Enclosed is the County Jail Inmate Information Report for October 2001. This report reflects the inmate population on Thursday, October 4, 2001.
In October, 148 of the 148 functional county jails provided inmate information. This represents 100 percent of the county jails reporting and 100 percent of the State's population. Please note that this represents no change from last month in the percentage of the counties reporting nor in the percentage of the State's population represented.
In October, the number of inmates held in county jails increased by 161 inmates to 30,047. This is the largest number of inmates ever held in county jails. The capacity of county jails had a net increase of 512 beds to 32,215 as a result of a new jail opening in Carroll County and additional beds being added in Walton County. A profile of county jail capacity is included with this report. Some of the interesting results of this profile are: 13 counties have a bed capacity of 500 or more beds, 47 counties have a bed capacity of less than 50 beds and 14 counties housed 58% of the county inmates.

*This figure does not include jails at 100% or that would exceed 100% if not for the boarding out of inmates. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Tuesday of the month. Inmates that are sent elsewhere for housing are counted by the facility housing those inmates.
