SUBJECT: County Jail Report - September 2001
Enclosed is the County Jail Inmate Information Report for September 2001. This report reflects the inmate population on Thursday, September 6, 2001.
In September, 148 of the 148 functional county jails provided inmate information. This represents 100 percent of the county jails reporting and 100 percent of the State's population. Please note that this represents no change from last month in the percentage of the counties reporting nor in the percentage of the State's population represented.
The number of inmates held in county jails decreased by 53 inmates to 29,886. Although this is a decrease from last month, it represents the second largest number of inmates ever held in county jails. The capacity of county jails had a net increase of 48 beds to 31,703 as a result of a new jail opening in Appling County.

*This figure does not include jails at 100% or that would exceed 100% if not for the boarding out of inmates. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Tuesday of the month. Inmates that are sent elsewhere for housing are counted by the facility housing those inmates.
