Georgia Crop Weather
Week Ending Date June 5, 2005
BENEFICIAL RAINS Wide spread rains fell over most of the State, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. In most areas, heavy rains improved hayfields, pastures, and row crops conditions. Up to five inches or more of rain fell in some areas. Soil moisture levels were rated 5 short, 58 percent adequate, and 37 percent surplus.
Planting of row crops and harvesting of small grains continued as weather permitted. Wheat harvest made progress but continued to lag significantly behind normal for this time of year. Wet conditions increased disease pressure on commercial vegetables, especially in watermelons. Frequent rains limited applications of fungicides and herbicides. In south central Georgia, some tobacco fields were flooded on the low land areas. TSWV remained a problem in tobacco fields.
County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Other activities included assessing sprouting damage in wheat and the routine care of livestock and poultry.

District Highlights These comments are written by the Georgia County Extension Agents, and have been compiled and edited by the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service.
DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Rain showers have stopped hay harvest, soybean planting, and other field activities. But, the rain helped pastures and planted crops.
DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Very rainy and overcast all week. Rain showers all week have prevented field work.
DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available.
DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Rains have been spotty over the area. Lots of late cotton and peanuts not yet planted. Fields are wet. Cracking sprays are running behind. Rain amounts from 3.5 to 5 inches. Grain harvest delayed. Other crops look good.
It rained (very heavily) most of the week.
DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Rain, rain, and more rain! Four+ inches in most parts of the county. Rain has helped improve corn, grain sorghum, pasture, and hay field conditions but has halted wheat harvest.
We have gotten an enormous amount of rainfall recently. We have begun to see
a few viral problems emerging in our tomato crop.
Condition of wheat after seven days of rain and overcast conditions is currently questionable. This week we will be able to assess sprouting damage.
We received about 2-2.5 inches of needed rain to offset the dry conditions from the last month. No hay was harvested, as we experienced some rainfall every day.
DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Water, water everywhere!
Planting and wheat harvest delayed by nearly 4" rain event over 4 day period. Cotton and peanuts up to very good stands but cotton growth, in particular, has been slow due to cool temperatures.
Too wet to do anything this week.
We have had some heavy rains in areas. We need sunshine now.
DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We received 2.04" of rainfall. Crops overall in excellent to good condition. Herbicide applications required in some corn fields. Early green bean harvesting.
Much needed rain! Crops look good, although grain harvest delayed.
DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Got 5" in the county on Friday. Lots of flooding. Some tobacco is flooded on low areas. Most of cotton and peanuts has been planted. Applying herbicides and plowing. TSWV in tobacco is ranging from 5-15%. A few field are being hammered at 60-80% damage from TSWV.
Wet weather hampering small grain harvest. Watermelons being sprayed with fungicides, wet weather increasing disease pressure on watermelons.
Rains this past week have helped greatly.
DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Received 8 inches rain in the county. Much needed rain fell across the county from 5-8 inches. Some tobacco flopped as a result.
