation by filling up our ranks with dedicated Guardsmen .

MARCH, APRIL 1963
Retirement ceremonies and the presentation of Commendation Medals honored two veteran Army Advisors in the office of Col. Charles Conn 29 March when Major John W. Davis and Sergeant Major George H. Agness were bid farewell by the Advisor Group. Major Davis was the advisor to the 265th Engr Bn in Statesboro, and Sergeant Major Agness was the senior non-com in the Senior Advisors office from 10 June 1952 until retirement, setting some sort of longevity record for the usua I-
Iy transient personnel of the group.
158th A TS Hauls
Most Cargo in Feb
The 158th Air Transport Squadron (H), Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William F. Summerell, transported more cargo during the month of February than any other Air National Guard Unit assigned to Eastern Transport Air Force.
The 158th is a part of the 165th Air Transport Group (H), stationed at Travis Field, in Savannah. The figures released by Military Air Transport Service indicate cargo airlifts in both the domestic United States and overseas flights to Europe and the Carribean area. When participating in overseas airlifts the unit aircraft depart from designated cargo ports of debarkation and lose their identity as Air Guard aircraft - becoming entirely under the control of the Military Air Transport Service.
The Eastern Transport Air Force area of responsibility for air transport duties covers the entire eastern portion of the United States and areas of Europe and the Carribean. In performing this outstanding feat of airlifts the 158th Air Transport Squadron hauled more cargo than another entire Air National Guard Wing for the same period.
Eastern Transport Air Force officials have expressed ~heir appreciation for the outstanding job done by the 158th.

ENTIRE 48TH ARMORED DIVISION
* * ** COMES TO GEORGIA
WITH REORGANIZATION 16 APRIL 63
Georgia's 9,000-man Army Nat ional Guard was officially reorga nized April 16, when the entire 48th Armored Division was assigned to the State.
Major General George J. Hearn, Georgia Adjutant General, said it was the first time in the history of the State that a complete division of the Guard has been allocated to Georgia. Since the activation of the 4 8th Division in 1947 it has been a split Georgia-Florida division.
Obtaining the division for Geor gia has been a triumph for General Hearn since he first began working to ward this goal in 195 4. "Many Staff conferences have been held with the Guard's senior commanders in the past several months," General Hearn said, "and I am happy to
announce that not a single Georgia community will lose a National Guard unit, and no officers will be lost in the reshuffling of personnel. "
Major General Benjamin F. Mer ritt of Macon remains as division commander and Brigadier General Charles L. Davis of Savannah and Brigadier General Jack G. Johnson of Thomson will serve as assistant division commanders.
While the division has bee n assigned to the State, it concurrent ly has been reorganized under the ROAD concept (Reorganization
Objectives, Army Division) which places increased emphasis on flexi bility, battle field mobility and firepower.
The following is the line up of new units, commanders and locations:

Major General Robert J.
Travis (Retired), perhaps the strongest and most vocal advocate of the National Guard as a reserve component of the armed forces, died at his Savannah home 23 March after a two-year illness. He was 86.
The illustrious general, who continued to participate in National Guard affairs long after his retirement, was President of the National Guard Association of the United States in the 1920's.
His brilliant career in the service started in 1902, and he remained in either active or National Guard service until his retirement at Fort Jackson, S. C. in 1941, when 17,000 troops marched in his honot.
General Travis received his commission as a brigadier general in the Guard in 1924. It was during this year, that he introduced a resolution at a convention of the National Guard Association calling for the Guard to become a part of the Army on a reserve component basis. Within two years, the a~sociation's support led Congress to enact the appropriate legislation.
For his defense of the Guard against its foes, Travis Field was named in his honor.
In recent years General Travis continued his interest in affairs of the National Guard by attending the Guard association conventions. He was present at the dedication of die Army Guard armory on In termediate Road in Savannah, 29 April 1962.
General Travis was a civic leader, philanthropist and former city attorney.
His contributions to the National Guard and to the civic and cultural life of Savannah have been recorded for all posterity.

