In November 2003, the number of inmates held in county jails decreased by 166 inmates to 33,660. Meanwhile, there was no change in the capacity of county jails (34,905 beds). The number of inmates awaiting trial increased by 196 inmates to 20,189 and the number of sentenced inmates awaiting transfer to State Institutions decreased by 189 inmates to 4,645.
The complete jail report is available on the web at: http://www.dca.state.ga.us/research/publicsafety.html

1 In cooperation with the Georgia Crime Information Center, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs compiles and publishes this report for the Georgia Sheriffs' Association and the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia. 2 This figure does not include jails presently at 100% or that would exceed 100% if not for the boarding out of inmates. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Thursday of the month. Inmates that are sent elsewhere for housing are counted by the facility housing those inmates.
