GEORGIA'S NEW AND EXPANDING MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES
FISCAL YEAR 1968
DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRY AND TRADE Loui s W. Truman
Lt. General, U.S. A. (Ret.) Executive Director August, 1968

INTRODUCTION
This report presents information about the announcements of New and Expanded Manufacturing Industries in Georgia during the period July 1, 1967 to June 30, 1968. The economic growth shown by this report is a clear indicator of what can be accomplished when many persons and agencies, both public and private, work together cooperatively in an effort to build and strengthen the economy of the State. This growth is indicative of the favorable climate for business that presently exists in the State, and is a vivid demonstration of confidence in the future of the State by industries which have expanded and by industries which have built new plants in Georgia.
Included in this report are (1) All new and expanding industries announced during Fiscal Year 1968 which came to the attention of the Economic Reports and Surveys Section of the Research Division, Georgia Department of Industry and Trade, and (2) New and Expanding Industries with facilities under construction during Fiscal Year 1968 which were not previously reported by the Economic Reports and Surveys Section.
The major sourc es of information us ed in preparing this report were as follows:
1. Department files on industries which utilized the services of the Department of Industry and Trade in either expanding an existing plant or finding a location for a new plant.
2. Newspaper clippings from all Georgia newspapers.
3. Articles and reports of various periodicals which contain information about industries.
4. Information supplied by Industrial Development Agencies, Chambers of Commerce, Public Utility Companies, Railroads, Banks, and Other s.
Information from all sources was carefully checked and cross checked, and industry classifications were verified. Much of the information was pro .. vided by the companies involved. Where official information from the companies was not available, an estimate of investment and employment was made if sufficient information was available to support an estimate. In some instances, information available was not sufficient to support an estimate, and investment or employment figures, or both, for a particular plant are not included in the report.

-2-
The report represents the best information available to the Research Div,ision at this date. Changes in the data reported will occur frequently as additional information is obtained and verified. Subsequent information will undoubtedly reveal that the figures reported for some plants are too high, nec es sitating an adjustment downward, while figures for other plants will be found to be too low, necessitating an adjustment upward, Experience indicates, however, that after all subsequent changes are made, the net change will be very small in either direction.
STATISTICAL SUMMARY
During Fiscal Year 1968, a total of 501 New and Expanding Manufacturing Industries were announced in Georgia. Of this total, 196 were New and 305 were Expanding. Capital investment for 181 New and 283 Expanding plants totaled $625,805,448. Capital investment for .!2-New and 22 Expanding plants is not available. Reports show that 15,098 new jobs were created by 125 New Industries and 119 Expanding Industries. Employment figures on 71 New Industries and 186 Expanding Industries are not available.
More New Manufacturing Plants were announced by the Textile Mill Products Industry Group than by any other with the Food Products Group in second place. The same two industry groups were also first and second in the number of Expansions announced. The Textile Mill Products Industry Group accounted for the greatest number of new jobs in New and Expanding Firms. The Rubber and Plastic Products Industry Group was second. First place in capital investment for New and Expanding Firms was taken by the Textile Mill Products Industry Group with the Food Products Industry Group a distant Second.
Thus, Textiles, long Georgia1s most important industry, demonstrated a strong resurgence during the period and outstripped all other industry groups in growth.