Commanders' Call Gets Nationwide Plaudits
They're still talking about the superb conference held in Savannah recently for Air National Guard Commanders arowtd the Nation, In fact, they're wondering if any other State can top Georgia's hospitality after the Savannah Chamber of Commerce and Colonel Bill Kelly's air technician detachment at Travis pulled out all stops to make the 500 highranking visitors welcome.
We could fill up a page or two with copy describing the various activities that made the Cornman der's Call such a success, but we thought you'd get a better idea of the program from the accompanying photos.
AC&W UNITS TO SCAN SKIES IN SWIFT STRIKE Ill
Field training dates for the 117th AC&W Flight and the 129th AC&W Squadron have been announced, as the aircraft control radar squadrons prepare to take part in exercise "Swift Strike III." The joint maneu ver of the Strike Command will take place in the Carolinas and Georgia under General Paul D. Adams,
Having_played key roles in the previous Swift Strike exercises, the AC&W units are now counted upon to control the vast groups of aircraft participating in the mock battle.
The 117th, under the command of Lt. Col. Creighton L. Rhodes, will be headquartered at North Field, S.C., 20 July 3 Aug. Lt. Col. George Patsios' 129th will be located at Ft. Gordon, Ga., 3 17 Aug. The combat exercise will involve 75,000 men of the Army, Air Force, AF Res and Air National Guard.
Sp6 Wm. Bevil Retires
Specialist 6 William A. Bevil, veteran Georgia Guardsman from Griffin, retired 15 Feb after more than 30 years service. Sp Bevil served with Hq Co, 30th Division, from August, 1926, to Sep,1940, when he entered active service. After his return, he served successively in Hq Co, 48th Div; Hq Co, 3rd Med Tk Bn; and 117th Surgical Hospital from 29 Jan 48 thru 16 Feb 63.

Miller to March Mil e for Every
1-Yr Enlistment
The Savannah Air Guard's "Try One" recruiting campaign for veteran airmen took on new " vigor"'in April whe n Major Charles E . Miller, Jr., 165th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron commander, put himself "way out on the proverbial limb" to bring them in,
In a moment of complete dedication and determination to fill up the ran ks with prior-service men, he anno unced that he would walk a mil e fo r each new enlistee brought in under the new program. "Try One " allows a veteran of any branch to enlist for one year in the ANG.
Believing that he is in for a lot of walking because of what the ANG program has to offer prospective airmen, Major Miller is limbering up hi s rather compact frame for a march that may exceed the renowned 50-mile hike made famous recently .by the Kennedy dan.
If swelling ranks are going to re sult in swelling feet, we don't want to wis h the major any discomfort, but we imagine his group commander will be waiting at the end of the line with a cold bucket of water and perhaps a cold bucket of brew to ease his aching ankles .

Mrs. "K" Retires, Leaves Legacy
Of 17 Years Service to USP&FO
April 30 "Retirement Day" came for Mrs. Carolina J. Katzenstein, affectionately known as Mrs. " K" to her fellow employees in the USPFO and many other technicians of the Army and Air National Guard in the State of Georgia.
Mrs. "K's" name appeared on the original list for employment with the USPFO (previously USP&DO) submitted to the National Guard Bureau upon reorganization of the Army National Guard after World War II. Her official employment date was 1 October 1946. She was solely responsible for establishing the initial set of fiscal records cover-
ing the expenditure of federal funds for support of the Army and Air National Guard. After approximately eight (8) years of service in the Fiscal Division of the USPFO Mrs. "K" moved to the Supply Division where she continued her good work until the time of her retirement.
A presentation of luggage and other gifts was made by General Hearn, General Camp, Colonel Thompson and all of her fellow em ployees on the National Guard Reservation in Atlanta,
After contemplating her retire ment, the good-natured Mrs. " K " composed the following verse:
Going to put away my girdle and my high-heeled shoes, Throw out the old alarm clock and those Monday morning blues; Let someone else scan pricing guides and try to stay awake While 1 sew or shop or chatter, on my long, long coffee break.
Now from my long experience 1 owe you some advice , So look alive, and listen well, for 1' ll not tell you twice! You must keep your listings current, do your filing day by day, But while breath is in your body, don't throw an ything away!
We'll not disrupt our party by having people cry; Mascara makes such big black tears, and powder should be dry. And, while 1 know ham isn't kosher, yet this 1' ll s.ay, or die: We've had good years together, good people- you and 1.
1st Pvt.: Why did you salute that truck driver?
2d Pvt. : Don't be so dumb. That's no truck driver. That's General Hauling. Didn't you see the sign?
Linda: Daddy, what did Noah tell his sons about fishing off the back of the Ark?
Daddy: I don't know! Linda: He said, "Boys go easy on the bait. I only brought two worms."
